Prince's influence on your spirituality

Have Prince's spiritual beliefs influenced your beliefs since you became a fan. Since his passing, do his lyrics related to spiritual matters have more meaningful resonance with you now or possibly make you reevaluate your own beliefs?

Prince was and still is my spiritual guide, everyone asked me when he turn JW if i was going to become one as well. I said no i would not be able to do that (i know a few of them and I have done bible study) but my love for Prince would be against there religion (Idol worship)?

I was in a catholic school (uniforms an all that) when I discovered Prince not just as an artist but more as a state of mind.

At that point I stopped going to church & confession but was constantly looking for the deeper meaning of things.

So in a way when I became an atheist I discovered Prince as my spirituality … Therefore he is the closest I ever came to a religion.

while i did not agree with him all the time (esp the jw stuff), he is one of the many who have inspired me to keep reading and learning and evolving in spirituality. and as i have a hindu bent, i was happy to see him incorporate eastern mysticism and third eye into his seemingly rigid christian beliefs. i think he showed that no religion, no spirituality has to be exclusive of the others (although i do think he was a bit off the deep end when he first went jw, but seems to have mellowed a bit).

I admired him more for his sexuality than his spirituality-- "Sexuality is all u ever need."

I already had a spiritual life but Prince's example in this area is one I like and admire in many aspects.
I don't know about the religious stuff but his kindness, humility and ability to not let fear stop him, among other traits, are respected by me and they help me.

I never had much interest for church except for the basement free dinners. I remember times that i would even sleep in church because the sermon was just so dull. I know who the lord is and I do pray to god but the baptist church never fully embraced me or really accepted me because i never completely played into the doctrine of it. I guess it was cause of that or cause i never got baptized but personally i dont give a flying fuck. Prince never had an influence on my spirituality but moreso my sexuality.
I am not going to become a jehovah's witness because one of my favorite musician's ever has become one. I dont understand the JW religion and it looks like a motherfucking cult and that is just not my thing but to each his or her own. I am all for individualism and freedom of speech and freedom of religion. Prince to me was always wild and sexy and crazy and he didnt give a flying fuck what critics thought of his stuff and thats why I originally became a fan. Something about being a rebel is just fucking sexy!

Prince's album Lovesexy alone helped me find God again. As far the JW religion, I respect his decision but there's no way I ever had, have, or will have any interest in it. But, like Kevin Smith said, the JW religion helped him find some form of peace during a difficult time in his life, so who am I to judge.

Same here! His brand of spiritually was so much more about love and finding joy than guilty Catholicism. I'd say Prince / music is my religion.

He also inspired me to keep searching and reading up on theology. It's sort of a hobby I guess. I did enjoy his website that had the library and I looked up all those passages he cited and interpreted them for myself. I was also totally loving his new found mysticism- I was really looking forward to where he would go with that as I feel it was more in l e with who he was. I agree his JW stuff was hard to swallow but I'm glad, as KS said, it probably kept him alive during his darkest days... Albeit, in my opinion, misguided at best.

I wish I could have told him we were all his children, those of us raised on his
Music especially. There was a greater reason things didn't work out for Ahmir. I feel like the JWS made him believe it was his fault for his bad boy ways. Or maybe he just thought that himself.

Anyway- I feel he is with us and his music will continue to light our paths.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Given he actively tried to increase the JW message via door to door sales and via song and performance, you absolutely have every right to judge. It's the most basic right you have, and the only thing that separates your society from the most destructive in history.

Aside from his wishes to turn his back on health benefits due to hugely suspect readings of hugely suspect texts with no idenfiable author, he also asked fans to support his belief in 'theocratic order'. Many just screamed approval, but I'm not sure how many realised just how abhorrent this request actually was. He wanted the Western nations to turn their back on democracy and become dictatorships. Women would be second class citizens, gays would be forced to live in the shadows, free speech would be outlawed. It all heads in the worst direction life possibly could.

Spiritually, Prince was serving himself and no one else IMHO. I have to ignore it to enjoy the music.

As a musician he was peerless, but as the leader he claimed to be in Purple Rain, he was, music aside, comically inept. It was the price he and we paid for his genius.

This 'leader' concept continued in the sequel Graffiti Bridge. 'Making love and music are the only things worth fighting for', he said. There are 7 billion people on the planet. How many of them does Prince's worldview actually apply to?

Just one.

i had a realization the other night, listening to SOTT & singing along - his music was my personal gospel music - it gave me JOY and HOPE when i needed it the most. i am an atheist, but if God is Love, i can certainly believe in Love.

LOVE, HONESTY, PEACE, & HARMONY

ps - that delayed harmony in the "nahhh nah-nah nah-nah, nahhhh..." part of Positivity - if that ain't a gospel sound, i don't know what is.

Prince's music taught me that you can live and enjoy in the material world but still be deeply and spiritually connected to it simultaenously. He took away those boundaries and paved a freeway.

none. I don't believe the way he did. I believe in and worship Jesus Christ as my Saviour. No idols. No selling your soul or whatever he did. Don't know. I get a sense of something not so good sometimes when I listen to him. If he is still alive somewhere somehow....(far fetched I know) I hope what died is Prince the rockstar and what lived is Prince the human being who finally found the way to God thru Jesus Christ. Like I read the story of Denise whatever her last name was walking away from the Vanity thing, I hope Prince has done the same one way or another. What profit is it when a man gains the whole world and loses his soul, and that's a verse I turned to the day he died, (which is actually the only three weeks I've listened to him is since he died.) well, anyways, you asked.....

Not at all.

Prince was an entertainer. He often enertained me. That's it. His spirituality was all over the map until it seems to have setlled as JW doctrines. I know them well and I don't share those beliefs.

