If Purple Rain was loosely based on his life, I do wonder if he did hit Vanity? Probably not but just wondering.

I know it's just a movie and all, but part of it was the time. The same way watching all those people smoking kinda sticks out now. That scene was to illustrate he's following down the same road as his ole man, Francis L. On a more realistic note, why would he slap the girl he met like 2 days before and just gave him a guitar? Was he that much in love after 3 days? But I don't think anyone watches Purple Rain for the bullet-proof plot and shakespearian acting performances.

Albert put pieces of Prince the Time Vanity6-Apollonia musical life together and made a film
Yes the 'competitive' creative nature of Prince and the Time was real.
but I don't think that other stuff was. His father wasn't an alcoholic, Prince did have some internal ideal of mixedness and breaking down race barriers. The movie was non racial.

Prince probably did hit vanity, like i said before, those things were much more commonplace 30+ years ago. Just wasn't that unusual. These days, where a guy could go to prison for it, we see it as unforgivable but go further back, you'll see films with Ronnie Reagan showing how to get a woman to listen by slapping the shit out of her.

No, IMO it wasn't generally accepted then. It's not like we're talking about way back when women were nothing but property. And there have always been decent, independently thinking people in every era. I remember reviews that pointed out the misogyny. Let me say it like this, these days I don't regard Prince as a beacon of freedom. It seems he did what many others do: they are all for freedom and human rights...as long as it benefits themselves, but no further than that. It's kinda disappointing, but he was always a musician to me, not a guru, and his musical attitudes certainly gave some nice results.

Probably not, Vanity didn't take any shit would have hit back and we would have all known about it
As Prince said it was a script for a movie

we don't know, we did have the rumor that he broke Jill Jones' hand. Like I said, it just wasn't that unusual then. Beating kids was accepted too, try it today and you'll get locked up quick.

^Exactly
Purple Rain isn't an autobiography.

Never ever heard that one. about Jill Jones, where did U hear that one... anything is just extreme speculation.
THE PRINCE INTERVIEW By Michael Shore A lot of people were offended by what they saw as sexism in Purple Rain. Now, wait, wait. I didn't write Purple Rain. Someone else did. And it was a story, a fictional story, and should be perceived that way. Violence is something that happens in everyday life, and we were only telling a story. I wish it was looked at that way, because I don't think anything we did was unnecessary. Sometimes, for the sake of humor, we may've gone overboard. And if that was the case, then I'm sorry, but it was not the intention.

yes, i've seen the mtv interview a million times, I know his take. He's right, he didn't write the script and some people are stupid enough to believe he had an italian momma to this day too. The Jill Jones thing, was in one of the books on him, may have been the Liz Jones book. It's been spoken about on here so it should be somewhere lost in the org.

it's a film and Prince did not write it (the script), [Edited 5/12/16 13:00pm] Prince 4Ever.

Huh?! I grew up in the 80s and NONE of this was remotely acceptable. I remember older people complaining when I was a kid about how kids don't receive spankings anymore and that's why this generation was so bad, etc.. And people accused of hitting women were looked at as monsters. I can't imagine it was that different in other parts of the country, were you in the US during the 80s? ya, white kids didn't get spankings but the rest of us got our asses beat, sometimes very badly, and the schools and teachers would usually look the other way. I have personal exp. with this. These days, I don't know the answer, but some of these kids need some kind of control. We got a bunch of spastics out there with no direction. We see Occupy kids who really don't even mean what they say, they just think it's cool to protest and pretend to be revolutionaries. And other kids, don't know that cops will shoot you over nothing if they get a chance.

whats slanderous | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
well, if that was said back then it wasn't in my community. But go ahead and believe what you want. Fact is, the further you go back the more commonplace it was. I heard stories from the old timers I was around that they'd get a beating "for the stuff I wasn't caught doing". It's not right but it's the way things were.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
and i have to say white people are ahead of the rest of us in this regard. We are still thinking it's ok to beat on people and I've known some people to get locked up over what used to be routine, I'm not talking beatings here, I'm talking pretty much any type of physical discipline. Being a thinking man, I don't really know what the answer is, but i also think that this system really doesn't want the parent disciplining the child anymore, that'll be all theirs to do. And do it they will with prisons etc..,

people talkin about him hitting vanity but you removed what i posted from a court case? ok. i'm just after answers about something, and I read a lot worse stuff than what I posted last nite on another post from awhile back that's still up.

well, you don't completely get me, but I know it's been there for everyone. this is just a violent country, but when you have cultures who were enslaved, beaten, tortured, and or taken to boarding schools and pretty much been attempted genocide, it's going to take some time to straighten that out. I don't particularly think it's fair to switch up on us so fast but I guess it'll do some good. I've seen all sides. White mom, black stepdad and Indian father. Out of those three only my dad never spanked me, (i'm told he popped me on the butt one time, but I don't remember).

anyway, your parents would not get away with that today, at least not in my region of the us, can't speak for the south, or whatever. all depends on the laws which vary.
