VH1 Classic Prince Tribute Video Block

Looks like it is going to be on for several hours tonight. Watching "U Got the Look"...just chuckled at the beginning of the video where the band is walking all cool to the stage and Prince is in the back, yawning as he is not doubt about to put on a 3 hour energy filled performance.

Coming up next, Sign o the Times from 1987 VMAs. Hell yes.

Watching these videos, I'm oddly reminded of the end of Gladiator where Russel Crowe lay dead in the center of the Coliseum and Connie Nielsen screams ti the crowd "A soldier of Rome has fallen, honor him!"

A soldier of funk has fallen, honor him!

I won't do this for every video I promise but watching "Diamonds and Pearls" video and fondly remembering how glossy and expensive (and well directed) the videos were in 1991.

Oh, hell no, TMBGITW video...Prince had too many hits!

I would Die 4 U/Baby I'm a Star with the 47 member Revolution...I am watching this tonight instead of the news. I'll get back to CNN and E and all the others tomorrow but tonight I just want to remember why this man made such a difference to so many of us. He was so DAMN FUNKY! And then you hear the last part in TMBGITW, the outro where he sings about the stars and I'm just thinking that we just lost freaking Mozart. I gave Prince thousands of dollars, he gave me 32 years of music that is filled with such brilliance that as I am watching this video (IWD4U and BIAS) I am still rediscovering things. What an amazing bandleader he was and that was like the thing he was 4th best at. Amazing!

Partyman...one of the few videos where Prince did more than include a funny wink or look...the whole video is one sight gag after another and so funny. And the awesome Candy Dulfer ("When I need a trombone, my dog is handy, but when I want sax I want Candy"). A MJ/Bubble the Chimp diss, a Weird Al diss, and apparently he killed or at least knocked unconscious all of his party guests at the end.

Oh, hell no, Mountains!!! I love you VH1 Classic!!!

Man, I always loved that rocking "Take Me With U" video. "Batdance" and "Partyman" are directed by Albert Magnoli and Prince fit that Joker-esque role very well. Prince was a bit of a prankster in real life.

Goodnight, sweet Prince.

One question about "The Morning Papers"...was this the only video he wore plaid? He is wearing plaid under his white overcoat. Was this his salute to grunge...that was just breaking as the time this video came out.

I am not making light by the way...it is these details in these videos that are so memorable. And this video does not look as dated as just about any other artist video from that time period.

Oh, hell to the no...America!!!!!!!!!!!! I have not seen these videos in so long. Watching 27 year old Prince, so much energy, so much power rock the living frick out of America....just damn!

New Power Generation...loved this song...should have been a hit after Thieves in the Temple but there was a screwup with the official release or something, something happened to kill the momentum. The movie's performance had an effect on the singles. Good video, the movie looks a lot better in a 3 minute synopsis.

Sexy MF, the clean version. The gun microphone. Master of imagery.

Hour 4 of watching the videos..will stop soon. The time has been cathartic. I have been watching the last two hours with my brother and my 10 year old daughter. My brother was never a really big Prince fan but he grew up with me so he was exposed to my fandom. As each video has come on, we would share memories about each one and my daughter would ask questions and make observations. Then me and my brother started getting silly and we started reenacting scenes from Under the Cherry Moon. We appreciated the artistry and laughed. The one thing all of us needed in this, something that helps when people we are related to or we are friends with die, is we needed a wake. A time of unified rememberance where you are sad but you remember the good times and find joy in the life of the one that has passed. That was about as close to a wake as I can get I guess.

Finally recorded the long version of "Baby I'm A Star"...been waiting a long time to get that one. Hung out with my brother last night and we flicked back and forth from the VH-1 to BET tributes...We recalled where we were when seeing a certain video and the great and funny memories attached to it..and at the same time my friends and I were texting each other about the older "risque" videos..under the circumstances I think these tributes have brought family and friends together.
