I'd go for the symbol guitar... Has a bit more of an iconic look, but that's just my personal preference...
It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!

Yep. The Hohner Telecaster.
Not sure if he always used the same one, but it was starting to look battered.

Or the Cloud Guitar... If he still had the original? He gave one to Spike Lee! (Or was that the symbol one.... Probably!)

To Prince fans that Hohner guitar sings out "Prince," but for the average person it is these guitars that represent Prince:

The white Cloud guitar and either the gold or purple Symbol guitar. Those are iconic Prince. Isn't the yellow Cloud already in the Smithsonian? The Purple Rain trenchcoat would be another great choice, possilby alongside the white Cloud.

The Hohner Telecaster could just about be in any band if you didn't know any better. Bruce Springsteen has one very similar, although a Fender and lighter wood. My point is, the average person wouldn't know the difference.

The man was an instrumentalist not to mention his look was always changing and noteworthy as well. I guess the Hohner Telecaster or the Cloud Guitar, or why not all his notable guitars. However, I really do think he wanted to be known for his piano playing in this latter stage of his life.

There are already several Prince items enshrined in the Smithsonian. Stephen Colbert showed the display on his Comedy Central show a few years ago.

lol, Stephen Colbert is the best!

The Purple Special would have been nice if Prince had a bit longer here with us to actually use it ...

.

.

But since that never happened I would pcik the purple symbol guitar Prince used at the Super Bowl because it's purple / Prince's color. So sad to hear he was also gonna make a bass guitar for Prince ...

The Purple Symbol guitar for its recognizability: he played it at the Superbowl to what was probably his biggest audience tuning in. The Hohner, on the other hand, should be stashed away in the same room where they put the Ark of the Covenant at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark because that thing had too much power running through it for a mere mortal to touch with their greasy fingers.

A guitar exhbiit would be great, but not in the Smithsonian. If anything, put them all behind bulletproof glass if/when Paisley Park becomes a museum.

I really do think the Purple Rain jacket/guitar is the most recognizable "snapshot" of Prince's career -- you have to think about the masses for the Smithsonian.

Haha you're so right. We shouldn't even be able to look at it!

He should also get an exhibit at the EMP Museum in Seattle.
