http://www.bestbuy.com/site/dirty-mind-pa-cd/411101.p?id=95480&skuId=411101 Is not a remaster if that's what you're asking. It's hard right now cuz I feel they are just trying to sell as many current pressings as possible and then they will turn around and remaster. I tried to play my Batman a few weeks before he died and it was scratched to the point of unlistenable. My computer crashed so I lost all my digital versions and will have to reupload everything but I'm worried how many will have the same problem. I know for sure R2JF is the same situation... Looks like that one maybe lost forever. But anyway- I want to buy copies now but know remasters are most likely coming I find I'm in quite a pickle. I did find Prince with I Wanna Be Your Lover at Barnes and Noble for 5.99 so maybe shop around first. Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

If it hasnt failed and just your operating system isn't working you should in theory should still be able to access the files via another method. Also if you have cloud storage and you can recover them I'd upload them to it too so you have a backup plus CDR and DVDR discs to backup for your digital versions. I think if the Windows OS is corrupt you have use like Linux rescue disc and access your files that way. If not there's data recovery programs but I'd use those with caution as they sometimes can overwrite over files and arent 100% reliable. Hope this helps.

Not sure if it was released on CD initially as at that point it woulda been vinyl, cassette and possibly 8 track. The CD may have come later. Not sure. I didn't get a CD player until 1993 - like ten years after it came out. I got it on cassette in 89 I think. Vinyl a couple of years ago. Comin str8 outta Preston...

Dirty Mind came out in 1980 and if I'm correct CDs didn't come into being until 1982 so there would no 1980 release of Dirty Mind on compact disc. I assume when the record labels realised the value of their back catalogues they utilised CDs to re release albums, so the first CD pressing of DM would be around the late 80s, early 1990s at a push.

Yes I inadvertently wiped my hard drive. I bought some software that pulled everything off, at that time I was mostly concerned about some photos I had lost. I *think* I have the music too... I did back everything up to disc in 2006 and to an external that also seems to have failed but I can use the software to get that back. Unfortunately my R2JF was scratched already when I ripped it. I'll have to check the cd. I hope I bought stuff from the NPG music Club (I had chocolate invasion, xenophobia) prior to 2006 or its forever, for now anyway. I just haven't had time to go back and get everything into my new drive. I have 1TB OF iCloud storage now though! Always make CURRENT back ups your hard drive... LESSON LEARNED Surprise, surprise.

LESSON LEARNED You're welcome and yep I had something similar happen to me before when I added my Prince albums to Real Player so this is going back years. I think I got a virus and lost them but luckily I still kept the original CDs. I had to replace Parade as mine jumped but I bought a new one about 13 years ago (time flies) and Emancipation too. If you have EAC program it might be able to rip Rave again if you alter some of the settings. I tried it with a Donny Hathaway live CD which was scratched and it ripped OK so it should be fine. Windows media player used to have an option to ignore errors so you could try that too. I would definitely back up everything on iCloud and also on like Google drive etc so if you get an issue again you won't have to re rip CDs. Also maybe make CDR backups of the original discs too so that's another backup option.

Those are the same link.
However, as others mentioned, there were no CD's originally released by WB... This isn't the original CD that came out in the mid 80's either but it may be the second revision. There have been no remasters of this on CD though, either way.

Sorry if this is a dumb question I read somwehre a few days ago that the "Planet Earth" cd was limited edition in the hologram version. Now I am trying to search for that site but can't remember where I read it. Would anyone tell me if the hologram version was (is) limited edition? I found one on ebay for pretty cheap so I am wondering.

