There's reason to believe they are. Prince's catalog was remastered AGES ago. Some of the remastered albums were released a while back (Yes, those Dirty Mind, Controverysy, 1999 and PR vinyls were remasters). Kevin Gray remastered For You, which was released on Friday. Amazon now has pre-order listings for all his albums on vinyl up to the Batman soundtrack.

I would love everything from 2000 onwards to be remastered as well as the 80's. Most of Prince's stuff is a compressed mess.

The latest 1999 vinyl issue sounds great.

I need to hear that new For You! The original CD sounds like crap.

...or just track down the original LPs. In many ways they sound far superior to the CDs that are currently out there. In particular, the original pressings of Dirty Mind song great.

I tend to agree. I remember over 10 years ago someone was interviewing Prince, and the idea of remasters came up. Prince said something like "Yeah, I'm wondering why they're not remastered yet either". This was the early aughts when remastering was really catching fire with different artists. I always had the idea that Prince never really cared enough about his catalog to mess with it to that extent. That whole "don't look back to the past" thing he had going on. But with the WB deal, he did say a lot of the remasters were done.

If the reissues are remastered, then even without bonus tracks, I'd buy stuff through Lovesexy, because after that (or soon after?) he was on DAT anyway. I mean, how much more does something like Come or The Gold Experience need in remastering or cleaning up? They're already ear piercing when the high end on your HiFi isn't adjusted a tad down.

Also, I'd read that part of the WB remaster deal was that if Prince ever died, that his WB catalog stuff would revert back to WB, so they could handle that stuff. We'll see. I just hope they do it right, because if anyone knows a fan's need, it has to be WB, especially in this day and age with communication being so direct, and fan outcry being loud and clear.

I bought the recent NPG/Warner Brothers release of For You. There is no information on it whatsoever to indicate it has been remastered or is a remaster. Discogs mentions that the 2016 release has been mastered by a Kevin Gray at Cohearant Audio but his name is nowhere on the vinyl or the cover. This reissue sounds no different (to my ears) from the 1984 Europe vinyl release.

That's Kevin Gray at Coherent Audio. It's on the European version of this reissue so it probably should be on the U.S. one too.

I'd really prefer they weren't Remasters. Part of the reason people think vinyl sounds better than CD (technically, it's actually worse) is because vinyl is usually sourced off the original master tapes and not the shitty remasters they've done to a lot of stuff from the 80s and earlier for CDs and itunes (vinyl often can't handle the newer remasters anyway, luckily). I'd much prefer something that hasn't been digitally stomped on and compressed to shit.

TGE could REALLY use a good remastering AND a good remixing. Talk about brickwalled and piercing! [Edited 5/1/16 10:25am]

It is the mastering, done by Brian Gardner. The mixes were fine. 3121 is even worse!

We'll have to agree to disagree on the mixes, but I think they are bad. The guitars on most songs are too low, the keyboards too loud, sound effects too. That may have been what he was going for but......

This has probably been discussed before, but I wonder how nice those remasters sound. My big gripe with ATWIAD is that the drums sound hollow and thin and I've heard outtakes of those very same album tracks where the drums kick hard and sound deeper like 1999-PR.

Even Purple Rain has the guitar low, strings slightly louder.

I was refering to the compression. I would love all of his catalog to be remixed and remastered by Steven Wilson, but mostly likely we will just get compressed remasters than Prince already approved.

Ahhhh, a fellow Steven Wilson fan! Absolutley he should do it, specifically Sign O The Times since he has an affinity for it. A 5.1 version would be amazing!
I haven't found the vinyl remasters released so far to be compressed, so we may just be good on that front.
