OK, Time To Talk About It: "Hypno Paradise"

.

.

The one Prince song that is his most outrageous, offbeat, over the top, strange, puzzling, flat out weird is "Hypno Paradise." That 25 minute Prince song "The War" is like a Taylor Swift song compared to "Hypno Paradise."

.

So what do you think of it?

.

I don't want to poison the jury pool with my opinion, but it is my thread so I have to give my two cents. I think when all is said and done and the final book is written about Prince, "Hypno Paradise" will go down as one of his top five masterpieces. The song is so fucking ridiculous. So absurd. At times flat out idiotic. In other words, it's friggin' genius! I love it. No other artist in the world other than The Beatles could release such an outlandish piece of work (The Beatles did it with their song "You Know My Name, Look Up The Number"). Prince had immense talent, but more important than that he had balls and a devious sense of humor. It takes a real wicked sense of humor to come up with a song like "Hypno Paradise" and it takes brass balls to release the darn thing. Oh, Prince, will I miss you. Only you could give me that "What the fuck is this?" pleasure while playing some new material from you. And believe me, the first time "Hypno Paradise" came out from my speakers I literally said aloud, "What the fuck is this?!?"

.

Oh, I love that tune.

I only have one question.

Is it Hypnoparadise, or Hypno Paradise (that's how it was listed in the NPGMC download)? Possibly Hypnoparadise. Who knows.

As for the song, I'm just not a fan of this sound. At all. Sounds like it could have been on NPS, which is a disaster minus a few tracks.

With that said, Slaughterhouse had "Northside" -- the only song from Slaughterhouse that I don't skip when it comes up in iTunes. Daisy Chain is nice too, but then you have another goddamn guest rapper ruining what is an otherwise good song.

What's so bad about the new power soul album? I listened to it last night and it's actually really good .if there was a weak track on it I would say its "I like funky music" but even that one is good . come on ,there's some good funk on new power soul .u should revisit that album if u haven't in a while

I've had NPS since it came out. It even has sentimental value because an orger sent it to me when I lived on Hawaii because it wasn't available there. I am just not a fan of that time period.

An overlooked, often forgotten gem of the NPGMC era. Very cool, breezy, slightly trippy sounding tune. Def. one of the hippest tracks on The Slaughterhouse. Lyrics seem fairly siimple to me. Just sounds like he fell madly in love with a pretty hypnotherapist cool

.

Seriously though, did P. ever mention having undergone hypnosis? I gotta check the '96-'97 Oprah interview to see if he mentions using this kind of therapy.

NPS is not a great album because it's the kind of music Prince set out to avoid at the beginning of his career, which is wall to wall conventional rnb/funk. Now I am big on rnb, love all the classic acts and many new ones, but NPS was uninspired melodically and the production is so plastic on some songs.

I believe HM Buff said that the whole album was just rough mixes.

I had a very pleasurable experience once listening to this whilst smoking a joint, but that was years ago, another time. Can't say it gives me the same audiogasm without unfortunately.

But that one time! biggrin

Totally agree that it's unique in his catalog, but I have to be in the right mood for this one. It sounds purposely off-key to me in many places.

Isn't Silver Tongue on there? That's my jam. Northside too... Being from the Northside.

I finally agree with something Cloreen says! Hypno is weird. I don't like the chorus but the verses are ok. Every time it comes on I expect to see an old navy commercial. It has a very love boaty feel.
Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Yeah, it is so music-for-a-TV-commercial-you-would-see-during-an-episode-of-"Friends." That's what makes it so off the wall from Prince. I know he wasn't setting out to do, as you say, an Old Navy commercial. But it sure would fit that.

.

It's a freaky song, no doubt. The oddness of it makes it a great Prince moment.

To be fair almost everything from this period sounds like it could have come from NPS.

I love this song! It sounds like Prince was having a Barbarella fantasy on this one.

always sounded like a straight up Emancipation outtake to me.

still don't know if i like it or not. but i'll usually let it play all the
way through before thinking 'should i have hit skip?'.

it's a conundrum, that song. i guess that's a good thing lol

"Rough" is a good way to describe NPS.

No, Silver Tongue is not available on anything. It was a virtual b-side to "Call My Name" available through NPGMC. And only in 128kbps. So when you see it on a bootleg, they stretched the 128kbps to a CD -- so when people rip it again... well... you get my point.

Would have liked to have seen it make it on a record, or at least on Tidal in lossless. Oh well.
