Wishing we could help with the inevitable Rolling Stone greatest songs issue

Still reeling here, but my mind's had some time now to wander, and I started thinking about how it wouldn't be long before Rolling Stone puts together a commemorative, higher-priced and retail-only issue listing Prince's 100 greatest songs (among other features). This has been done for other living artsts like Dylan, U2 and Springsteen, but also for Bowie, MJ, etc. I can't imagine them missing out on this opportunity.

One frustration I think many hardcore fans have experienced in these past few days is the lack of depth of knowledge on the part of some who claim to be massive Prince fans. For example, I have a friend who called me in tears (while I was in tears) after hearing the news, and then told me she heard "Sometimes It Snows In April" for the first time and it destroyed her. (Still shaking my head over that one...trying not to judge because many of you know so much more than I do and I'm trying to apply that perspective with this person.)

Then Rolling Stone had a poll of the 10 best Prince songs:

http://www.rollingstone.c...s-20160427

While this list is certainly a good one, the choices feel a little obvious. Maybe the obvious and big hits WOULD be in the top 20. Or maybe something brilliant but less known to the casual fan would be in there.

Wouldn't it be cool if Rolling Stone relied on Prince.org members to help identify and justify songs that could appear on this list? We're so knowledgable and passionate...I think we'd do a great job.

Ideas I had:

  • Top 100 songs would include only "officially-released" tracks (of course they do not have to be commercially-released singles and everything released online would count...everything that could be purchased plus 20Ten)
  • Have a separate feature/list of the greatest unreleased tracks that have been circulated widely enough to be known by a wide enough base of the hardcore fans
  • Have a greatest bootleg list for live releases and unreleased song collections
  • Have a "greatest live performance of 'Purple Rain'" (and/or other songs) list
  • Have a little feature on Prince's best covers of other artist's songs
  • Have a list of Prince's greatest guitar song performances and greatest piano song performances

As you can see, Rolling Stone could basically make a book out of things we've already been making lists of around here for years! biggrin

Wish they'd ask us for help...you know this issue is gonna happen...
