I was 9 years old in 2007 when I saw Prince in a celebrity magazine. I thought to myself "Whoa, who is this guy? He's sexy eek ". I was 9 years old, I had no idea what sexy looked like yet when I saw him I immediately knew. These weren't my exact thoughts but at that time it was like "Screw Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, whoever male celebrity is considered hot, they ain't got nothing on Prince" lol

I had no Internet back then so I never knew anything else about Prince besides what was told in that magazine.

Fast forward to 2010, MJ had died the previous year before and I'll admit it, I became a bigger fan of him after he died, I always liked his music as a kid cause my dad would play it all the time but I didn't start listening to music for myself until 2008-2009. By that time in 2010, my obsession with MJ was starting to fade and I was getting tired of hearing the same songs all the time, so I started listening to other 80's music because I didn't know what else to get into. I had cable during that time and the package we had included Sirius XM Satelite radio so I got into the habit of listening to the 80's channel for hours on end just trying to discover new music. So one bright, beautiful morning in I would say January-March of 2010, I went to sit down in front of my TV to eat breakfast and I wanted to listen to music so I changed it to the 80's channel. I managed to catch the last 30 seconds of Raspberry Beret by that sexy dude I saw in the celeb magazine years ago, Prince lol

I thought to myself "Omg, I finally heard music from him!" boogie

After that I made it my mission to hear the full song and try to see what else there was to this Prince guy. I managed to go online with the limited Internet access I had and illegally downloaded Raspberry Beret. (I'm poor, don't judge me!) Needless to say, I became obsessed with the song and I wanted to discover more but with my shitty cable cord internet for one user at a time, I couldn't.

Fast forward to June of 2010, I was watching TV one day and I changed the channel to VH1, they were airing Purple Rain. There was only half an hour left and I was scared my parents or brothers would come in and judge me (they would judge anything I'd watch or listen to) so I got scared and decided to DVR the rest of the movie and I turned off the TV. The next day I decided it would be safe for me to watch PR so I played it, but after 20 seconds, my mom barges in. She asks me what I'm watching, I say "I don't know". She sits down next to me and then she starts making fun of Prince's singing during Purple Rain. I'm getting really nervous because I have never seen this movie before and I'm not sure if something weird would happen (like a sex scene or something) so I stop it and I get out of the DVR section and go to regular cable. That's when my mom realizes that what I was watching was recorded, so she starts interrogating me and then proceeds to make fun of me for being a fan of "a gay, washed up singer". I got pretty embarrassed and pissed at the same time. I didn't really say anything because well, I was 12 years old and I was never good at defending myself, plus I barely knew anything about Prince. (In fact, because of that experience with my mom, I thought Prince was gay and I believed that until I started going online and discovered how much of a womanizer he is. Shocking but also relieved to say the least lol) After my mom left, I saw the rest of the movie and I really liked it, especially with the energy of I Would Die 4 U and Baby I'm A Star.

I forgot how everyhting happened, but within a few months I became an official Prince fan and I only became more and more obsessed with him and his music as the days passed. I ended up taking a break from Prince in late 2012-early 2013 and did not come back to renew my place in the Purple Army until March of this year. Boy, do I regret a lot now sad

I had similar experiences where one or two people tried to judge, verbally put down or criticize whatever I was into or doing. But all the decsions i made in my life were right for me. Best wishes with your musical journey - its your journey and nobody elses...no person has the right to judge anyone else imho...

1982/3 not sure exactly, but I saw the 1999 video on tv and was hooked. I remember I walked to school, saved my lunch money and went and bought the album on vinyl from Woolworths on the weekend. It was my very first album. I played it to death until I found out there were earlier Prince albums.
I ended up walking a lot to school that year.
Grits and gravy, cheese eggs and jam...
Butterscotch clouds, a tangerine and a side order of ham.

If he were still alive I would've have the balls asked him the most pointless questions like "what kind of makeup brand do you like?" "do you watch cartoons?" or shit like that because
I know he probably won't reply
but if he ever did, He probably give me a one-answer reply i'll never understand what he meant lmao, Hell I would've tweeted him my DRAWINGS, but i was just so fucking scared to do so.
I know he probably likes watercolor or abstract-esque art but mine is pretty cartoonish; not sure he'll liked that but what the hey.

If anyone's wondering about my drawings, I only posted one on my tumblr art blog. here it is.

