Storyville.... Prince & Questlove. I was listening to Questlove talk about prince and then thought , I really hope he does a story about him and prince in the style of the patti la belle one. Say what you will about Questlove, but he has an enjoyable way of telling stories.Funny to imo.
Then eye looked on youtube to see that he actually did one 3 months ago! I didn't check to see if it's already been posted so sorry, but it is so nice to hear prince stories esp now.
This story is a bit odd to me however. I might be reading it wrong but to me , It makes questlove pressume to think Prince hadn't heard of fela kuti and was trying to push it on prince when he prob knew who he was and wasn't in the mood for it? Stubborn dj trying not realising prince wasn't feeling the music? idk

Hell no! That dude is annoying and entitled twat that makes everything about him when it comes to Prince. Somebody who worked with Prince much more closely that wouldn't let their fandom get to their head i.e. like Wendy And Lisa or Eric Leeds. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

Interesting that you choose 3 white people from all the people that worked with Prince. What qualifies them for that? I am just sick of seeing people immediately calling for Wendy and Lisa as if they were some geniuses or even around for most of Prince's career. To each his own - I dont expect anything else from most fans who are not black. To each his own. If someone had to be called inm I would say Dez Dickerson, Andre Cymone, or perhaps Jam and Lewis - proven producers who have known Prince longer and better. Probably because Wendy and Lisa were allowed to basically co-produce his music during his (what most consider to be) his classic period. He wrote and released a song about missing their contributions to his music and life. I don't recall an " In This Dez I Scream". Stop being racist. Chili Sauce.

My thoughts were Wendy and Lisa have been producing all these years and doing a pretty damn good job at it. I knew someone was going to say they were too white for the vault. That's so absurd. Music is for everyone and Prince crossed all genres. W&L have the skill. No one ever said they should be the sole producers anyway. It would make sense that it be a collaboration of people who worked with him and hopefully they can all agree on his style and work ethic - the damn sure knew his vision. Music is for everybody and I thought that was one thing Prince always believed. Yes, he was very much about empowering black lives, we definitely need that today in light of recent history and current events- but Prince is the LAST person on Earth who I would ever believe would say, nah I ain't working with them cuz they white. PUHLEASE!!!! Wendy and Lisa are SERIOUS musicians and draw from just as wide a variety of music as Prince did. That's what makes them qualified. Guaranteed, Prince knew who Beck is. Furthermore... Let's talk about how black folks reacted to Prince in the 90s shall we? I was one of 4 white kids in my HS and I got made fun of RELENTLESSLY for liking Prince. So. Don't go there. Surprise, surprise.
Another treat. Another trick.

Questlove does a DJ residency at Brooklyn Bowl at least once a week, and he did an all-Prince set after Prince died. Of course, he played Finding Nemo on the screens to reference this story.

Interesting that you chose to harp on the race of the musicians I mentioned rather than the quality of musicians and collaborative history that Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman and Eric Leeds have with Prince which would certainly help curate Prince's vault material, especially when they saw Prince's creative process for themselves. Just for your informaton, I am Black. 3121 #1 THIS YEAR

sorry for my post being quite squashed together. I don't know how to post the actual youtube video so you can click it.
Anyway, didn't you think the story was a bit weird. Quest was going on about how prince would love fela kuti and then when prince tells him to play something different, questlove takes that to mean , hmm maybe he'd like a different type of fela kuti song.
Does this whole story not make questlove seem kinda delusional and stubborn and then at the end, is he suggesting prince is playing fela because he suddenly realised how good he is or because he just wanted it played at that specific party . I didn't get the end bit. Just seems like prince didn't feel like hearing fela that particular night and Quest couldn't understand that.weird

I may be wrong, but I think Quest was trying to say that he may have turned P on to Fela's music. A lot of people get down on Quest but I like hearing his P stories because he's a huge fan. I remember reading his story online that he was watching a "Purple Rain" bootleg with all of the uncut scenes (the studio fight with Jellybean, the love scene in the barn) and many fans became ballistic and refused to believe it. Shoot..I wanted to send him a e-mail and ask if he would sell me a copy. Quest is truly living the dream.

Questlove is just like the rest of us... A massive fan. He may have had access which we never got and he may have heard (aquired) music we have never heard, but it is very clear he is a huge fan of Prince, and that makes him alright in my book.

Yeah, me too. Like the rest of us fans, he will respect the music. The problem with getting ex band members involved is if anything needs mixing they may feel inclined to bring their instrument to the fore. This is definatly a job for someone who knows Prince's music but was never actually a part of helping to create it.
