Musically, I rate it high, because there are definitely some standout tracks. I had to get past the lyrics to come to this opinion, though.

One of his 7 masterpieces: SOTT, 1999, Lovesexy, Parade, TRC, Purple Rain, Dirty Mind

I guess that would rate as "High". mr.green

TRON

It's very good. I'd give it 4 stars. Although I haven't liked it as much as I did when I heard it at the Celebration 2001.

I concur with Brendan, and I rate it high...but I'm of the opposite opinion when it comes to his masterpieces.

I agree...U have to get past the lyrics...the music is what it's about for me.

P.S...have U all noticed that emails from NPGMC no longer start with "High"...they now start with "Hello"

In chronological order: Dirty Mind, 1999, Purple Rain, SOTT, The Truth, and TRC. But, there are definitely songs here and there from various albums that I consider to be masterful, even if I don't think they're contained on top tier albums. Such as "Joy In Repitition" and "The Question of U" from GB, "I Wonder U" from Parade, or "Anna Stesia" from Lovesexy, etc. And yes, I know how much most of the hardcores here are in love with Lovesexy, but as an album it's never been one of his finest hours to me.

I'm surprised with your choice of 'I Wonder U' from Parade. Does Prince actually sing on that composition? Also, I'm surprised that, as an entire album, The Truth makes your very select list of classics..

Low.

Sadly our expectations from him have dropped. It is an average album at best compared to much of his brilliant work. The lyrics are weak and racist. They playing is brilliant, but considering the list of classics he has written, this album is a watered down chaser. He hasn't had a classic album in 15 years.

This album would be probably not even be noticed if it wasn't for being a Prince album. The public has voted. Find me a dozen people who have this in their collection outside of us fanatics. Now go and find me a critic's list that has this as a must have classic. Alright then. Don't let your desire for Prince to put out a classic album cloud your thoughts. That "Feast" song is bad enough to bring the album down from classic right off the bat and there ain't no one out there gonna convince me that it is a great tune.

A classic album is good from start to finish. This just don't cut da mustard babies.

hmmm, i feel the rating options are inadequate. there are things that i LOVE about TRC, and things i absolutely HATE.

so i guess i'll sit this one out, and see what his next album brings. i'm hopeful that the things that i hate will not make their way to the next big album, but considering how fanatical he is about... well, whatever his ideology-of-the-week is, i'm not reassured.

Very nice, Super. smile

"Lovesexy" to me is the album I pick up to prove Prince's production genius. Put those 9 songs in anyone else's hands and you have, well, 9 songs.

That's one of the reasons I love "TRC" so much, as it's a return at least in part to the genius production skills found on "Lovesexy" and "1999". Of course it also helps that it's loaded with exceptional songwriting.

"The Truth" for me is just barely off my list, perhaps at 8 or 9. It so personal and so addictive. I just can't wear it out and its aging like fine wine. The same thing happened to me with "Parade", and with 5 or 10 more years of convincing perhaps I'll see "The Truth" even higher. smile

I respect your opinion. I'm left with two questions; firstly, do you think an album necessarily needs to be in the mainstream public's attention for it to be deemed classic? And secondly, do you hear Wedding Feast as an interlude or an actual song?

I think you would have voted high in one context, probably the music, but low in another, possibly the beliefs? Given your sentiments are so strong with regards the latter, maybe your rating on this album compared to previous Prince albums is average, as in indifferent? You are sitting on the fence, Aaron.

hmm
