There have been earlier threads on this subject, usually built around someone finding this blogpost by Henry David Hwang, the lyricist for the song. It's worth reading, and will give you at least part of the story. I doubt this was ever something Prince would have addressed in the memoir anyway, but obviously we won't here his side now.
