Is it safe to say Diamonds & Pearls was a fun album?

Besides the songs Cream, Gett Off and Diamonds & Pearls, the album does offer some juicy gems - like Insatiable and Willing & Able.

I like this album, it's one of my favourites of his 90s input, and one of my favourite P albums altogether. it was the first album to introduce me to Prince, and then to Purple Rain.

I do not understand how there could be any danger attached to such a mundane statement. What would jeopardize safety?

One of my top favorite Prince albums for sure. The only song I can't get with is "Jug Head"...all the other tracks are masterpieces, especially "Live 4 Love".....it's my favorite song on the whole album. nod

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

without Tony M., it's a whole different story, and 100x better. Gotta get rid of "Jughead", too.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Even if I really like the album (maybe not all the tracks, but surely many of them), to me D&P is the turning point of P musical journey, the moment in which "Trends try to follow P" became "P try to follow trends".

In that prospective I can agree that D&P is somewhat a fun album.

My least favorite Prince album. The songs are either brilliant or terrible; I just can't find the middle ground on the album.

One of my least favourites. A few good songs, but too much shitty rap and most of the album sounds like a poor attempt to please his black audience.

A solid album, but not a favourite of mine. Strollin', however, was a nice surprise.

Nothing is safe to say around here... You just gotta say it. ;)

I love this album. I even like Jughead and Push. It sounds like an album he had fun with. It will forever remind me of junior high and delivering papers Sunday mornings in the dead of winter - Live for Love was the home stretch and I always started moving faster when it came on. It made me feel strong.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

I have to agree with this sentiment. I remember getting so excited for the advance single--Gett Off. It sounded so raw and nasty. And then the record came out--it sounded so polished and slick. It really did sound like Prince was making a play to get his music onto contemporary radio. So the pop songs--as good as they were--sounded more like conventional pop music that you heard from other artists. (Nothing on LoveSexy sounds like conventional anything!)

There are really good songs on this record. (D&P, Cream, etc. and ESPECIALLY Money Don't Matter)

But it didn't feel like a WHOLE album in the way that his previous records had. It felt like a collection of songs--intended for different markets. (R&B, Adult Contemporary, HipHop (?), etc.)

Batman and Graffitti Bridge both had great great moments--but for me--this is when the quality and focus started to drop off a bit. I don't think any work as whole would touch what he did on LoveSexy. (or the 80's albums that preceded it)

He never never lost a step (for me) as a live performer--but I think he started venturing into that VH1/Adult Contemporary world and (again for me) lost so much of the rawness and angst that fueled his greatest music.

Dare I say--as he seemed to become more human, happy, comfortable in his skin--the music started to lose something?

Strollin is a great track, as is Money Don't Matter 2nite and of course D&P itself. Cream is also and Gett Off, although I think that would have worked better on prince in general it's a strong album and is an amalgamation of number of genres. Also Walk Dont Walk is an underrated track IMO, seems reminiscent of Graffit Bridge Era so maybe it was originally intended for GB.

I think this album has the most positive lyrics of any Prince album, I think he was in a good place making these songs

I recently read an article quoting Prince saying that staring around that time ~1990 he was writing from a better place instead of a place of anger that fueled a lot of his 80s work.
.
That quote helped me appreciate D&P more. Because at the time I was not ready for ultra-smoothed out pop Prince, but seeing it in the light of positivity and his personal emotional growth helps.

Interesting. I remember listening to "Push" when studying for exams in university, got me through some hard ones. Walk Don't Walk is another great message. Strollin' sounds so happy.

I actually really like D&P come to think of it...wink

I tend to prefer loverman Prince to proselytizing Prince, so I liked the music in "Thunder," but the lyrics make it one of my least favourite openers. I've heard all the comparisons between "Cream" and "Bang a Gong" but I still love the former as much as the latter (Electric Warrior is a great album, btw). "Gett Off" is my favourite on the album. Neither the major ballad (D&M) nor the minor ballad ("Money...") do much for me, but the former is a nice production. I like most of the other tunes well enough, but none ever really stood out to me or stuck in my head. I always thought LoveSymbol was way better, but I'll have to listen to D&M again and "get stoopid."

Well it has to be out of print now and it definitely can be counted among the Prince classics. It does have a no 1 single on it and at least 3 songs that you can hear in a department store or restaurant on any given day. Fortunately, I bought a CD with the plain cover and one with the holographic. I just found another one in a Goodwill for $1 in mint condition. I guess I am enjoying hunting down albums that I have owned for years just because they have suddenly increased in value.

It's a fun album filled with catchy songs. My favorites are "Strollin","Cream","Insatiable","Live 4 Love" and "Gett Off".I have to admit, though, some of the songs didn't age well (title track,"Thunder","Daddy Pop") but overall, this is a satisfying album.

23 positions in a one night stand? That's dangerous, man. Most nights I only have two positions: (1) sleeping and (2) getting up to pee about five times.

...and that's exactly what D&P was... an intentional effort to regain chart status (and probably improve his value going into contract renegotiations...).

Me neither. Has some gems but the title track makes me cringe whenever I hear it: "D to the I to the A to the M, O to the N to the D to the pearls of love." lol
