When Did Prince Become Respected?

I mean in the way he is now? it's incredible to see the love and support from everyone since Prince's passing! but it's strange.... when i was in high school i was ''weird'' for liking Prince. People always said ''ewwww he's gay''or just comment about how weird he was. Then when i got out of high school everyone was on the purple kool aid! now it seems those who thought he was weird now mourn his death.

When and why do you think Prince finally got the respect he deserved as a musician? It seems for me a lot of peoples minds started changing around 2007. Especially after the huge SB performance.
Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Well first time around it was 1999 (the actual album not year). That to me is where minds started to change and say wait a minute this ain't no ordinary singer.
Then I think a few years after the "slave" thing. They thought he was crazy then realized he was on to something about this slimy industry.

I think calling him weird and eccentric was cool in the 90s but musicology era was a big revival, late 90s too arguably cause of that fabulous HBO show, I still remember watching it and going nuts when he and Lenny did American woman. Many people in sitcoms made references to him or being a fan as well, notably new girl

I always felt it was 2004. When he was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame and had a top selling album and tour, people seemed to wake up and stop dismissing him as an eccentric washed up has been.

Am pretty mad they did not respect him early in his career. All that matters is his fans respected him from the start.

He was a critic darling from the start, followed by gradual annoyance with his ways. I think he started gradually recovering from it with TRC/One Nite Alone (piano, tour and boxset), the tour was very well received and TRC got some praise, plus the boxset was well received). Musicology cemented his reclaimed reputation -- it was fantastic to begin with, it just hit its share of bumps along the way before his transformation into an elder stateman of American music.

I always thought The Grammy's performance with Beyonce in 2004 marked the turning point from the wilderness years into mainstream respect.

.

The Musicology tour in The USA and then Yhe Superbowl and the London O2 residency a few years later cemented his reputation as an incredible live performer.

.

I attended 4 of the O2 gigs and took along a lot of my friends with me since the tickets were so reasonably priced (only £31.21). They all came away understanding what I'd been telling them all the years before. I'm sure this was true for many others too and I think this really helped general perceptions of him.

I think a lot of people have changed their tune since he died, it's sad to say.

So many people I know suddenly seem to big fans. Funny that none of them ever went to see him live or buy his records.....

Fredicka Whitfield from CNN is a big Prince fan. She brought in her some of her cd collection and she had Emancipation, Come, Chaos and Disorder, N.E.W.S and Crystal Ball. No fair weather Prince would have these cds. She said she still had the cassette tapes and vinyl as well.

That's cool. In general though, people seem so fickle.

I wonder how many celebrities who are die hard Prince fans come here. This site is pretty much the only game in town for a fan site.
