Cause And Effect - Cryptic Lyrics

I was listening to Cause And Effect just now, and in retrospect the lyrics seem to be a message. Almost like a goodbye message.

His lyrics did become a lot more cryptic in later years.

I'm honestly beginning to believe that around 2010, he knew he wouldn't live for much longer.

I mean, the lyrics to Cause And Effect now read like a message from Prince in the afterlife...

I am here. where are you?
Ladies and gentlemen...

Cause and effect
Hey, hey, hey

Iif had the chance to do it all again
I wouldn't change a thing, except my next of kin
There's something on the tip of my tongue
-got a taste for sin
If you stamp your passport full of regret
You have nothing to remember but a lot to forget
Leave no enemies, leave no debt

Made in the image of gods intellect
To no other man am I the subject
I am what I am because in effect
Cause & effect
Hey, hey, hey

If I could talk to myself back then right now
I'd say 'son you might wanna, stick around
Something amazing is about to go down'
If I could leave myself just 1 little note
One that husbands and fathers wrote
It say 'you need to be a superstar or grow up,
But not both'

Made in the image of gods intellect
To no other man am I the subject
I am what I am because in effect
Cause & effect
Hey, hey, he

Cause and effect
Ladies and gentlemen
Rock/roll rock/roll

I am here. where are you?
Ooooh oooh. haha. hey eh heh oh hoh

Don't let them say your paper's worth more than gold
I see a generation lay down before they get old
And getting endlessly sold
You need compassion for one another
Righter than wrong
That's what needs to be at the heart of every past
And future soul song

Contracts only make you smaller (reversed)

Made in the image of gods intellect
To no other man am I the subject
I am what I am because in effect
Cause & effect
Hey, hey, he

Uh ha, look at y'all. brains splattered
All over... moneyapolis

Ladies and gentlemen
Rock/roll rock/roll

Maybe I'm just reading too much into the words, but they're so... Odd.

I did always find the "I would change nothing but my next of kin" line quite fascinating. I think it answers the question I would have asked Prince, " If I had told you when you were 14 what you would go on to achieve, what would you say". Do you read this line as a comment about family or possibly wives?

I've not paid too much attention to them before (although I have a 20Ten playlist with this as the opening track, and "Hot Summer" thrown in just before "Laydown").

prince

It's tiring hearing people say "he knew he was going to die". Hell, we all know we're going to die. That was six years ago. No one predicts that stuff, especially that early on, unless you have a death wish and/or a suicide pact. Prince spoke about death, and the end of the world since way back.

prince

THe song isn't all about death. That's some serious overthinking, in my opinion. But when you're 52, you tend to look back a bit. You have more life behind you than in front of you (although at 52, it's just about the same amount, depending). You have experiences to build on, and reform yourself from.

prince

Prince truly did want to be the best version of himself that he could, whatever that meant for him. It's no great insight. We should all be doing that daily. Be grateful, be smart, think twice. Think ahead (cause and effect, karma, etc). We've heard endless stories so far, and everyone has said how gracious and kind Prince was with folks that worked for him. That ideology is in the lyrics, to me. He spoke of his father often, too, and that's in there, too.

prince

Not everything is about death, and he didn't "know he was going to die", no more than any of the rest of us.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I'm unsure. He's either possibly regretting not having any children, or he's actually dissing Miss Tyka.

Just the phrase, "next of kin" conjures up thoughts of someone's will.

The whole song seems to be about death.

"I am here" as in, I'm not with you.

"Do it all again" as in, it's done.

"Stamp your passport" as in, journeying to elsewhere.

The word "leave" appears three times.

"Don't let them say your paper's worth more than gold." Like a will.

It's lyrically oblique.

Well, first of all. People are trying to cope.

Secondly, many things are still uncertain, people make up things quite quickly.

And last but not least. Artists are very prone to suffer from depression, or at least artists are free spirits who see the world as a place that is full of misery and hurt. With their art, they aim to make the world a better place than it is. Many painters, musicians, writers and poets have commited suicide, or were mentally ill. I'm not saying Prince was depressed or in anyway nuts, per se.

But when you consider Prince's songs, there are some hints pointing towards a troubled mind. 1999, running from destruction. Moonbeam Levels, looking for a better place to die. Face down, bury me face down. And more hints can easily and objectively be found in some of his lyrics. Wasted kisses, could be about the love he wasted on his child that died. He may have felt that his love making was fruitless, in a depressed poetic kinda way.

Never forget that lyrics come from experience, upbringing, religion and ofcourse straight from the artist's soul. You can't take them literally and there is no sure way of knowing what he exactly meant by some lyrics, but there is always some truth in them.

You have to forgive him, he was probably dreaming when he wrote that.

The next of kin could be his regret over creating that punk Prince Dracula. eek

Jk- you know, lyrics are written to be extensions of the poets soul.'the energy it creates flows Out and connects to you, the reader, the consumer, the receiver of the message.

I've heard the same song from the same artist at different times in my life and the meaning can change depending on what I'm dealing with- what I am subconsciously or consciously asking for guidance on. Pay attention sometime to what you're thinking when a song comes on that hits you hard in the feels. It doesn't happen all the time, we aren't always tuned into the higher frequency of "God" but you totally know it when it happens.even with your iTunes shuffle. When I'm really tuned, sometimes it's like every song that comes on has a message for me. It's been so intense at times I've had to stop listening cuz it freaked me out.

The problem today is we feel so disconnected when in reality we are all very connected but if you ain't LISTENING to the other end - of course you won't feel it.

I don't think I've heard this track and I've googled it and can't find it anywhere but it sounds like it's awesome and I'm sad I missed it.

If you think this song is a goodbye, believe that. However, remember that Prince whether he wanted to admit to it or not, DID think about his own mortality, quite often it would seem. He was aware that the music lives on and I'm sure he knew the power of the language of music. He was HYPER aware of the way music worked. It's what made him such a freakin' genius!

He will talk to us forever as long as we believe. So believe, Purple True Funk Soilders. Spread The Word, And everybody listen... Come on... Listen... What's that sound?

Oooooorrrgasmmmmm! Lol

Peace y'all. And be wild.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

My dear friends, the human mind is programmed to make sense of the world even when there's none to be found.

That's why we see canals on Mars.

That's why we see cherubs blowing trumpets in the clouds.

And that's why that pumkin looks so much like Neil Carter.

Please note: Prince had plans as recently as the week before he passed away. Whatever health issues he had, he did not envision buying Old Man Johnson's farm this year, most likely not even this decade.

I still have no idea what these lyrics are all about.

I mean, he's had a few songs which are all about himself. This one just feels so strange.

Ah, right.

I know that the lyric plays off the near-same lyric in Rebirth Of The Flesh. I mean it is the same, except it's an "I am here" instead of "we are here"...

I dunno. I just find it all perplexing.

I don't know.

You'd have thought he'd have taken a chance to have another baby with Mani.

It really could be referring to his siblings. It's so ambiguous.
