"For You" and "Prince"

Is it safe to say his first two albums were arguably some of his best pieces of work? To me "For You" and "Prince" were flawless. Both albums were a perfect introduction to start his career . I wouldn't say these two albums defined his sound, but we definitely know what he comes from.

It's just crazy how young he was, and how he basically played all the music on those albums. The content was crazy , it was like he was so ahead of his time. How could a guy that young be so funky , so talented.

Who else agrees? What are your fav Prince albums ?

Agree.

For You - bass lines on that album are sublime. A happy album. My love is forever is a real happy, positive song. Makes me smile.

Prince - Some wicked lead guitar and the instrumental part of 'I wanna be your lover' just rules all these years later.

'If you don't want to slip up tomorrow, tell the truth today.'

I love the first two albums. "For You" has the innocence and shows P's vunerable side. Was blown away when he started playing "I'm Yours" in 2009. "Prince" was my real intro to his music. The r&b, funk and rock was a nice blend. More edgy and the I love the ballads. "When We're Dancing" sounds like a unreleased Minnie Riperton song.

I never thought For You was one of his better works, the songwriting wasn't quite there yet and it wasn't nearly as original as the stuff he would come up with. Still, it's astounding to listen to today and realize it was a young kid doing almost everything. So, musicianship/production A+, songs? C.

However, by "Prince" he was turning into a fine songwriter well beyond his years, and establishing things that would encapsulate the rest of his career, androgyny, funky keys, and base, rock guitar etc.., One of my favorite albums of his, not as polished as For You but light years ahead of it artistically.
