Purple Rain Blu Ray -??? Hi,
All I'm a relatively new fan, but I have a question. Do you all know if the live bonus videos on the Purple Rain movie Blu Ray for songs, like I Will Die For You, are from the official VHS of the Purple Rain tour? The quality looks really good on my tv versus on the VHS that I have. Does anyone know if this tour was captured entirely on film or was it done on Beta Cam Tape? And one last questions...were the live versions the official videos during this era that were broadcast on MTV? Any info is really appreciated! I'd really love if they release the Purple Rain tour on Blu Ray or even DVD! thanks! [Edited 5/2/16 8:00am]

The PR tour was released, but never on DVD/blu-ray. . Again, it all comes down to licensing rights, if it will ever see a remaster on blu-ray or 4k disc/file. . https://www.discogs.com/Prince-And-The-Revolution-Live/master/452078

Thanks again! | |

Those clips on the Purple Rain BD are indeed the official videos, but they are different performances than those included in the Live '85 Syracuse VHS/laserdisc.

The "I Would Die 4 U/Baby I'm a Star" official video is not from the Prince and the Revolution Live VHS that was released. That VHS is from Syracuse, near the end of the tour. The IWD4U/BIAS video on the Purple Rain bluray, and is the official video for those songs, is from Landover, MD, November 20, 1984, at the Capital Centre. "Take Me With U" video is from January 1985, at the Summit in Houston. In fact, I recently discovered that whole Houston concert on YouTube, which I've never seen. It's a one-camera shot, but a pro-shot. I suppose that partially answers your next question. Prince filmed everything, so it's sure to be captured more than once or twice. Never released though. . When MTV played music on the regular, I watched "IWD4U/BIAS" more than a few times on there. It was an event. Purple Rain was sooooooo huge, as was the tour, to have 3 different songs from the tour released as official videos was a treat for everyone. "TMWU" wasn't as big of a hit, but the video was still played on music channels. . And yes, the Syrcause concert could use a sound remaster. The bass is highly lacking, and if someone cleaned that up a bit, and enhanced it where it was needed, it'd make for a great DVD release. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.
