Billboard panel on Prince: Questlove, Spike Lee, Alan Light, Kimbra, Toure, others.

Nice of Billboard to do this. Hour and half of fun:

Kimbra's first album was Musicology. lol

Quest is right, Prince invented the remix. He made the white sounding single sound black on the 12 inch. cool. Clever man.

Questlove and Toure are insufferable. I'm still flabbergasted that Questlove would disrespect Prince's family by tweeting "fuck our goodbyes, I guess" after Prince was cremated and a private funeral was held. The entitlement from that dude is off the charts when it comes to Prince.

You can see that the Toure guy is in love. He wanted to be Prince's friend, lover, sister, mother, wife so bad.

A lot of good points made during this. I really liked Carol's and Kimbra's input. Alan seemed to be the most knowledgable, and the one most likely to be an orger. smile

I got teary-eyed when Toure mentioned the angels in Adore crying on the lovers below. I never really thought about that line before, and how beautiful it is.

The magazine cover shot at the end with Prince looking down, and his birth and death years, milked out even more tears. Talking about him in the past tense still hurts a lot.

Listening to it now. At this point I've listened to hundreds of hours of podcasts but this is a standout.

Another thing, this panel desperately needed some queer people on it. I felt pretty eye roll-y once they started talking about Prince and gender.

Also, have none of those scholars ever read Little Richard's autobiography? There's a part where little Richard mentions that he got along in the South cause he was perceived as so effeminate that he wasn't considered a threat to white women. It was one of the most telling / fascinating / fucked up parts of his book... and absolutely relevant to the conversation they were trying to have about Prince's gender performance. I have had random conversations with my musician friends about this, and even people who went off to be scholars. We all read the book.

I hesitate to comment too much on anyone confirmed to be a friend of the guy especially when Prince was so private and we know the family relationships were so strained, it could well be that Prince had 50+ friends who were closer than blood to him

Very interesting points discussed here.
I hope to see more of these panels because these conversations go far beyond the nitty-gritty personal details, into deep socially conscious matters. -Just the way He carried himself whenever & wherever He spoke in the media. OP, thx 4 sharing!!

I had to watch it a second time. They didn't really pull any punches, or not many at least. There was some self promotion in the beginning, and the bringing up of other celebrities doings but the points were very clear and there was a lot of respect there. Quest did feel like family and he's defensive to say the least.
