Just got back about an hour ago. I posted a couple vids on youtube, one of Stevie Wonder's finale singing Purple Rain. Eric Benet had to whisper the words to Stevie as he was singing. Thought he knew the song. There was another r&b singer just before that who didnt know the words to Rasberry Beret and had to also have Eric come out to help him. Eric Benet actually did a nice job earlier on singing I Wanna Be Your Lover. It was strange seeing him on the side line singing along to every Prince song that the dj was spinning. Faith Hill did a nice version of I Feel For You. Some other new r&b singer did Do Me Baby with just guitar and vocals that was really good. Marva King performed Kiss with the twins! Jellybean Johnson, Monte Moir and Jessie Johnson made an appearance to just say hello, no The Time didnt perform but said they would be playing tomorrow night together. A Time reunion? The house band was really solid with Kat Dyson,Morris Hayes and Cassandra O'Neal. One of the horn players was also introduced as Prince's last horn arranger.
Overall it was a fun time with a few thousand people in attendance. Two dj's played all the hits which was a lot of fun for all.

Adding to that... It was very nice. As I thought, I was not ready but at least I went by myself so I could cry in peace and think in peace. I got to talk to one of the twinz after the show. It was Maya. I didn't ask for a pic because she was leaving and I didn't want to be rude. She was very kind though. I also talked to Prince's former bass player and took a pic with him. I was waiting for my ride so we got to talk. Everyone was so humble and relaxed. Just wanted to do something for him. The audience was a little obnoxious at times but it is what it is. Eveyone seemed to have a good time and they were able to honor him. That is all that mattered. One of the Dj's was the origional DJ for the Glam Slam back in the day. I thought that was a nice touch rather than just hiring anybody. The Hornzzz were AMAZING!!!! Which is to be expected... No less from the NPG. They did a really nice job on such short notice. There was also an artist that painted to Prince works while everyone jammed. The doves were lovely, too. Though this tribute was nice, I do hope they do another that includes more people he worked with and cared about (Sheila E, The Time, 3rdeyegirl, The Revolution, Appollonia, Rosie Gaines, possibly the Game Boyz ect) This was a great start though! Anyone there who remembers the first guy that performed??.... Ermmm???

did anyone get a chance to punch eric benet in the face? or his wife or maybe their crosseyed kids?

feeling some kinda way about hthose two and school bullshit! sorry.

Eric being asked to be there really bothered me and to think she was maybe there with him is just beyond comprehension to me. Sorry, considering the history I guess I shouldn't expect this from them, but show some respect to him. He deserves that. And again considering the past history, Eric Benet singing "I wanna be your lover" is not a respectful tribute to Prince in any way and I know it is not my call, but I still feel he should not be part of a memorial meant to celebrate Prince's life. Sorry just my opinion, though thnkimg about it, Prince would probably say not to dwell on the past and nothing is unforgivable.

Yeah I thought it was weird for him to be performing as well but oddly enough no one booed him. When he came out towards the beginning, he was the first well known singer on stage so people just seemed to be happy to see someone they had heard of. Like I said he was excited and singing along on the sidelines, at one point trying to get the crowd to sing along to LRC. I looked but never saw Manuela though.

That IS a bit weird indeed but on the other hand it takes some balls and confidence, and respect, to even take part at such an event when you´re married to the deceased person´s ex.

I think it´s quite classy that he helped Stevie with the lyrics and that he even knew so many Prince lyrics in the first place.

But I agree, it is very odd that he´d be there at all, let alone sing I Wanna Be Your Lover.

We don´t know how well they got along.

A buddy of mine years ago (who is also a huge P fan) told me that Eric once did a show in Minneapolis around the time his first record came out ("True To Myself"), and was invited to jam with P at Paisley Park. Knowing the way our man called the shots, he probably recorded that session and it's in the vault. It is kind of weird that he would be there, but at the same time he's said (in the past) he was a big fan....Somewhere on line there's a interview with Eric and he said he unexpectedly met Mani at a party. They hit it off and the rest was history. Sometimes in the industry I guess you just meet people.

Prince's estate (aka Tyka or whoever) released a statement that said no official tribute or ceremony has happened yet, but they are planning one soon. So whatever has happened in the interm is unofficial relating to Prince's people..

.

I heard it was a great turn out though.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

If so many ex-bandmembers and fans were there, and they reminisced about Prince and showed love, then I don´t care if it´s unofficial according to "Prince´s people", whoever they are.

Who in his right mind has the nerve to decide what is "official", now that he is no longer alive?

Where were they ten or twenty years ago?

No disrespect, really, but that´s how I feel about this.

Hey don't shoot the messenger here. I'm just relaying an article I saw this morning. I totally agree with you actually. I'm glad folks showed up & celebrated his life & music.

Oh, sorry if I sounded aggressive. My comment wasn´t directed at you. wink

I´m just concerned about seeing two different "camps" after his death.

I gotcha. wink

And I'm sure there's going to be more than a couple of groups of grubbers before the dust settles. I'm actually trying my best to not read a lot of stuff out there. It's all rehash. The minute by minute updates are often pointless, miscontrued, or flat out worthless.

.

I'm waiting on the autopsy & toxicology (the latter of which I oddly sing like "Musicology" when I say it in my head). That's the truth I want first. Whatever it is, it'll shut up a lot of people.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Only because I know how some fans here feel about him. I personally didnt think there was anything wrong with him being there just weird since he's married to an ex but yeah it showed a lot of self confidence and security on his part.
