I've read that folks went to Spotify and Appple streaming, and YouTube. Not finding him on those platforms, folks instead BOUGHT the albums. Both physical copies and digital.

If Prince hadn't purged his music from the internet, it's very doubtful he would have sold anywhere near what he sold.

Maybe he was right after all?

Of course he was right.

And it's always about the quality of the work. His 80's peak is always going to be the work that sells.

It's mind boggling that he is outselling Bowie/MJ combined by 10x post death. I always thought Prince was more of a boutique artist with flashes of huge popularity...similar to Bowie (without Purple Rain).

I was looking at the Billboard Top 200 album chart last night and was surprised at how many albums he has in the Top 60. Almost all of the WB albums are there, including all four of the pre-1999 albums. The only ones I didn't notice were "Diamonds" and "The Gold Experience", which I believe someone said in another thread are both OOP??? Also, surprising, that "HitNRun 2" is not even in the Top 40 (although I believe it is on the R&B side).

Prince is outselling MJ and Bowie only in the USA . Abroad, it's another story...It could have been bigger if his albums were available, including his WB catalogue, that nobody could purchase in France for instance, because it was nowhere to be seen.

HNR2 ? They didn't print enough copies to be in top 40. Huge mistake

The older albums I have seen in stores are Prince, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World and Parade. There's a section for each at Best Buy (minus Prince, I seen that at Barnes & Noble.)

But, they count both digital downloads and physical CD copies as sales for chart positions. People claim downloads are more popular than CD's now days. I was just really surprised the public doesn't seem interested in his new music, only back catalog.

You dont hear his new music on the radio, so they'll walk right past it and pick up a best of or 1999 before HNR.

All the album sales since his death can be seen here in this thread, as I've been updating them every week.

You can get AOA, Hitnrun 1, and Hitnrun 2 on Amazon right now.

HitnRun Phase 1 is the #28 best selling album in the world right now with over 28,000 copies sold. Can't believe it.

Wow, the sales figures for the top 100 keep getting lower and lower.

Actually, what's also interesting is how much more Prince is selling as opposed to MJ, Whitney, Bowie, etc...

.

In fairness, there's a lot more material from Prince than MJ and Whitney combined. An album every year, opposed to every 4,5, or 6 years.

.

Once you're dead, there is no race or contest anymore.

It's not about it being a race, only that it's interesting from a sales standpoint. AND, because a great majority of those albums are OOP I'm not exactly sure he has more than they do actually available at retail. The local Best Buy has "Prince" "1999" "Purple Rain" "Around the World" and "The Very Best of"... nothing else. The nearest Walmart didn't even have a section devoted to him, etc...

Additionally, saying the others sold less because more people had their releases... I'm not sure that's it either, Purple Rain surely is owned by more people than any other release and it's the second best seller. I feel like in death he's reach an audience that's completely eluded him for the last several decades.

Are you kidding?

It was supposed to be released on 29th april. This release was terribly handled. It could have been a top 3 all around the world, but for some reasons unexplained, UNiversal doesn't want to promote it.

Even AOA had more promotion...

The album is right near the front door at my local Best Buy in a kiosk along with a select number of his other albums. People are just gravitating more toward his back catalog. Not really sure I'd want Phase 2 being what "new" fans hear first anyway....
