Whilst the Symbol album has its fans, it also gets dumped on a lot. And the fact it didnt sell like D&P means the public didnt really take to it either. But to me it is his last great masterpeice. Flawless, alongside Lovesexy, Parade and Dirty Mind.

C&D is my favourite prince album.

AOA was very well received on the org, but the public didnt bother. To me this was his last great artistic statement.

HNR Phase 1. Much poo pooed and by no means a deep, meaningful album, but I guess I am going against the flow on this one.

Goldnigga - Never thought I would say this, but ive been listening to it recently after years of ensuring it never went near any of my music players, physical or digital, for fear of it stopping the earth spinning on its axis. Alas, there is something very funky about it.

NEWS - I could never get into it, and neither could many fans. But with a little quiet time and some good headphones, there is a little gem waiting to be heard. East is awsome!

Roadhouse Garden - Not many have even heard this one, but it is probably the most underrated album of his entire discography. How can anyone not like the fact that The Revolution were at their most funkiest in the 90's?

(ok, just kidding about that last one smile )

I really don't like Face down, moroseself pitying lyrics and that horrible squawking woman with "Dead like Elvis", load of crap.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

MPLSOUND anyone??

To be honest, at first I overlooked this album simply because I found Lotusflow3r more appealing. But it's slowly grown on me through time. Dance 4 Me, Valentina, Ol' Skool Company and Chocolate Box are classic P; silly and outrageously funky.

And let's not forget the ballads, sweet and simple. U're Gonna C Me, Here.

Better With Time is a beautiful song.

Listen to '(There'll Never B) Like Me' and tell me that isn't funky?

"Ask ur mother ur sister ur brotha
There'll never b another
Never b another like me" Prince wink

Style is not biting style when U can't find the funk chatterbox

Yeah, where'd that come from? It's one of his classic songs. Might even be the last great song he ever did.

I would not go that far.

"Here" and "Valentina" are great songs...i dont understand why people are so hard on this LP..

"Here" is criminally underrated

The mid-90s triumverate of Come-Gold-C&D is the one I've been revisiting most since his death (together with the outtakes of the period).

That NPG band was magnificent. The production is gorgeous (the best-sounding records in his catalogue, at least until we get the remasters). He is angry and passionate. He effortlessly mixes funk and rock and they are some of his most cohesive works.

I truly see this as a second golden age of Prince music, a kind of second wind at the end of his WB stint.

To the extent that not many people outside of the Prince diehards know much about this era, I think the whole period is underrated.

No doubt about it, a Top 3 Prince album.

.

Please, put it on today and listen straight through (it's a short album).

- What a wonderful bass line and what an amazing vocal in "Space."

- Put on "Loose!" and hear ripping guitar on a techno song?

- One of the best grooves in Prince history..."Pheremone"...I dare you to stand still when that comes on.

- And all musicians know that what you don't play is just as important as notes you do play...well just listen to those spaces on "Dark." Prince at this time (Gold Experience) was cluttering up every song with everything including the ktchen sink; but on "Dark" he does the opposite -- he gives that song so much space, so much room to breathe. The silent spots in that song are so fantastic.

.

Just play the darn album and see it is a masterpiece.

Hell yes!!! nod Agree 100%

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Indeed!

I feel this is the most real Prince album. I believe Papa was based on his real life. He was depressed at this time, angry and that came out in the music.

I like the album except for these reasons.

1. Come goes on for 7 minutes too long.

2. Solo is a ridiculous self indulgent experiment

3. The song Orgasm and the sexy interludes are funny first time, but then just tacky and corny, yes we knew he was a hit with the ladies back then, but this is ego caressing like a pimp making music. Plus wasn't he supposed to be dating Mayte at the time.

4. Papa is dark, but very slight.

.

HOWEVER,

The rest is incredible, Space, Pheromone and Loose are an amazing menage a funk, I love letitgo and Dark is one of his best ballads ever. Overall I have always felt the album was above average and good but not great because of the flaws. If it was a 6 song EP with Space, Loose!, Pheromone, Dark, Letitgo and Race it would be challenging the Gold Experience. Still its right in there behind Symbol, Gold and D and P for the 90s.

.

I agree with you all Pheromone is incredible and an epic song up there with the classics off Parade, 1999, SOTT and Lovesexy. Space is a really good ambient jam too, but Pheromone is an exceptional song and can only challenge Shh!, Endorphinmachine, Damn U, Cream and Sexy MF in the 1990s.
