I always thought it was "baby aren't I are, I'm a star." But yours makes much more sense.

None of that makes sense. Who says, "I are"?

Makes even more sense because it's what is on the lyric sheet. It is a very un-grammatical phrase, but hey - for the sake of the song, who cares. I remember Paul McCartney telling a story about "The Girl Is Mine", and how he kind of argued with MJ about the line "the doggone girl is mine". He said it was cheap. MJ argued that it's not about the lyric every time; that sometimes it's about the flow, and the overall feel of a verse or a stanza. Those sorts of "short comings" in lyrics can be excused for the sake of a larger gem. I think MJ was right. But I always remember that story when I see something like "Baby, but I r, I'm a star". It's really just a way to get back to the down beat.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I don't know if those handwritten lyric sheets of his are legit, but on the one for this song, it's "Baby, but I are, I'm a star". it even sounds exactly like that in the actual song. And hey, Timbaland did it with "The Way I Are", so... Lol

When I was a kid, I always heard "Sh-boogie bop" in Cream, but thought "There's no way...this is Prince, he wouldn't put that it a song!" Sure enough, though, he did. biggrin

In my heart, I know you're somewhere laughing in the purple rain...

I have most of prince music uploaded to amazon online storage and slowly they are matching lyrics along with the song. I love singing along to international lover a few words that I didn't quite get all those years ago. back in the day Instead of singing along with with album lyrics I just used to dream away with the vinyl on the decks. I think we all make up the occasional word to fit the song if we can't make it out cool

Until embarrassingly recently, I thought the lyric in Sometimes It Snows In April was, "Those kind of costs don't pass U every day."

I mean, of course it's "cars", but my ears told me otherwise for a long long time.

For thirty years, until just two minutes ago, I never had a clue what Prince was singing during the opening verse of Mountains. The first line I was fine with, but the rest of that verse was always completely lost on me. I remember feeling really frustrated back in the day that there was no lyric sheet included in Parade. Back then I made it my mission to learn every word to every song, you know, like you do in your teens when you're a little obsessed lol

A Prince fan obseesed about his music? News to me. We're the most laid back, unobsessive bunch there is.

How beautiful do the words have 2 be
Before they conquer every heart?
How will U know if I'm even in the right key
If U make me stop before I start?

I think this is a good idea for this thread... a good way to give us all a good chuckle. It doesn't have to be recently that you found out the right lyric, just a lyric that you amusingly got wrong for a long time.

This is so bad... to be fair I blame it on the fact that I was listening to Prince at a young enough age that I couldn't have possibly known better, and by the time I was old enough, it was too late, the false lyric was already seared into my brain. So in "I Wanna Be Your Lover", I, until just a week or two ago, always sang "I wanna be the only one you cook for"

also: "show me a boy who stays in school, and I'll show you a boy I'll wear?!?!?!?" hoozawhazza??? i knew it wasn't really that, but "aware" took a little while to come to me.

I never really got his references to South America.

"Bolivian paper doll"...

Dunno about the latter but keys is slang for kilos of cocaine.

Wait, is it not "I wanna be the only one you cook for?" Aww, I'm kinda disappointed, I always thought that was quite a cute lyric, although I guess it would also be a tad chauvinistic lol

In the song Somebody's Somebody

I always thought Prince sang "There's a hot guy deep inside of him, me how the fire burns"

"I was here in the beginning and I'll be here forever more"
