Roadshow never topped Purple Rain Tour

As I sit here on Sunday morning diving into my old VHS of PR from Carrierdome Syracuse it just dawned on me. All things considered, the newness and freshness of the whole purple phenomena comes together here with band and audience uniting on a whole nother level.

To me, he never soared as high as this.

You know, I think Prince got better as a performer as he got older. Definitely classier. I winch i little bit now when i watch some of his antics from the early days. I get why he performed the way he did. I find some of his dancing a bit sloppy compared to a few years later. Still brilliant , I just prefer the older classier performer.

I see what you're saying. Not really comparable two totally different things. The energy of the PR tour is just overwhelming.

Yeah he was on top of the world back then. He had the biggest movie, soundtrack and had a lot diehards, casual fans and curious ones attending that tour. I sometimes think midway through he was already finished with it (mindwise) and was ready to move on to the next thing.

IMHO Prince's crowning achievement in terms of live concert was the Lovesexy 88 shows. Nothing before or since by any artist has ever been more exciting, ambitious or interesting.
'I loved him then, I love him now and will love him eternally. He's with our son now.' Mayte 21st April 2016 = the saddest quote I have ever read! RIP Prince and thanks for everything.

True, he played tons of songs during those shows as if it were one jam, no pause for applause smile

AMEN TO THAT.

.

It was definitely the most well sorted out storyline in a concert, it was almost a musical or play, not just a concert. The whole first act with Camille doing evil and working in the flesh. Sex. Even the costumes were more confusing and jumbled. Then finding God at the end, and being reborn in the 2nd act - literally coming up from under the stage amid smoke and lights, flowers popping up around the perimeter of the stage, etc. The costumes were lighter, simpler. And OMG THAT CAR!

.

He really used his music to tell a story, which is why I didn't mind the short snippets of songs. He literally took phrases and sections to tell a story.

.

I saw the tour in Los Angeles. It was magic. I tihnk the only thing that might compare as far as story telling, and a real purpose to the set and songs was probably the SOTT tour. His earlier tours, pre 1984, were basically the same set and arrangements. SOTT & Lovesexy saw him really playing around with arrangements, etc. While all tours have their highlights, Lovesexy is truly a jewel.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

I saw Lovesexy live in Minneapolis on the first night. I don't agree. I thought Lovesexy was over choreographed. There's many instances where the Revolution would be jamming, that are more meaningful to me personally. Lovesexy aftershows are more interesting to me than Lovesexy shows. The first night of the Sign O the Times band when they played first avenue.

Also, I gotta say the Piano and a Microphone tour was quite a high point. The show in Oakland was amazing, and my friend and I who went both thought we agreed that it was our favorite Prince show that we had ever been to.