When I stay up all night working alone on a creative project, it becomes a sort of mantra and ebb and flow of energy from my brain, often resulting in me feeling fulfilled and even surprised in a pleasant way at the outcome and myself. That's my spirtuality. Creative = creators = creation. That is the concrete "God" I know and feel.

Prince's literal self marketed spirituality doesn't live or resonate within me (the overt religious elements, I simply took as details and shades of his persona and themes).

But, I have been creative and obsessively working on little projects since I was in grade school in the 70's, and his sort of extreme monk warrior practice of wielding and honing his creative energy is certainly one of the biggest influences in my life that will continue on in me as a diamond standard.

None at all... he was just another human being, no more or less important than anyone else when it comes to faith or religion or much of anything else, actually... he was a genius of music only. The fact that his beliefs were rather abhorrent at times certainly didn't help, either.

No effect on me. I love his spiritual music, but he seemed to have this conflict within himself that sex was a sin. As I come from a family for whom membership of a strict religious sect caused a lot of family problems I've avoided organised religion most of my adult life. So I was never going to follow Prince down that road. But I respect that he had his own beliefs that helped him with his life.

I love Prince and I love his music and I acknowledge its spirituality. And I'm glad his spirituality helped him.

But he had no influence on mine. I'm a fan of the man and his work. But I couldn't stomach his a lot of his Jehovah's Witness stuff. I still can't listen to a lot of his 2000s work because of the overt Jehovah's Witnesses influence, like his heartbreaking homophobia.

I'm an athiest although I was raised Presbyterian and was actually devout enough in my youth to actually give a couple of sermons on Sundays at 13 years old. However, I was also reading and studying the bible at the time, and in short order began to see the hypocrisy and contradictions in not only my religion but others as well. Now at 45 years old, I have a pretty negative opinion of organized religions as a whole (I'll keep those opinions to myself in respect for the believers here). At about the time of my leaving religion I discovered Prince. His music was pretty much the only thing that could revive those feelings of connection to something larger than us all. He sang with such conviction and passion, it was actually hard not to believe. The Cross, Elephants & Flowers, and the all the songs like them always made me inch a bit more to the spiritual side. But when he became JW, the sincerity and passion in his spiritual songs disappeared in my opinion. They felt like they came from a place of obligation rather than a wellspring of overwhelming belief. The Everlasting Now is a great song, but for me just lacks the conviction of Elephants & Flowers.

I said I only listened since he died...It's Matthews...I found that out...I didn't mean any disrespect towards her. If she did what she said she did and walked away that took true courage and is very admirable from a spiritual perspective for me....

I had a spiritual awakening in 2012, and only then began to see various references in his songs that I could directly relate to, while I now don't believe in a god as such, only a universal entity, to me it's separate from religion, in the ladder these words send an absolute warmth to me

A feeling of self-worth will caress u, the size of the whole wide world will decrease
Love of God's creation will undress u
And time spent alone my friend will cease

The whole 3rd eye thing he mentioned before and this is related completely to spiritually, he was connected to a higher source for sure, his third eye opened, is what separates greatness from genius.
All u haters need to recognize, if u cant c right through these lies, good gawd!

These are my thoughts - if you disagree thats completely fine - I don't wish to offend anyone - i know people have different religious and spiritual views

I was conscious of Prince's ”All love & thanks 2 God" aspect in his albums from the start when I first started buying his music in 82. I was raised catholic but rebelled against the controlling and hypocritical aspects of the catholic church as an institution. I think all organised religions and organisations, power structures and institutions in general are prone to aspects of institutional problems, narcissism, egoism. elitism, corruption and worse depending on the level/type of consciousness of the people in power. Poltics for example in this materialistic age by its very nature attracts people who desire power and prestige and paradoxically 'would be' politicians are often xactly the wrong type of person (or current type of consciousness) to wield power and rule over a population because they often have more self interest than interest in the general good of the people.

Despite my reservations about religious institutions I have mostly always believed a higher power exists, although I was agnostic for a time in my teens, but this world and its incredible design is imho impossible without a designer, to say it all came about by chance and by lightning hitting a piece of bacteria is a scientific cop out imho, and anyway where did the bacteria come from in the first place then.. (I have an MSc and Phd scientific research experience and worked at a high level in the scientific sector for a time so am familiar with so-called modern science - if you disagree with my view thats fine.. lets just agree to disagree.

In my 20s I suppose I was a kinda of a Taoist for many years - years before I had even heard the word Taoist i was writings Taoist like writings in my journal - then I discovered the Tao te Ching - I believe that Taoism was just a baby step on the path - that Taoism phase was over about 10 years ago 4 me - after my early Taoism phase I then studied various scriptures from different parts of the world to search for more complete knowledge
- I believe God exists external to us and that also a little piece of God is in each of us and Gods energy is everywhere. Imho you dont have to be in a church or temple necessarily to worship God. God and God's energy is everywhere. Worshiping God via a religion is competely fine imho if thats works for you - but God is not a religion or confined to a religion. God is God. And putting down anything but your own religion without just cause is a sign of illusion imho.

Anyhow i respect everyones belief whatever they may be - we each have our own path in this life - my answer to the Q is this - no Princes beliefs did not significantly influence me as I had my own path - BUT I have always been aware of the parallels and I believe Prince demonstrated himself to be very 'conscious' of the spiritual and I applaud his stance as a vegan. There are obviously a lot of tracks inspired by love of God and spiritual thoughts in his songs. Im conscious of the spiritual aspect that he seems to have developed more as the years went by and is reflected in his music.
'Way back home' appears (to me) to be a song about finding his way back to God.

We are all spiritual beings imho. Whatever happened physically maybe he found his 'way back' to his spiritual home.

God Bless Prince
