There's a great story to the recording of the song. Dummer Michael B. noted how the song was recorded, as most were in that time, as a band song. There's a small section near the end, during the "Na nah nah na-na-nahhhs", where the music almost pauses, then he jumps back with something "GON' HEAD!" or something like that. It was at that point Michael B. said as he was drumming so hard, his headphones fell off. He reached around, quickly put them on, and came back in just before the next down beat. Prince liked the pause, and kept it in the song. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I was soooooo enamored with the song when it came out and remember being pissed off it stalled at #44 on the Billboard Hot 100. Still love it.

Could it be said that it's the last video where he was really trying with Warners? It was kind of the last shot for a big commercial hit for the album and it didn't work. It would have been great to hear it live.

But don't like The Continental either.... but love the spoken part rhyme of the second half ... How U Wanna B Done... with Carmen on the telephone voice. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

- I have a very clear memory of this song being created. It was very early on in our tenure. The horns had been called in, but he had just started working out the track with the band in the studio when we arrived.(which was a rare situation for us, since normally rhythm tracks would already be done when we were brought in) I was sitting on the couch in the control room with some of the other horns, just listening to him dictate the song to the band and rehearse it instrumentally (while I frantically tried to scribble down a few horn ideas and figure out the turnaround so we'd have a few things ready) After they played it a few times, he started singing. It was such sweet melody over those simple opening chord changes. Brian G. and I just looked at each other and acknowledged what a special moment it was. As horn players, we usually didn't get to see the whole process, but this one we got to watch the rhythm section put it together and then go in and record the horns. Everytime I hear this song I'm thrown back to that early session and remember being that wide-eyed kid sitting in studio A, watching one of the greatest musicians in history at work, having no idea what I had just been thrown into and where it would take me. What a crazy ride.

The single choices/schedule was just off for this album, which is sad given how many great potential hits were on it. However, "7" was a hit going to #7 Hot 100 and #3 R&B. The Morning Papers was the second biggest R&B single from the album, reaching #8, but failed to crack the top 40. :-/

I love this song. The solo, just the whole cosmic everyday-ness of it (if such a thing can exist). It was The Love Symbol album that was in my car the most before Prince passed and it has kept its place since then.

I've always loved the song, it has a really special quality about it. I think it's my most listened to song from the album. . I love the video as well. The music videos from Diamonds & Pearls and the Love Symbol album are my all-time favorites.

I always thought Damn U should have been the big hit from the album. But by the time it was out it was too late. Same for The Morning Papers, I guess.

"if he poured his heart into a glass and offered it like wine, she could drink and be back in time for the morning papers"
.
Are you kidding me? in terms of Prince songs, it is seemingly middling, overlooked and underrated. That above, is just a fantastic lyric. It's a strong song. Top 25%.

Always loved this song and video. The entire cd is fantastic. "What is sacrifice"?

I remember he tried to incorporate a "grunge" look for the video and single artwork, but adding flannel with white pants and high heels doesn't lend itself to a lot of street cred.
Great song though, classic Prince.

It's a great song. The solo was mentioned already but what stands out to me is the awesome guitar work going on down in the mix at the end of the song.

I remember something I read in Uptown back then (looked it up): "with a catchier chorus instead of the recurrent la la la's, the song could have become a Prince classic." I agree with that. It's a nice song, but not one of his best. Still, a great story from Mr. Moops again, thanks man!