Lastly, this may help to explain remastering.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
As far as I know, none of Prince's official WB releases were remastered. The CD that came out in 1988 is the same as 1990. If Tidal has Dirty Mind -- the FLAC will likely be the same as the CD. There have been Japanese SHM releases, but there's been no proof from my recollection that those CDs -- or the so called remasters of Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain on vinyl (from a few years ago) are anything different than what we already have on CD/vinyl. . Not even the Gold layered Around The World In A Day (Germany) or Purple Rain (Japan) are any different than the ones we got for free from Columbia House/BMG in the 90s

I never knew so many bootlegs and "fake" CDs existed.
I want to purchase the Vinyl and CD versions of "Controversy" "For You" "Dirty Mind" and "N.E.W.S."
I would like the original versions. Ebay has tons of CDs and Vinyls of them. I don't know which ones are real and which ones are fake. Would anyone who knows please post here or PM me e-bay links to real items? (Or other links)
Thanks

You're correct. If I'm not mistaken, Sign O' The Times was the first Prince album released on CD during its debut, and it wasn't until 1990 when the remainder of his back catalog was reissued on that format. The recording industry didn't start to fully embrace digital until 1986 and it took about 3 years before the public embraced it in favor of vinyl and cassette. Dig if U will the picture of U and Marvin Gaye and the kids.

Just look for sellers with high positive feedback numbers and that are in the US (assuming you are, as well). There shouldn't be a lot of "fake" versions of "Controversy" "For You" "Dirty Mind" and "N.E.W.S." going around. Also, in this case, those that have return policies too if it makes you feel better.
However, I'd think you could buy most of those from Amazon for a fair price.

. The best website (that I've found) is discogs. You can use paypal and prices aren't obscene right now like they are on ebay. You won't find boot copies of any of the 4 releases you mentioned. I highly recommend checking out this site for some pretty awesome information on all of the vinyl versions that have been released by Prince. . Your best bet would be to go to a used CD store where you live. They are likely to have vinyl versions of Controversy & Dirty Mind (and maybe even a used copy of For You) as the first two were re-released on vinyl only a few years ago. As for CD versions of NEWS - you're going to get hit in the pocket for that no matter where you buy it. . Finding CD versions of For You, Controversy and Dirty Mind will be simple. Best Buy should have those. If you can be patient, all of those will be available NEW on CD and vinyl in the coming months because Warner Bros will take advantage of his passing to make money. (Assuming they have the rights still to do so...) . But "N.E.W.S." has never been released on vinyl. And the CD is pretty rare. Prince fans aren't likely to give up their copies unless they can get a pretty price for it. . Good luck!

. "Lovesexy" is the last Prince album I bought on vinyl. After that, all Prince releases I bought on CD. Had to go back and buy the earlier albums on CD. Funny, my "Dirty Mind" CD is a Warner Brothers release but pressed in West Germany? Have no idea what I bought back then but the CD is the album I know and love. . Last Prince album cover in my collection. Went out with a bang, no? . [img:$uid]http://www.hooksandharmony.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/lovesexy-e1428702580419.jpg[/img:$uid]

THere is a torrent out there with all his albums in lossless format.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
If she doesn't know what a remaster is, she definitely doesn't know what a torrent is. . And there is nothing wrong with that. . My best advice would be to either buy them at msrp at a retailer like Best Buy -- or wait for the best possible versions to come out -- which will happen now, since he has passed away. Warner will finally get the rights to remaster -- and we will finally get all of the best of the extended versions and b-sides in the best possible sound there is. . That is, assuming Warner doesn't screw things up. Get Steve Hoffman and Susan Rogers together to make some magic.

Susan Rogers most certainly but not really wanting Hoffman involved.

i got my first CD player in the summer of 1988 and I my first DM CD at that same time. It was gray and was made in germany. I am not sure when it was first put on CD. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

i think ATWIAD was released on CD at launch. the long box folded out and had a small album sleave in side with a little pocket and it had all the lyrics...but I got that in late 88...but i do not think they would have done a special packaging 2 years later for on CD of a catalog (and i think there were only a few acts that got that packaging. ALSO! ATWIAD was one of the first tapes to use clear plastic (One other was Mötley Crüe – Theatre Of Pain) "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

According to discogs the first DM CD came out in 1984 and it was also re released in 1987. Interestingly both have the same catalogue number so I assume the only way to tell if you have a first CD pressing is to look at the date on the back cover.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
That probably won't help you as I have the first pressing and it lists 1980 on the CD and back of the case. It is the US release, made in West Germany by Polygram.
