Did Dr. Dre ever praise Prince? I know that most West Coast acts paid respect to Prince. Like Ice Cube, Shock G, Tupac (sampling), Snoop Dogg, Dj Quik, Above The Law (sampling) and so on. But I've never heard Dr. Dre say anything about Prince. Does anyone recall him praising Prince in some interview or elsewhere?

Back in -91 Digital Underground had a lyric that went like this:
"Funk is my mother, George is my father"
Now, DU was a huge deal in the states and especially on the West Coast during the Golden years of Hip Hop (1988-1993) I also believe they had a close relationship with NWA/NWA post Ice Cube. And since Prince also is a big admireer of Parliament and George, you would think their paths have been crossed sometime.

I've never heard Dre say anything positive about P. I can remember during the Eazy-E and Dre beef, Eazy-E pointed out that Dre wore makeup in one of his old groups, and Dre responded saying it's not like he was running around looking like Prince (or something similar). I'm not sure if it was disrespect as much as it was Dre trying to save face. Snoop was mad because Prince wouldn't clear a sample for him. He took to YouTube and made a video dissing Prince (basically throwing a hissy fit). Cube has shown Prince love. He referenced him in his lyrics and video ("What can I do?"), and he directed a video for P. Pac was on record showing Prince love. Good music makes me happy.

- Dre said that? I remember that Dre and his Wreckin Cru used to emulate Prince´s Purple Rain clothes on the album covers of their first two releases. Everybody wanted to be a bit like Prince back then....the sexy, seductive lyrics, the way they dressed, the long curls, the color purple.
" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Yeah I remember reading this in a magazine, but it was a long time ago. Like I said, I really think it was more about Dre trying to save face because Eazy-E actually posted a photo of Dre from those days. He also called Dre out on the whole 'Chronic' image by referencing on of the old N.W.A. songs where Dre said he "never smokes weed or Sess". I always thought Eazy-E won that one, but Dre slid by because of Snoop and Death Row. Good music makes me happy.

Ice Cube, What Can I Do? Bought a house next to Prince, so now I can kick it

The biggest producer over the last 25 years I would say. Is by far the richest man in the music industry after the Beats by Dre/Apple deal. So yeah, don't respect his ass after what he said about New York in "A message to Benedict Arnold" but as a producer he is my favourite up until "The Chronic". Boring record, and not to mention the overrated Doggystyle. He must have some opinion on Prince.

I loves me a bit of Dre - Next episode/still dre... they are kick ass! - What was the lyric about Prince turning into a Symbol on the Eminem/Dre record - "Without Me" - Now let's go, just give me the signal I'll be there with a whole list full of new insults - Is that anything other than a reference to Prince's *ahem* name change...? ~Shakalaka!~..... ~Mayday!~

Dr Dre is not fit to pass comment on Prince. Like a rotten, maggot-filled apple commenting on a cool, delicious orange. Wouldn't be right! [Edited 3/16/16 17:37pm]

Never heard anything about P from Dre but Snoop was pissed that P wouldn't allow him to sample a song by The Time but I think he understands why (now) but he did pay homage to P in 1 of his videos. Those guys grew up listening to funk & was there in the foreront in the 80s

Dre is a sampler and Prince is a musician big difference.

But Dre also plays keyboards, synthesizers, drums and of course drum programming. I remember some TV special where Dre was going through his crates of vinyl and the "Dirty Mind" LP was there.

I dont think he sampled IIWYG; Heartz of Men contains the backward masked part of Darling Nikki and another song on same CD samples 777-9311. I think there's another song that samples a guitar solo from Prince but can't remember off top of my head.

Tupac certainly did sample IIWYG. It's the original unreleased version of "Thugz Get Lonely Too". It samples the live version from the SOTT movie rather than the studio version.
Actually there's a few more instances too.
The unreleased Thug Life era song "Is It Cool 2 Fuck?" samples "Get It Up". The unreleased original version of "Pac's Life" has a replayed riff from "Pop Life". And the Digital Underground/Tupac collaboration "Wussup With The Luv" samples "The Ballad of Dorothy Parker". That's in addition to the Heartz Of Men use of Darling Nikki and the 777-9311 sample, which Tupac used for "Whatz Ya Phone #".

It may just be me, but I think " To live and die in L.A." samples "Do me, baby". Good music makes me happy.