I made it around January this year and i liked his 3121 look so much i got bored one day and drew it. I wasn't done at the time but i just leave as that.

I know how you feel about the drawings. I study illustration and sent him a few of my drawings, but like yours they are very linear and cartoon-esque. I get that art is subjective and if it wasn't his cup of tea, it wasn't his cup of tea. Love your pic though!

Great stories !
As a kid 4me it started in 1982 - I first heard little red corvette on an '80s old school 'but new then' ghetto blaster i had while cleaning our garage. Liked it - it was just 'better' than anything else i had heard - and then 1999. Liked Purple Rain album and ATWIAD a lot and had both on tape but I was'nt hardcore into Prince's music at that stage - i didnt even know what hardcore fan/m was, meant or entailed. I liked Depeche Mode, the Police, etc next i was really into breakdancin and early Electro, there was a bunch of us into it - my best mate was a national U16 100 meter champ and was an awesome breaker - he imported an instruction book from New York or DC and taught some of us - we practised breakin - it was great fun, windmills, crazylegs, headspins, 1990s (that was a move), there were breakin battles at local youth discos ....we were getting imports of early 80s hip-hop from the US and Electro stuff from the UK (anyone remember those?)..
Then..........
in '86 I heard the Parade album for the first time -I already liked really Prince but that record changed everything 4 me to another level - it was on vinyl in my best friends house on his sony '3 in 1' system - around the same time myself and 2 friends also discovered Tom Waits and some other bands we liked - but Prince was untouchable. I also remember when they played sister for me on a cassette player - i really couldnt believe my ears !

But even Parade hadnt prepared me for the stunning mindblowing event of Sign of the times on the BIG cinema screen - I went to the Cinema on Oconnell st in Dublin to see it with 2 other friends - we were secondary school kids - that moment was transformational - nobody had ever seen anything like it - i went again the next day on my own I was so transfixed by the music and the power of the sound blasting from the speakers - the opening chords to SOT full blast in a large movie theatre with a pristine sound system was nothing short of incredible at the time and it still is !
i remember people were up dancing in the dark movie theatre - i had never seen people dancing in a cinema before - i remember i wanted to get up and dance too but i was too self-conscious at the time to dance in a cinema. Fast forward to now - 2 weeks ago the movie was played as a kind of memorial event in Dublin and I danced wearing my prince love symbol chain the whole way through along with about 200 hundred other people - its hard to believe so much time has passed.

That was it for me - from Parade and SOT onwards i was full on hardcore into the music - so were 3 of my mates - but not quite to the same level as I seemed to be. In university first year i had the sign of the times writing exactly like on the movie painted on my 14 hole dock martin boots !
The black album, countless other recordings, controversy fanzines, live concerts, aftershows, crrystal ball via post when i lived in OZ, love4oneanother website, npgmc website downloads, all followed over the years.

Another memory...I worked in London for a summer job in 1988 or 89 and had a Prince t shirt - same as the one below - and an absolutely beautiful girl about the same age as me actually stopped me on the street as i was walking by - she said i like your tshirt - I digress but at that young age stage in my life a stunning looking girl stopping me on the street cos of my Prince tshirt was just about the coolest thing that had evr happened to me...
Afterwards in Uni I also was into many other bands and musicians like The The, MBV, the Fall,
Miles Davis, Marvin Gaye, and much more, but Prince was always #1. Myself and 5 friends started running alternative music discos back then which was gr8 fun - we would have meetings to sort out the track list beforehand - i always played Prince kiss 12 " or RB 12", uptown, or erotic city 12" and always the place would go nuts - i remember one guy even picked up a chair and started waving it in the air for the entire Prince song..

Most of all i remember the excitement beforehand of going to a prince concert - it was unlike any other feeling - it was something really special -i remember:
- myself and my best mate scoping out the hotel Prince and his crew were staying at before cork 1990 to hopefully see the band
- the 100 meter dash to get up to the front circle enclosure at rds dublin 1992 when loads of people were running up the pitch after the gates opened - my best friend lost his sandal in the dash but still he kept running !
- edinburgh 93 incredible live show the 20,000 adult (not teenage) crowd were in the palm of his hand singing and dancing like ecstatic kids
- the 1995 shows in dublin awesome vocal performance the second nite (sound wasnt as good the first nite) and the excitement being at the POD
- the 2002 spirit aftershow was i think the best musical experience of my life and when he played a love bizarre right there a few yards away it felt like i was actually in a Prince movie or inside the music ...something like that - that nite at that small spirit niteclub my best mate who was also into the man (funky design was his fav) was sat at the side of the stage close to the doors that go backstage. And before the set Prince mistakenly came out the doors at the side of the stage and then turned on his heel and went back when he realised his mistake that he was out on the dancefloor area - my mate was just sat a few feet in front of him at a table having a pint of beer with his legs crossed like he was reading the paper or something and then staring in utter astonishment as Prince stepped out the doors in front of him and then back in again lol !

