Why do think Prince was so into "family"?

I've read that he would like to talk to people, women especially I think, about family. I think I read that he was attracted to (in friendship if not other ways perhaps) women who had good family lives (meaning with their families of origin).

Why do you think this was? I find it interesting.

Probably because his family of origin was so unstable, he wanted to know what it was like to have a stable one.

I think he was trying to recreate that, only he had no idea how that thing worked, at all. Trust goes both way, and he seemed to find it difficult to extend the level of trust he expected from others, for whatever reason.

Thank you for that opinion.

I read that he did have relationships with his family including his sister and brother in law and parents and that he also took care of people in the family. I wonder if perhaps later on as Prince matured, he understood more and in loving being a teacher of sorts, and with his increasing spiritual understanding and life, if he maybe liked to share what he had learned and hear about others' success in this area.

There might've been a yearning too. Again this is all suppositions on my part.

I tend to agree with you on that, though. He was a tyrannical little bastard, but he also seemed like he was trying to keep people from leaving him, all the while slowly strangling the very life out of them.

Whether that was intentional or not, I have no idea and am not really gonna speculate on, but LAWD, that boy was a lot.

He wa kinda the poster boy for doing the most, too much, and EXTRA. biggrin

Probably because his seemed to be so dysfunctional. He seemed to have been treated shabbily by everyone in it. I think he wanted a happy families type of life. I know growing up in the 60's it was all Donna Reed, Andy Griffiths, Father Knows Best, etc. We were about the same age so if he saw those shows and knew what his own was like I know he would want to escape like I did.

I get it. I didn't even know my family was dysfunctional or what they had done to me. Talk about denial. And I wonder why a few years ago I had to watch every single Walton's rerun - EVERY SINGLE ONE - twice?

We seek out what we never had. And if there's one thing Prince didn't have as a child, it was stability. Moreover as an adult, he sought out people that could handle his eccentric & erratic ass. smile

I think Hollywood painted to wonderful a picture and nobody's family could live up to it. So we grew up feeling let down. He seemed to have a particularly hard time.

Abandonment issues I think. He once said " what if everyone around me split?" I have to protect myself..words to that effect. He was insecure and tested people's loyalty constantly. I think he did the rejecting before he was rejected which he always found very difficult to deal with. I also think he loved deeply but did not trust people deeply. He was perceptive and good at Reading people but when it didn't fit his narrative he became defensive. I believe he regretted rejecting some people, he said he used to be very cold, walk out and never look back but that he was trying to change. I think he was harsh to a few people he probably loved deep down but moved on anyway. I was surprised at that letter neal karlen talked about when Prince told him he loved him. It shows that he was open about his feelings and sometimes wore his heart on his sleeve. His songs reflect his feelings honestly. He wanted the loyalty and trust can you get from your family ( not always) and tried to recreate that.

My analysis..since you asked

Yup, diva vets are among my diva experiences too. They can be a handful alright.

I'm not quite sure though about the eyes. I suspect one stern look from His Divaness could bring me from forget-about-it to "So where do you want your camel, sir?" in five seconds. But the rest of the divas of the world? Not a chance.

Yes, it seems he was at some level consumed with worry that he would be left alone. And worrying, as they say, is praying for bad things. Sad vicious cycle. Perhaps his fame was directly proportionate to his worry, if that makes sense.

Breaks my heart that just when he thought he would have a stable loving family with Mayte and his baby... his whole world came crashing down. I never saw that kind of sparkle in his eyes after that. His fear was being alone. One of his bodyguards, Big Chick did say in an interview that Prince would often say he was lonely... even with all the fame and fortune. It is so hard to get over the fact he died alone. It breaks my heart

I saw an interview with pink where she talked about how you're all hyped up on stage during a show with the massive energy of thousands of people - and then at midnight it's over and you're in the limo all alone trying to come down from this huge high...it makes for lonely nights since most people are asleep while you're trying to relax after something like that that we will never understand.

Haha yes. That was just the hilarity. And I mean if all of that was see-able, I'd probably be staring, too. I mean, I saw that pic and was like, "Wow, that's.... a lot."

BUUUUT, back to the thread, here.

Honestly, I do think Prince was often lonely, personally. Not all the time, but sometimes, yeah. He struck me as a guy who would really like to just have family and friends around him, and be normal. He loved music, he loved playing, but he always seemed the calmest when he had someone to come home to, on top of it.

As much as I joke about him being extra and things, I do have a lot of compassion for him, and honestly, I suspect he was also really sweet when he wasn't being a little demon.
