Did Prince really give 100 songs to Albert Magnoli?

The Purple Rain director still insists that Prince gave him 100 songs to listen to..
Is he embellishing just a bit?
If this was true..
I would want to hear all 100 of those songs from thay amazing era.

speakeasy

I was just reading that interview and wondering about the same thing -->

http://www.salon.com/2016/05/05/how_purple_rain_found_its_anthem_we_both_knew_we_needed_to_find_just_the_right_song/

"I told Prince that we would need about 12 songs for the film. The very next day Prince handed me 100 songs that were already fully produced and recorded. I asked Prince for the lyrics, and then it was my job to go through all of these songs and select the ones that would work best for the film. The music needed to be integrated into the story, and the story needed to find itself in the music."

So if I'm reading this correctly--Magnoli basically decided which songs would be in the film (and thus) on the Purple Rain album.

Amazing!

We´ve had this question before and have never found a 100% correct answer but I still believe that Magnoli must have listened to many songs that predated the Purple Rain era.

When interviewed by Uptown magazine Revolution drummer Bobby Z. was asked about outtakes from the Purple Rain sessions, and apart from the songs we already know, for instance Wednesday, he said there weren´t that many songs , really, because they were busy with the movie and the required acting and dancing lessons and other stuff.

So I doubt that there are a hundred songs from that era.

Maybe if you combine all the songs of all the artists in his circle at the time...Apollina or Vanity songs, The Time songs, Sheila E. , etc. etc. you may come up with 40-50 songs, or maybe if 60-70 if you add some older Prince songs but even then, 100 would be a stretch.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"
