people are just so critical. my best friend said after he saw the musicology show "he's nothing but an oldies act". well, you know what? he is nothing but old and jaded and dissapointed with life and he got to spread it around.

Who could have predicted that he would barely chart after showing that he would not play by record companies rules?

Someone with a bit of intellect and foresight, maybe.

Why is that creepy? It's not a ghost. It's not a haunted house. It's not someone who's been dead for 20 minutes, then comes back to life. It's not a chair that moves on its own in an empty room. It's not those twins in The Shining. Maybe you should look up the word "creepy".

.

Sad. Why? Because charts matter SO much to you? Have charts ever been an indication of talent or genius? Not really.

.

By the way:

Letitgo #10 US R&B

I Hate U #3 US R&B

Betcha By Golly Wow #9 (Canada)

Te Amo Corazon #7 (Canada)

Black Sweat #2 (Canada)

.

Now, you can discount Canada, but that doesn't really matter. Songs were a hit w/ the neighbors upstairs, which meant other folks appreciated a song more than folks in 'murrica.

.

Today's post has been brought to you by the word: Homework.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Who cares about hits on charts? The best of Prince's music never made it on any "chart". Getting music on a chart is often a result of heavy promotional efforts and allowing a lot of people to mess with your music to make it more palatable for a wide audience. Prince didn't care about promotion or chaning his music to appeal to pop sensibilities just production. His fans who appreciate his music understand why chart success is unimportant.

I think maybe this person's point is that he was no never more to get the air time and the attention and the money that he'd gotten up to that point. He fell under the radar, in a sense. And this person finds that, in retrospect, sort of "creepy" (maybe that's not the best word choice, but who cares?) because he had literally been dominating the popular culture for a decade. I have to say, I find it a little surreal myself. Thinking about the string of choices he made, with hindsight. It's maybe not creepy, but it's very interesting, how he flipped the script, and made things go his own way. And it the process sort of alienated himself, exiled himself to his own little musical island. He also had multiple creative renaissances and was free to do whatever the hell he wanted. So it was an exciting era for Prince and for his true fans, if not the most culturally significant period of his career. Wait -- scratch that! It was a cultural shitstorm. #SLAVE

I don't know what that matters to me, or people in the future who I'm gonna tell how awesome Prince was. TMBGITW wasn't really one of my favorites, and since then, many more have been so, yea. Not really creepy, to me, at least.

Now some of the music on the charts now? That's creepy! smile

And that 1994 ballad wasn't that good. He wrote better stuff after that but the media and the world at large outside of his shrinking cult audience lost interest and moved on to other sounds, movements, genres, ideologies, and artists. Happens to everyone at some point. The world moves on and then you die.

Why do "hits" matter? Jimi Hendrix was a 1-Hit-Wonder, but who cares?

The only reason Prince didn't have more hits is his battles with the industry. They control everything, and they decide who will have hits and who won't. It's not about the merits of the music. We all know this right? wink

Don't hate your neighbors. Hate the media that tells you to hate your neighbors.

I feel Prince could've been more mainstream if he wanted. This is the guy that did a complete 180 from the sound that made him a mega star, from 1999/PR to Around the World in a Day, a popish/Beatle-esk sound. People thought he was crazy for not capitalizing and making a PR2 album.

I feel Prince went where his heart told him with his music instead of being driven by fame, money, awards, etc.

Not surprising. He seemingly went out of his way not to be played on radio.

Yeah, that was incorrect, as noted.
