This is an amazing POV of @prince during the Musicology-Las Vegas-and-Super Bowl halftime show period

http://www.billboard.com/...-interview

Paul Gongaware and John Meglen, co-presidents of Concerts West, the global touring division of AEG Live, worked closely with Prince during one of the most commercially successful and artistically fulfilling periods of his career.

Then we would take our costs off, which was 38 cents a record -- pressing, shrink wrap, cardboard sleeve. So Prince was making over $4 a record.

so it only costs 38 cents to press a cd and
wrap it in a cardboard sleeve.

eek

makes you wonder why he didn't do this more often? like why they didn't have the option
to buy physical copies of the npgmc albums. or why he didn't sell more albums at his tour
stops.

also, i hope someone is collecting all these stories and this waterfall of information
that is suddenly released upon us, so that we can peruse it at leasure in the future.

there has been enough new and interesting information to fill a book, just over the

last week. and not gossip or scandal but real insightful studio or live stuff.

yeahthat !!!!!!!!!!

This article alone is golden! I never would have believed that he could have done all those things without a contract. Especially the Superbowl halftime show, I can't imagine the NFL going along with that!? But here we have two credible sources saying that is exactly what happened.

I actually need to read this a couple more times to make sure I didn't miss anything! Not to mention, the articles linked from this article. Wow, yeah, there is a flood of information coming out these days. Perhpas this is the silver lining to the cloud...

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking. Incredible - and lots of uplifting - stories. There will be some amazing biographies, I'm sure - if only because so many people haven't been able to say anything, good or bad, until now because of NDAs or just personal loyalty and respect for his privacy. So there is a silver lining, I think, but it's to a terrible, terrible cloud.

I have done a lot of reading and watching these past few weeks, and interviews like this REALLY make me wish I had seen Prince live during the "Musicology" Tour. The shows I have seen were not only awesome, but even in the press he did for it, you could FEEL Prince's enthusiasm and pride for this. And the $5 extra for the record/CD with each ticket was GENIUS. I even saw an interview now, I can't remember what it was now, wish I could, but he joked about they were also giving away gold buillions with the ticket, LOL, and the host or someone said "you should have given away a joint" and Prince says without missing a beat, "I don't roll like that but hey" and it just seemed like a fun, happy time for his musically. I live in L.A. and having seen some footage from the L.A. shows on the tour, I really truly regret not seeing him live for it. A sad regret but articles like this still allow us to feel a part of it, even now. It is truly amazing to me he did all of this without a contract and a ton of reps.... so unheard of and I think part of the reason he was so happy by the check he got at the end like they mention in the article. Yes the amount was great, but I think it was more that it was money he earned on HIS terms and it had to feel so great to not have to go then divvy that up to people who did nothing. Very cool article and I hope we see more and more. They are interesting and my comfort food of choice right now. Thanks for posting. Oh and if anyone can remember what that interview was that I mentioned about the gold buillions, please let me know, I can't remember since I have seen so many as I go down the Prince rabbit hole, and it is driving me crazy.

Seeing the solitary way Prince did business, it's no wonder he likely didn't have a will. Guess his distrust level of lawyers was that high.

Great article and this was a really good time to be a fan. Saw him 5 times on this tour and the vibe was amazing!
