A Tribute to Prince by His Hairstylist - Allure.com

Prince's hairstylist of 28 years, Kim Berry, gives Allure an intimate look at the famously private musician.

http://www.allure.com/beauty-trends/blogs/daily-beauty-reporter/2016/05/prince-hairstylist-kim-berry.html?mbid=social_twitter

"I was dating one of Prince's bodyguards when his hairstylist quit—she'd taken a liking to me and I was like, 'Girl, you work for the biggest entertainer in the world!' My dad said success is where opportunity meets preparedness, so the day she quit, I went up to Prince's table at the nightclub and laid my portfolio out in front of him. He knew I had to be somebody because I'd gotten up to his table and that was unheard of.

Prince and Berry in Rome. "We were coming out of a salon and he started taking pictures of the paparazzi. It was super dope. I think it's poetic, the way it came out—I always had his back, and here I'm standing behind him."\

Beautiful. This is what I hope that we, as fans, will carry on in his name. (Of course not giving out millions, as though we have that kind of cash laying around, but looking out for everbody and giving what we can of ourselves.)

And for those that don't know, Earl was Jill Jones' uncle. (Yes, most of us know, but the noobs might not.)

That was a real nice read. Hmm, 28 years... so if she was with him 'til the end, she joined up in 1988!

Yeah, which is odd, because Earl Jones is listed as hair stylist for Prince on Graffiti Bridge, on IMDB. That was 1990. She's not in the credits at all (not that it's indicative of who did what on a day to day basis). Either way, 28 years is a lot longer than I realized.

Maybe there's a Screen Hairstylist's Union, and Jones was a member? lol

You're exactly right. Now it is easier for someone in Prince's position to get their personal hair stylist hired on a TV/film project.... They can just get the show to get (and pay for) their stylist into the union and the project then also pays the stylist during that time instead of the artist, which is how they can get an IMDb credit. But back in the 80's, I've heard due to union rules, even for big music videos, personal hair stylists were not even allowed in trailers or on set. So while she may have even been doing his hair from home, it would be very very hard for her to get any kind of screen credit or the union could find the producers and the movie. Much easier to get credit on an album. I found it interesting to read they had discussed developing a product line, too.

Wow... I was only joking, but there you go!

Are they part of IATSE, or do they have their own thing?

The hair and make up Union/Guild is called "Local 706" and operates with an IATSE contract. That's so funny you were joking and were totally right. smile

She must have a lot more stories than this after 28 years!
I like that she mentioned one example of his random acts of kindness. "Million" to each family - kinda makes me think I shoulda been under a falling bridge when Prince was around!

Sorry, had to do this during these sad times. A lot of hair time was spent making it look so good.
