Prince is killing the charts

Prince's 'Purple Rain' Is Week's Top-Selling Song Again, as Eight of His Hits Chart on Hot 100

"Purple Rain" reigns again as the week's top-selling song, as eight Prince hits appear on both the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. "Rain" also rules the Hot Rock Songs chart.

Following a full tracking week afterPrince's death on April 21, several of his classics grace the Billboard Hot 100, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and even Hot Rock Songs charts (dated May 14).

(This week's charts will post tomorrow, May 3, on Billboard.com.)

As previously reported, Prince claims five titles in the Billboard 200 album chart's top seven. The Very Best of Prince ranks at No. 2 with 391,000 equivalent units earned (although up 118 percent) and 216,000 copies sold (up 116 percent), according to Nielsen Music. The Purple Rain soundtrack places at No. 3 with 150,000 units (up 117 percent) and 133,000 copies sold (up 113 percent), followed by The Hits/The B-Sidesat No. 4 (106,000 units, up 159 percent, and 56,000 in sales, up 134 percent); Ultimateat No. 6 (40,000 units, up 319 percent, and 37,000 in sales, up 317 percent); and 1999at No. 7 (36,000 units, up 154 percent, and 33,000 in sales, up 149 percent).

Along with buying his albums, fans praised Prince by purchasing many of his individual hit songs, as eight rank on both the Hot 100 and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. (Older songs are allowed to return to the charts if registering notable renewed activity and ranking in the upper half of each list.) His songs are led by "Purple Rain," the top-selling song of the week for a second week, as it holds atop the Digital Songs sales chart with 282,000 sold, up 132 percent. "When Doves Cry" ranks at No. 2 on Digital Songs (198,000, up 98 percent), making Prince the first act to hold the sales chart's top two ranks in the same week since Taylor Swift, whose "Out of the Woods" and "Shake It Off" placed at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively, on Nov. 1, 2014,

Prince sports seven songs in the Digital Songs top 10, as, below "Rain" and "Doves," he appears with "Little Red Corvette" (No. 4; 161,000, up 90 percent); "Let's Go Crazy" (No. 5; 156,000, up 107 percent); "1999" (No. 6, 147,000, up 127 percent); "Kiss" (No. 7; 144,000, up 77 percent); and "Raspberry Beret" (No. 8; 127,000, up 158 percent).Prince sets a record with seven songs in the Digital Songs top 10 at the same time. He bests Michael Jackson, who logged six of the top 10 on July 11, 2009, following his June 25, 2009, death.

Let's break down Prince's chart activity, rank by rank, on the Hot 100, Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot Rock Songs.

HOT 100
With sales largely driving his placements on all three charts, here are Prince's eight titles on the Hot 100:

Position (Last Week), Title (Original Hot 100 Peak, Year)
No. 4 (17), "Purple Rain" (No. 2, 1984)
No. 8 (20), "When Doves Cry" (No. 1, five weeks, 1984)
No. 20 (29), "Little Red Corvette" (No. 6, 1983)
No. 23 (28), "Kiss" (No. 1, two weeks, 1986)
No. 25 (39), "Let's Go Crazy" (No. 1, two weeks, 1984)
No. 27 (41), "1999" (No. 12, 1983)
No. 33 (-), "Raspberry Beret" (No. 2, 1985)
No. 39 (-), "I Would Die 4 U" (No. 8, 1985)

Desiigner Holds Off Drake Atop Hot 100, Prince & Beyonce Hit Top 10

HOT R&B/HIP-HOP SONGS
Meanwhile, here are Prince's eight tracks on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs:

Position (Last Week), Title (Original Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs Peak, Year)
No. 3 (5), "Purple Rain" (No. 4, 1984)
No. 5 (8), "When Doves Cry" (No. 1, eight weeks, 1984)
No. 11 (13), "Little Red Corvette" (No. 15, 1983)
No. 13 (12), "Kiss" (No. 1, four weeks, 1986)
No. 14 (15), "Let's Go Crazy" (No. 1, one week, 1984)
No. 15 (17), "1999" (No. 4, 1982)
No. 20 (-), "Raspberry Beret" (No. 3, 1985)
No. 24 (-), "I Would Die 4 U" (No. 11, 1985)

HOT ROCK SONGS
Given his unique versatility, five Prince tracks also grace the Hot Rock Songs chart (which launched in 2009), all in the top 10, with "Purple Rain" crowning Hot Rock Songs with a 2-1 rise. Here are Prince's five titles on Hot Rock Songs:

Position (Last Week), Title
No. 1 (2), "Purple Rain"
No. 2 (3), "When Doves Cry"
No. 4 (4), "Little Red Corvette"
No. 5 (6), "Let's Go Crazy"
No. 9 (13), "Darling Nikki"

("Rain," "Kiss," "Crazy," "Raspberry" and "Nikki" are billed as by Prince and the Revolution; "Would" is billed as by Prince and the Revolution duet with Apollonia.)

Notably, upon their original runs, "Rain," "Doves," "Corvette" and "Crazy" were rock radio hits, reaching Nos. 18, 31, 17 and 19, respectively, on the Mainstream Rock Songs airplay chart.

