I listened to "Around the World in a Day" for the first time in probably 20 years yesterday and really enjoyed it.

I can see why some were disappointed - it doesn't have a lot in common with "Purple Rain" - but it's Prince being more introspective. Lovely in a lot of ways.

I'll admit I was one of those hardcore 80s fans who felt a bit put off by Prince's sharp turn into a more adult contemporary sound with Diamonds and Pearls and beyond. I enjoyed a lot of thsi stuff, but it felt like he wasn't making music for me anymore. There are so many great jams from the 2000s that I'm both discovering and redisovering.

Also, Baltimore is so much better a song than I initially gave it credit for upon relisten. I guess maybe I was anticipating an angrier protest song in the vein of Sign O' The Times, but it really is quite beautiful.

It was a modest hit. It reached #8 on the Hot 100 and #3 on the R&B charts in the US.

i've been listening to Don't Play Me when i'm feeling bitter about all the love he's getting now that he deserved while he was still here (i know it's a useless way to feel & all the love is good, but now & then...) the phrase "u couldn't play enough of me now / to make me feel like a star / don't play me, i already do in my car / don't play me" is SO JONI IN EVERY WAY. even what he does with his voice. i wasn't familiar enough with her when it came out to make that connection, although i knew she was a big influence for him.

I've always been a big Joni Mitchell fan and when I discovered a few years ago that Prince was one as well it really warmed my heart. I have since noticed so many similarities between them in the way the lyrics are written and sung. He was such a kaleidoscope of sounds and influences, I am constantly re-discovering his work and could never grow tired of anything he did.

Been thinking about Mayte recently for obvious reasons. 'Aint No Place like U' & 'However Much U Want.'
