True Confession: Post Musicology I Barely Listened To New Music.... Help Redeem Me. What VITAL TUNES do I need???? Since Musicology I've barely listened to Prince's new music. This would cover 3121, LotusFlower, MLPLSound, etc.
These past several years I've just listened to my older Classic Era favorites...Basically Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, ATWIAD, Parade, SoTT, Lovesexy, etc.
What Top 20 Songs since 2005 or so do I need to listen to??
Help a Purple Brother out!

Good suggestions above but dont sleep on 20ten. It has three of the best tracks Prince has put out in forever: .
Future Soul Song (100% Prince classic)
Sticky Like Glue and Lavaux (80s sounding very fun tracks)
This was the first and last time he would revist that classic 80s minniapolis sounds since 1984. .
I also love his cover of "What if". You can find it on the youtubes.

Thank you! I love this thread as the only things I owned post musicology were AOA, plectrumelectrum, and HitnRun1. I do love plectrumelectrum especially Fixurlifeup and Another Love. It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN

His artistic arc is complete. There's only postumous releases now. So- enjoy his entire catelog and find what you dig. Late career prince is all over the place- from brilliance to not so much...but much of that can vary between listener's tastes. No list is going to be your list...enjoy his artistry and find your doves...

As far as late-period Prince goes, I'd say this was the best track since the Emancipation album. I'm no expert on the later stuff (or any of the other stuff, really), but it's by far my favourite track from the 2000's.

It was available on iTunes but it was removed after some time. . By the way, according to Princevault it was probably re-recorded in 2007 with updated lyrics, and there might also be a studio version from 2003/2004 (around Musicology). Curious about that one.. [Edited 5/10/16 14:26pm]

Absolutely nothing vital at all.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
. Tend to agree with that. But, as in all things, there are exceptions. These three are vital: . "Black Sweat" - from 3121 "Beautiful Loved And Blessed" - from 3121 "Another Lover" - from Plectrum

I posed this question in another thread and it's been great to get people's thoughts on this. I was a strong critic as early as Rainbow Children, and I didn't find enough in Musicology or 3121 to get me thoroughly back on board. With that said, posters on these threads have opened my eyes to some great stuff. It's hard to find amidst the mass of confusing releases, but it's there. "Essential" is a tricky word, but something like "Colonized Mind" has a meaningful place in the canon. Some of his guitar work on post-2007 work is stronger and more expressive than anything on earlier records. So my eyes have been opened to the value of exploring the later catalog, and it's helpful to be pointed to individual songs.

Sure its nothing vital.....if you are not a fan of Prince. (Insert something clever here)