The 07 London shows were awesome.. i was booking flights to go to the Manchester academy gig in '14 but had commitments... I never stopped listening and keeping an eye out for new tracks that I liked and i Love some of the albums in recent years but I stepped back from Prince's music and music in general at times over the years as I was spending way 'too much' time listening to music - not saying that is/was a good or bad thing - just the way it was 4 me - especially from 2008 -2013 as i was soo busy in my life and developed more of a life of my own seperate to listening to music...
- There are other aspects to my life now that R important 2 me - so im not sure how long i will stay around the org - as long as its feels right i guess - ive been on here a lot over the past 3 weeks or so but sooner or later i know i have to drag myself away (if I can) - i think i will always keep checking back here occasionally and hope prince.org lives on and on - Princes music has been a big part of my life and millions of lives - i feel listening to someone so talented can be very inspirational yet sometimes 4me addictive. Im conscious of the spiritual aspect that he seems to have developed more as the years went by and is reflected in his music. We are all spiritual beings imho. Whatever happened physically maybe he found his 'way back' to his spiritual home.

ThankU and God Bless Prince

(As irresistiblebitch666 said, I AM TOO REALLY LATE IN THE GAME LOL)

Ok I'm trying to make this quick but I never really got into his music until the last week of May of 2014 when my mom picked me up from college and decided to turn on some local old school
radio and '1999' came up, I really liked it and asked "who sings this?" and mom replied "THAT'S PRINCE!!, YOU NEVER HEARD OF THIS SONG BEFORE?" well no I wasn't aware that was him. ok cut back years before...
yes I have heard of him but only for the song Erotic City at age 7 (or 8 idk, i'm 22 now), for some reason my mom/or dad would play this song alot since around the time they love to create cd's mixes to play in the car. so yeah that was that.

When my grandpa passed away in 2008, We were looking through his stuff to keep as part of his will, He has own the Purple Rain CD and decided to keep it along with his whole CD collection. I didn't bother listening to the whole album until I started getting into P later.
I could've sworn that I MIGHT OF vaguely remember seeing the music video of TGRTEBS on TRL, but i was young and remembered the late 90s quite well (born in '94).

I've spent 2 years doing countless research of prince's career, torrent his 80s/90s albums + bootlegs (sorry P lol), stalking the org, and most of all collecting rare pics of him because
he is just so damn pretty, so pretty i want to lit my face on fire of how much he slays in every pic he's ever in.

and on the morning of April 21st and I was ABOUT to head my ass to bed because I have never slept (just like P who is nocturnal, i don't sleep either lol idk why but there's ALWAYS
something to do late at night) but I'm kinda glad i didn't. I got online as usual lurked on the org and saw the first ever post about the paramedics at paisley and just sit here
watching everything unfold and started to shake a little. TMZ confirms he's dead.
I didn't know what to believe; I went to check on the news, they were still talking about other reports, waited until they say something and then *BOOM*
"Breaking News we're now getting report that Music Icon Prince..has died at age 57, we'll get back into the story for more updates.."
and that was it for me went back online and started shaking like crazy. Now for me
if i ever went to bed and got up around
4PM PST and saw #RIPPRINCE trending I would've screamed "WTF!!!!! OMGGGGG HE'S DEAD??? HOLY SHIT FUCKING NO DDDD:".
Apprentley i went up to my mom who lovess prince and told her that "omg mom they're saying that prince died D:" she was sorta asleep; got up kinda
a lil annoyed and said in a tired voice "omg no way.." and i just left. it was not until 5-10 minutes later she just turn on the tv and
was also watching the news in her room while facebooking. My mom was sooo sad
I could tell in her voice she somewhat did cry. we ended up picking up something to eat just to make both of us 'feel better' but it kinda didn't work. we just bounded
and watch prince music video marathon on MTV talking about him and all throughout the whole sad day.

