The Beautiful experience movie

I searched the forum for info on this and found some details on it. Apparently it was only aired in France and the UK and was later sold by Prince but was poor quality. As far as I know there is no legitimate way to purchase this anymore and never aired in the US. The thread I saw was from 2003 and wasn't able to reply to it.

Anyway.

Its online now. I found it by accident and its wacky and genius! Nona Gaye (who is beautiful in this) is interacting with an AI program she pays 19.99 for over the phone. She gets trapped in the videos she's watching. Lots of strange narration by her expressing her lack of self confidence and desire to find a man, spirituality and constant references to COME, even a button on her keyboard hard coded to this word lol. Prince playing guitar in a mustang convertible looks surreal. The music is very raw and some of it borders on New Jack Swing and straght dance music. Pretty brave and forward thinnking project by Prince for the time. This was in 1994, before the internet was even public for commercial use. Toward the end the video of "The most beautiful girl in the world" is there in its entirety. At the very end Nona stips down to her underwear during a wardrobe change and I must say she may be one of the most well put together women I've ever seen! 5' 10" and looks to be in excellent shape with amazing body proportions and ample fecundity. Recent pictures show her looking ever bit as good.

I wonder how many more projects like this are stored away in the vault?

This film was kind of my introduction to Prince. I loved it. So fututristic and all those unreleased songs!

It was shown in US nightclubs as part of a promo tour for The Beautiful Experience EP where they had masquerade balls and stuff like that.

I think it was sold through NPGOnlineLTD? A low-quality rip from Japanese TV.

It would be great if this was released on DVD somehow, it really is a treat.

I think that if NPGOnline were resorting to a TV rip then the original recordings may not even exist anymore.

Wow! I'd forgotten all about this. I had it on VHS for the longest time after I recorded it off the TV. Loved the clip for 'Race'. Just watched it again. Thanks for the heads-up.

I would kill for this on DVD. In a way, though, it's even more magical because it's been so hard to track down. It's almost like once you've watched it, you feel you dreamt it. Was that real?? My favorite thing about this film, is how the relationhip between him and Mayte seems to be bringing out the carefree, experimental, cocksure side of Prince. He seems so happy and idealistic here, it's like he's going absolutely bonkers with joy for living. He's cutting up and just acting soooo cute and cofident.

Mayte's so gorgeous and mysterious in this. They're interplay reminds me of a relationship I had in high school when I started dating this certain someone I'd been crushing on. I could barely breathe just being around this guy. And we were so excited about our new romance we would just hang out and laugh and smooch for hours. The breathlessness. You feel it with him and Mayte. I never sensed this ever before or after in Prince's relationships.

At the end of the stage concert, when Prince runs up to where she is on the riser, and spontanously plants a big long kiss on her, and then grabs her hand and walks off the stage with her...well....move over Cinderella. That has to be the most romantic moment ever caught on tape. They were swept up in their love. If anyone eared the right to be called Prince's muse, it's Mayte.

I could not get enough of this when I found it as a local record store back home. They had tons of bootleg shit back then. Prince In Rock, Hallowed B Thy Name, ..just endless stuff. The VHS rack was ripe with things like this. Love 4 One Another was the other I loved a lot. (I actually lived in Minneapolis, and found and bought that same dolphin candle.)

.

Nona's acting is corny, but the music was tight.

Are you sure it never aired in the U.S.? I read about it before it aired in Billboard (and distinctly remember the article claiming that the new smaller NPG was now called 10,000) - and it was shown a few times in Canada on MuchMusic.

I'm fairly certain it never aired in the U.S.

We would have known, and there would have been an NTSC bootleg back then.

In the UK it was shown on Sky One in April 1994 and had the 'Beautiful' video after the credits. It was shown on Christmas night on Channel 4 1994 without the 'Beautiful' video at the end, with slightly different editing, mostly Nona's scenes and some of the audio were changed.

Not so sure about the bootleg - Canada used the same format and one never surfaced (although I certainly had it taped!) - but I suppose you're right.

The Canadian version ended with the "Beautiful" video as well. It was also missing "Days of Wild" - a few too many f-words for the censors, I suppose!

Totally agree.

.

You've saved me typing the same thing.

.

Absolutely awesome, I used to play it endlessly.

.

There is a very good quality DVD bootleg in circulation from the Sky original broadcast.

.

The VH-1 special which complimented this is also awesome!!!

.

lol

I also taped this off Much Music here in Canada. I seem to recall that the end credits included music and/or sound effects from Blade Runner. Am I misremembering that?

I absolutely loved this, even though I'm obviously so sad about Prince passing, watching it again on YouTube after all these years I had a smile on face the whole time. Even after 20 years, every scene and dance move was somehow still imprinted on my brain.

When he did the LotusFlow3r website, many of the old videos were low-quality rips. This makes me think that the archiving of older material in the Vault may not be as comprehensive as many assume.

I think the closest we got to that in the U.S. was something called the VH1 Video Break or something where he took over the airwaves. At the time I actually was watching it, and believed that he really did it. Songs are Good Life, Count The Days, Dolphin, If I Love U 2nite. You can watch it here:
