Under The Cherry Moon Film

I'm shocked Under The Cherry Moon hasn't played on my cable system since he passed. I watched my DVD copy yesterday and was reminded how many great one-liners and scenes have remained engrained in my memories.... like "wrecka stow" and the "you did it to Mary's mom!" moment. Yes it has flaws that may not draw non-Prince fans to it, but the cinematography and the music kick ass. And Prince's sense of humour is fully on display. If it aired more often on cable I believe it could become a cult-classic and show the masses that Prince offered much more to the world other than Purple Rain. Am I wrong? Am I alone in thinking it was a better film than the general public did in '86?

There are so many things I love about this film. It reveals Prince's not so widely known talents as an actor, comedian and pianist. I also love the fact that it takes place in France (where I am from), and that Prince speaks a little french in it (even if only a little, but his accent was really good!). It also contains two of Prince's finest songs (SISIA and Boys & Girls). And you are right, it deserves a lot more recognition that it has gained so far. But deep down, I actually enjoy the fact that it hasn't become as big as Purple Rain, which makes this film even more special - like a well-kept treasure - and you can then still surprise non-fans, when they realise that it was also Kristin Scott Thomas's very first film!

I ordered it off Amazon for $3. I had it for a while but I do not know where it is! I had meant to order it for a while and it was in my basket for a long time. So when I placed the order i got it for $3.

I always looked at Under the Cherry Moon as a silly comedy than I believe what most of everyone wanted it to be: Purple Rain 2. That said, the movie isn't the best comedic film, however, as many of you have already said, Prince had some great one liners in the film. I wasn't too crazy that it was filmed in black and white but it grew on me after watching a few more times over the years. Another plus is that Prince was absolutely sexy in this film. From the custom wardrobe to his hair being on point!!!! Those eyes of his are definitely hypnotic. drool I have this on VHS, but since I don't have a VHS player anymore, I'll have to go on Amazon to purchase it on DVD (which it is surprisingly on backorder thumbs up! so folks really are interested in it now).

I watch it regularly, too. I got the DVD but downloaded it from iTunes months ago since it's more convenient for me to watch it anytime. Love that it's in black and white, and makes me want to visit Nice, France someday. Of course, it's sad watching it now knowing how the film ends. sad

The back order isn't taking that long. I couldn't find my copy either so I got it off iTunes and ordered the DVD. They didn't give an estimated time as I recall and I got mine Sunday. (7 daysish)

Haven't watched it yet. The end will bring on the waterfall... As if I haven't been a crying wreck everyday without it.

I agree though, I actually enjoy it more than PR. PR is fabulous, and the bluRay is so crisp and colorful but UTCM was definitely the movie that made me fall head over heels for him.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

I definitely have over the years which is why I haven't been watching it lately. I know that movie like the back of my hand. That's why right now my urge to watch UTCM and Graffiti Bridge has been much more greater because those were his most unpopular movies. I can say, that I've never been too crazy about Graffiti Bridge as it had a lot of cringe moments, but I haven't seen in many years so I'm willing to watch it once more.

I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

I have Comcast. I can watch all the movies for $3.99 in HD or $2.99 in SD.
I don't know why there not playing them on a regular cable channel though.
MTV showed Purple Rain when he passed, I don't know if they showed the other 2 movies.

UTCM is so old hollywood to me. Everyone looks amazing, the clothes, hair, music is wonderful---- I love this movie. Sometimes if I have a gathering at my house, I will put it on so that guests can watch as they meander around. Usually people will say, "Is that PRINCE?" smile

Right there with you. I understand that Purple Rain is an objectively 'better' film, but I still like UTCM more. Hope we get it on blu-ray soon!

I showed the film to my friend who can't stand The English Patient, to show Kristin Scott-Thomas' first feature film; he enjoyed the film immensely. He was one of the first to text me when he heard about Prince's death knowing how much I love his music. sad

I watched GB about a week ago. It's really him at his most vulnerable. He seems so sensitive and spiritual. I wondered if the "success" of the film got to him. He was trying to say something about the music that was coming out and he was right. There were thieves and they stole the soul of music.
Surprise, surprise.

I'm not surprised. The film was a huge critical and commercial flop. Let's get real. The ONLY people that can somewhat enjoy this film are his diehard fans. The narcissism and bad script are almost torture. It's better than Graffiti Bridge tho, one of the worst movies ever made by a popular artist.

You liking something isn't unpopular. It's your thang.

For me, it's apples and oranges. One is a love story, one is a musical. Purple Rain ain't necessarily funny in a broad sense. Under The Cherry Moon isn't a battle of bands, nor a music video.

Now - ya get over to Graffiti Bridge, and we're gon' have to talk.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I 100% agree with u on this one. It's so good. Purple Rain was hot but UTCM was so different and had alot of humor in it. And the music...insane. Loved that it was in France too!

Hey Riotpaisley: I agree with you on GB review so weird I watched it too this week on repeat and thought the same thing. I get what Prince was trying to say and wonder too if the flop of it hurt Prince's spirit. Dang it!

As a kid, I can remember "Graffiti Bridge" getting a lot of play on the cable movie networks around the time of it's home video release. Now that I think about it, I saw GB before Purple Rain lol. VH1 aired UTCM more frequently in the mid-late 90's as well. BET aired it quite a bit when they changed up their format in the late 90's and early '00s. It's been quiet up until now.

Question:
In UTCM, why was Prince wearing a ring? Was it a wedding ring?