I wanted to cry but somehow i can't until 3 days later when i was reading articles about P doing
human shit and the one that really got me into tears is when it was revealed that he did a concert for deaf/blind college kids. I mean MAN. I know he did a concert for the 1991 Special Olympics and Autism Rocks not too long ago but I REALLY WANT
TO KNOW THE STORY BEHIND THOSE TWO. I have autism myself and it would break my heart even more he did it because he has a HUGE heart for them, I could just see it.

Man I kinda do regret not posting anything just after he passed it's just ugh I hate being shy but all of a sudden i'm comfortable replying to posts now. what the fuck.

MrHJ

1981 heard Controversy and got the album - then in 82' Lady Cab Driver and Automatic on 1999 cemented my fate as a lifer. Fast forward to 86 and I was lucky enough to see my first Prince gig, the Parade tour - when that curtain dropped on "I think I wanna dance," I nearly passed out - I met some wonderful people waiting in line and these people became friends for life. I think that's why so many fans identify with others particularly on forums and especially at gigs - I was so happy to see that same spirit on the UK shows in 2014 when many of the fans were young but also there were us 50 year olds acting like kids again. The following year from 86 we organised a coach trip to Bercy to see Sign of the Times tour. Strange that on the many excursions down the years I met the same guys - I was proud that I had seen over 40 gigs but then would meet some random Dutch, German or Swiss fans who'd been to see him over a hundred times. I guess Prince got into your soul and whereas I listen to lots of different stuff - Thanks for introducing Andreas Vollenweider pre those French shows btw- nothing comes close to the wild anticipation of new Prince material. I became like a 5 year old at christmas when something was announced. My wife had to put up with me saying "listen to this, the bass on that is..." well you all know what I mean.

Alas, that will seldom happen now and in a strange, mad way I suddenly feel my own age. Prince had the effect of making you feel young again - The only consolation for me, is that I just have to close my eyes and I can think of those many, many unforgettable experiences. My favourite was being in Minneapolis in the early 90's and litterally bumping into him - he said three words to me which sumed him up, "Nice hat brother!" leaving me opened mouthed in the corner of Glam Slam - I stuck out like a sore thumb (tourist), an hour later I was invited to a small room with two other people and we sat while he walked in, smiled then played two unrealeased tracks to us on a small stereo- I walked about ten feet taller for a month after that.

That is why I will always be a Prince fan.

Bootleg Paisley gig 1994 CD y'all, - My brother got us Royal Mail front row seats in 95. I never saw a man literally convey himself to the mic and lay down such angry immobile prince shaped guitar. Locked eyes with Mayte for a half second.

"Play that m*ther f*cking bass"

I wish I could play back my memories.

His bracelet fell off and a dude with a torch picked it up again.

The spotlight on the Gretsch at the I Love U In Me guitar solo.

"The Band In The High Castle", like some alternative future where prince had won and was all the music there was.

Angry, angry man. I thought that was how it was always supposed to be.

That would explain the Lisa Minelli standard eyeliner at least.

The end.

i wish i'd never kissed your lips, bearded lady

headtripparade

I was born in 1986 so I grew up with the staples on pop radio (Little Red Corvette being my absolute favorite as a kid) and the videos on rotation on VH1 (my inner fashionista was completely jealous of his When Doves Cry hat), but when I got a little older (5 or 6) and started to be more vocal about wanting to hear his music (my mom says I would just say "Corvette" over and over) my parents refused to indulge me. Being from the south, I was raised Pentecostal so it's no surprise most of his music was deemed perverse.

The older I got, the more curiosity set in and I rebelled against my parents any time they told me a specific artist or song was off limits. My friends and I fought like hell to get his (and Madonna's) albums. We succeeded in getting a Purple Rain cassette from my friend's older sister in 1996 and thought we were the coolest shit in the world.

I always loved him but he did take the back seat from time to time as I explored other bands. I was honestly out of the loop for a hot minute until I saw him on New Girl and fell in love all over again. I wasn't in love with the tune they used, but seeing him poke fun at himself really got me on board again and reminded how much I loved that side of him. I was dying to go to a show but sadly, April happened and I never got the opportunity.

My biggest regret is never seeing him live.
