10 Prince albums U introduce 2 a future Prince newbie Guys,
Just been thinking if I met a new 18+ Prince newbie which 10 of Prince's official album releases would I recommend in order to showcase and highlight Prince's genius over his musical career. These will be my 10 (it's hard but I think this give a novice a good start) 1. For You 2. Purple Rain 3. Parade 4. Sign O' the Times 5. Diamond & Pearls 6. Hits - The B Sides 7. The Gold Experience 8. Musicology 9. 3121 10. HitNRun Phase 2 Hopefully after these the newbie will be hooked and want to investigate Prince's other album gems. Just feel this would a good intro to get them hooked. What 10 albums would you guys recommend off the bat? [Edited 4/25/16 13:54pm]

Throw out The Hits and replace it with 1999.

I just gave out a list of songs the day after it happened:
When You Were Mine [Dirty Mind] My Computer [Emancipation]
I think they will be busy for a while.

I have struggled to find Prince music to impress those friends of mine who exclusively listen to top 40 and think Justin Beiber is amazing... the first thing you need to consider is the aesthetics of the song - if it doesn't sound familiar and modern, their ears simply can't appreciate the melodies and feel of the musical instruments. I've tried, and I've found you need to rule out anything pre-2000 if you know they're slightly reluctant about anything that sounds old.
If Piano and a Microphone Live is officially released, I would choose that. Until then, I'd suggest Hitnrun Phase Two or a couple of select songs from AOA/PE or even HNR Phase One. After they feel like "Hey, this dude is okay" then you can start introducing them to the kind of music that would be unfamilar to their ears... personally, I'd show them the Purple Rain film, since it'll keep them focused and interested, rather than constantly playing with their phones. I for sure would start with Prince. Then idk, too much to think about right now....but that album would be a perfect starter for newbies. [Edited 4/25/16 1:38am] Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

Here goes (in no particular order)
1. 1999 2. Purple Rain 3. Controversy 4. Dirty Mind 5. For You 6. Sign 'O" The Times 7. Musicology 8. The Gold Experience 9. The Rainbow Children 10. The Hits-B Sides [Edited 4/25/16 1:45am]

Most definitely 1999 but for some reason I feel it would overwhelm them if introduced to them too fast. That album is some deep and dangerous funk, need to titrate up to that haha. My favorite, keeps me smiling. Purple Music is my drug and I'm jonesin!!!!!

I just suggest the Hits/B-Sides, it covers all the main bases for singles plus a few important non-hits and then hints at what lies beneath the tip of the iceberg with the amount of top drawer b-sides - If they can absorb and get in to all that they'll want more, if they can't they'll be happy with saying how amazing the Superbowl was and what a legend he was and be on their way awaiting the next time they can tweet #RIPLegend.

after having bought Diamonds & Pearls and the Symbol album (I got into Prince around D& P, I was a young teenager back then) I went for The Hits/The B-sides and it completely sealed the deal for me
so I think this is a great suggestion

Start at Purple Rain and count to ten. And if you really want to include the classics Gold Experience and Emancipation, drop Come and (with a heavy heart) Graffiti Bridge. Job done.

I'd only give Prince newbies the Hits/B-Sides. If they are true music loves, they will do some research into what albums their favorite songs off of these discs came from and would advance their knowledge into Prince's music cataloge. Unfortunately, most people nowadays have the attention spans of squirrels on crack so this could prove to be quite a challenge. Prince Rogers Nelson
