I never understood why these two ever ended up in the same sentence to begin with. Believe me, I enjoy MJs early work but never felt these two were ever in the same category musically.

Because they both had huge hits at around the same time -- and they're black. That's it. No other reason. At all.

Someone on Facebook posted a meme of MJ and Prince that said:

Michael Jackson owned a huge share of the Sony catalog and he is found dead

A few years after getting ownership of his master recordings,Prince is found dead

eek conspiracy theories can be crazy!

It's because Michael and Prince were the two biggest black stars.Let's be real.Comparisons were inevitable.

I don't know. I've read and seen much more Jimi Hendrix/Prince comparisons in my time.

Fans of pop music always compare them for obvious reasons. Dancing, singing, entertaining, R&B music, etc. But musicians know the difference. And on earth, there are many kings, but only one Prince. Nobody could touch him. MJ did not even come close.

My best friend of nearly 30 years sparked a lively discussion with me when he punctuated his condolences with, "but he was no Michael Jackson." And by lively discussion, I mean I left no evidence and no one will ever find the body. Justifiable homicide. He could have stopped after, "Prince was a'ight."

I loved MJ. And I loved Prince. I think the media likes to mention both though in the same story, just to get more attention. They used to especially focus on some sort of made-up feud. As if MJ and Prince really hated each other and wanted to fight each other. I will be glad next month when the media has run out of Prince stories.

I think they respected each other's talent and left it at that. They admired each other from afar. I've always loved them both, but just kinda went more to the purple side cool

Yeah, that's about right. Have you seen Will I Am talk about when they sort of met each other in Vegas. Kind of a funny story.

Same age, both pretty, eyeliner, hip, black, worshipped and grabbed from the same people that influencced and pre-dated them, eclectic, dynamic performers, diversive styles of music outside the norm for young black males in the 80's. Ruled the 80s. Black. Awesome.

cool

Prince did way more with his gifts though. No question.

It's as if Prince can't exist without Michael.

This is not a diss to MJ...I cried when he passed to. I still miss him...

but now it's Prince's turn to be mourned and honored.

my two cents.

I hate the "2016 sucks" posts. "we're losing a lot of great musicians this year!". Prince is not one of many to me. Like no. I didn't even listen to those other people. Can this just be about Prince right now?!! Like I almost wish no rockstar died the year he died so he can have it all to himself. It's like stop stealing his thunder.

People will think of me as immature and selfish, but I agree with you. The day P died I went on instagram and there were pictures of him with MJ and people were saying "First the King, now the Prince" I couldn't stop laughing at the delusion. Prince is the King here IMO.

Anyways, I always thought of MJ as a pop star and Prince as a rockstar.

MJ = entertainer

Prince = Musician

I think because they were the same age, black and had a rivalry (maybe created due largely by the media) and died under mysterious circumstances involving personal staff that may be involved in a cover-up, prescription meds and doctors. It won't be until the all results come in if in its indeed a fact. Also comparing the 2, which is comparing apples to oranges makes the media alot of MONEY!

Tell that to Farrah Fawcett.

Acting and being a musician aren't the same though.

I don't feel as if Alan Rickman dying recently takes away from any musician who died this year.

I totally noticed when Farrah died. Was not a huge fan of mj. Just when my parents trained me to be as a little kid with the hits. Independently I got into Prince music. I liked Farrah even though we aren't at all in the same gen. I watched Charlies angels reruns as a kid and some of her supporting actress work in the 90s.

I listen to like 3 other bands. They are listed in my profile. Prince was basically his own genre. There's just too much material. My other favorite bands combined don't have a quarter of the material. So I basically only hear them a quarter of the time.

I recall what I used to listened to as a kiddo, little Richard, mj, Richie valetns, selena but I don't own their music (belong to my parents) if you turn on "i don't know what you got but it's got me" i will still know all the words.

I guess I don't like enough musicians for them all to die on the same year. Plus it looks like they're mostly all dead. sad I'm only 30 too so it sucks the "youngest" bands I like have members 15 years older than me. I guess I hate modern music? sad there's a lot of talent out there too...beautiful voices...terrible tracks.

Prince and Michael were the two greatest black artists in pop music history. Broke down barriers and changed music and with both gone, there's a void, at least to me, as I loved them both

Trying to compare and talk about who was better or more talented does a disservice to both artists. Can't both be great without having to bash one to praise the other?
