Nonsense. Olivia only wanted people there who personally knew George.

Me neither. I simply think they were not overly familiar with his music and didn't know what to expect. I believe they were properly schooled that evening and found out what a great musician he was. I don't think they didn't want him there or didn't think he was good enough. The look on Dhani's face while Prince is playing is just priceless. I KNOW he became a fan that night.

Yeah I think that Vox article is rubbish, as far as I've read Tom is full of respect for Prince and Prince has said it was an honor for him to play with Petty (he loved the song Free Falling). I also heard that is was Harrison's widow who initially only wanted people who knew Harrison on the stage.

I don't buy it either. A lot of these older guys had tremendous respect for Prince. Someone on tv said Prince had the triple crown. Critics loved him. The fans loved him. And other musicians loved him. Eric Clapton even said Prince brought him out of depression.

"I'm so sad about the death of Prince, he was a true genius, and a huge inspiration for me, in a very real way....
In the the eighties, I was out on the road in a massive downward spiral with drink and drugs, I saw Purple Rain in a cinema in Canada, I had no idea who he was, it was like a bolt of lightning!...
In the middle of my depression, and the dreadful state of the music culture at that time it gave me hope, he was like a light in the darkness...
I went back to my hotel, and surrounded by empty beer cans, wrote Holy Mother....
I can't believe he's gone...."

prince made that song come alive indeed

great solo

Yeah, they were all a bit sleepy, dulled, stoned, serious.

Prince lifted it up.

Maybe too much, but it made the song better.

You can see George Harrison's son waking up, in awe, smiling, having fun.

Petty honored Prince last week....and he wasn't late... So, I don't know...Prince loved The Beatles.. If the attempted blocking is ture, it will be reported somewhere..Prince-storys are big now..everyday.

It sounded like Prince didn't want to perform his own songs at the RRHOF but was persuaded to join in and play. If anything, he probably would have just done an afterparty concert and not play to a music industry audience sitting in the good seats he spent years fighting.

I doubt Petty and Lynne expected Prince to join on stage with them when Prince was there as an inductee and figured he'd be doing his own set. It would have made sense for Clapton to perform it but I think having done the Concert for George, and maybe he had prior committments, chose not to.

Any of the times Clapton played it live, it was never as good as it was on The White Album. Prince did a better job than Clapton would have done.

It is understandable that the general public is ignorant of Prince and his skill set, but a professional musician? Sounds like pure nonsense. They knew Prince would kick thier ass.......and he did.

It always annoyed me how they kept interrupting his solo to sing the chorus, now I find out they were even bigger dickheads than I thought.

That is what happens in the original song also... I think people are thinking too much about this performance.

Or maybe they were afraid he was going to steal the show. In which case, they were right of course.

This is the conclusion I learn towards.

Thanks very much for sharing the NYT article. I had not caught wind of it. I always wondered about the backstory to the occasion of the RRHOF George Harrison tribute. So one of Jeff Lynne's guitarists was trying to crowd Prince out of a solo spot during their rehersals to try to deny him a spotlight. Why he did that, who knows, but at least I can see why Prince ripped his solo the way he did--it looked to be OTT--but I now understand why. I'm glad to have learned about the support from the rest of the band which did look supportive from the camera angles I saw. Harrison's son Dhani 's expression was priceless--that to me was the least questionable aspect about the whole thing!

peace heart