Prince becomes the first act to monopolize the top two on Hot Rock Songs since July 30, 2011, when Foo Fighters held the top two spots with "Walk" and "Rope," respectively. Meanwhile, Prince's four songs in the top five simultaneously is a first. David Bowie (Jan. 30), Coldplay (Feb. 27) and Prince last week had previously charted as many as three of the top five in the same week.

A whole new generation is discovering him, nice to see. Too bad it took his death to spur it on.

Nice of course, but oh so funny. All these people going for all that old stuff. They don't know what they are missing out on wheen it comes to all the obscure stuff we real fans love.

.

I'm have 28 Prince albums. For now I'm going to become a bootleg junkie. Just need to do something different to hear him alive and kicking. Different songs, concerts seem to change reality positively.

I feel the same way. I'm sarcastic by nature, and the first thing that popped into my head when I saw this thread was......."yeah, death seems to do that for a superstar".....sorry, but that's how I feel, although I am glad that others are hearing his music.

Thing is MOST of his albums are out of print, right now, GOLD, CHAOS, EMANCIPATION, CRYSTAL BALL, RAINBOW, RAVE,NPS,3121,MUSICOLOGY,PLANET EARTH,SYMBOL, and a few others are not being manufactured and some of the early ones like FOR YOU and DIRTY MIND and CONTROVERSY are whatever is left is left. The other albums were either one time deals with labels and NPG records and they are not going to manufacture them.

So if it's a deliberate lack of will it would naturally mean that people were gonna run for obscure stuff in obscure places. Won't leave much over for Warners if they have any rights to reproduce and distribute. Not being around though, most people are going to think the obvious stuff is all there there was. What a pity. The best is always the hardest to find.

To certain things, certain things may have been discussed, he re-signed in 2014 and things were most likely discussed then, possible timelines of how things would come out. The Vinyl as far as I have heard are certain records during a certain period of time 85-92. Which again is not OBSCURE to what people have never heard of.

That because he died. No proof that putting free music on YouTube Spurs sales for anyone. Most of the stuff on YouTube is live concert footage and plenty of people wanted to see Prince in concert.

It's proof that putting free music on YouTube doesn't decrease sales though.

And there's plenty of full studio albums that have been uploaded to YouTube in recent days. It's not all concert performances, and murky tape-hiss-laden bootlegs.

Most people want Hi-Q properly-tagged files, rather than a crappy-sounding YouTube rip from a dodgy app (that might phish your personal info) or from a pop-up-heavy third-party website.

And Warner Bros. Records uploaded Prince studio content on their official channel, to promote AOA. He did have an official presence on YouTube prior to his passing, albeit minimal.

I am conflicted. As much as I love that he's getting exposure, the posthumous regard is just...sad, because it really just skims the surface. He is so much more than his death. Everything that came between, that's what defined him. My beef isn't with new fans persay (we all had to start somewhere), it's nice that they are trying to discover what defined him, but the media...where were they when he was alive? I hate to think that this is the last time the news will explode over him, & I wonder, if he hadn't died under such strange circumstances would they have even give him the time? confused

These chart positions are absolutely insane. I can't believe that Purple Rain is a top 5 single on the Hot 100...it'd be pretty damn amazing if it actually managed to make it to #1.

You know, I was in the big Tower Records in Tokyo a couple days ago (when I say 'big', it's, like, 7 stories high), and there was already a cardboard life-size stand-up 'Prince' in display, commemorating his life/death. When I went up to the "black" music floor, I found the Prince section, and... they had numerous copies of 'Hit & Run' Phase 1 and 2, and basically nothing else from the 90s or 2000s. There were still copies of 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World in a Day, and maybe Parade, and that was basically it. A Japanese woman was there, looking at these CDs and debating what to buy. She might have been looking at others, too, but there wasn't really anything else.

.

So, while it's easy to be critical of the herd for flocking to the 1983 to 1985 era of his most famous hits, part of the reason for that is Prince's own decision to fight Warner Brothers and not have his albums reissued. Yeah, you can download a lot of this stuff now, but it's not being visible and in the public eye (or in CD stores) for 20 years means a lot of it has simply been passed over by the recent generation.

These numbers are staggering... and so bittersweet.

.

But if it took his death for people to discover or rediscover his music than that was too big a price to pay.

.

This man was so undervalued during his lifetime that it makes his death even more unbareable to me. Let's not forget that he was object of so much ridicule for years. The same people that are now professing we lost a musical genius were the ones that used to roll their eyes. The hyprocrisy of this is just too much.

Baby, that was much too fast... 1958-2016

Prince is selling in historic amounts...Albums do matter. He has sold 4.4 million in one week. Bowie and MJ sold less than 800K combined in the four days following their deaths.

Seriously? eek

It's so weird to think that Prince, who people always compared to MJ and said he was his shadow has sold more than him after death.

Agree so much with this! The man only has 7 Grammys in his illustrious career. 7! Some artists now win 5, 6 in one night! Shameful. I remember all the silliness from many in the GP and media when he changed his name and took on WB for the rights to his music. Now artists today are fighting for more control of their music. I always felt he was the redheaded stepchild in the industry.
