Sign 'O' The Times HD Remastered Edition "The Sign" Box

What are the chances that a nice treatement of this film is released domestically now that Prince is gone? (as sold in Japan). I like to think that Purple Rain will get something like this.

It's long long overdue.
Would be nice to have Parade birthday show and a Livesexy DVD as well.

More concert DVDs please.

Just to show the world how good he was.
Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...
Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of ham.

Even the Japanese version is not up to standards. The audio is a faux surround mix taken from what sounds like a mono source.

I wish Steven Wilson could give us the Prince box sets his work deserves.

True. For concerts, there is Rave and Aladdin on DVD; the Syracuse PR show was only VHS and laserdisc I think. With SOTT still out there, someone is going to think that is too many concert videos.

Just looks like a slipcase to me. A nice one, but the content is still possibly substandard.

I have this on a DVD that came free with a Sunday newspaper years ago. That'll probably do the trick for now, as I never read any great reviews for proper versions.

That isn't true about the audio. The audio for SOTT official blu-ray and DVD is excellent. You can easily hear moments of clear panning effects (it's not overtly clear throughout) like when the drumers walk out in SOTT (left). Or when Prince is off to the side soloing in the breakdown of "I Could Bever Take the Place -". For that solo every time he does a bluesy line, it drifts off to the rear and sides and then comes back. Atlanta Bliss solo in "Now's the Time" is panned a bit right. So is Miko's solo. At the start of "Little Red Corvette" guitars are off to the right. The swirly funky scratching SFX on housequake come out from the rear speakers..

The original theatrical mix was a Dolby Surround (3 Channel) for the theaters at the time ,which is what it is on the laserdisc and VHS editions. (I have all of them). There was never a mono mix. The overall mix is disciplined to create the sound of a live concert not a pure soundboard, so there is intentional filling of the sounds to all speakers which might make it less precise in terms of specific instruments coming out different speakers or in different positions.

It is accurate ot what was in theaters back in 1987.

Thanks for the informative post. For those of us who haven't been paying attention, is the Japan version playable on US Blu-Ray players or do you need a converter?

I've ordered the Japanese one, it comes soon, but Japan discs are supposedly the same region code as US discs.

I have the Australian Blu-ray which is identical in terms of the actual disc to the Japanese one. It plays on my computer and on my sony blu-ray player. I did have to okay it playing that region on some kind of menu prompt on the software player. But not on the actual blu-ray player (that I can remember).

I don't think the Japanese version is worth the expense. You are essentially paying an extra $80 for a few pieces of paper and a cardboard box. I was in Japan and holding it in my hands but wasn't even really tempted because there's no extra content on the disc shrug I have the Australian blu-Ray and I'm happy with that

All the official albums need new masters. However, if your wanting to hear the best version of Sign O The Times, hunt down the Remaster that Dr. Fink did a few years ago...

Sorry for such a dumb question, but are you talking about the real Dr. Fink or an alias? I am assuming the latter...

I have this SOTT box, and it plays in my US blu-ray player. I paid $75 for it a few years ago. It's basically the only blu-ray version of the movie, so i splurged. My only other versions were the VHS I bought in 1988 (that got wore out!), and the grey-market Brazil one (which is kinda dark to me).

As for the box, it's pretty nice, it comes with an extra case, in case you wanna put it on the shelf with your other movies. It came with pictures and a booklet that has stuff in Japanese, including bootleg reviews. I thought that was hilarious.

That Brazil one doesn't count, it's black market to me! Unprofessional product, all homemade.

Yes, very unprofessional. They used a picture from 1982 on the cover of a movie from 1987! Why why why??? The picture quality is crappy, but for me it was better than my ole ass vhs.

yeah, i know what you mean. When you have been collecting 25+ years, you basically have your on little personal vault of Prince stuff. I go through it all the time, but it seems never ending...
