'Prince made me do it!' Share some of your favourite memories

Naturally, many of us are playing the music, missing Prince and wondering where it goes from here. But much like a wake, I'm already remembering some of the crazy things that have happened in my life because of Prince. I'd love to hear simple tales. I want to smile. I'll start you off with just few of mine:

In 2003, at a ONA gig, Prince invited fans to join on stage for 'All the Critics Love U in London'. I didn't need asking twice. I proceded to make my way from about the 10th row. As I leaped to the stage some big mama was cutting through the crowd like a woman possessed and pushed me off balance. I fell down, smacked my side on the front row and the security guard said 'no more' and I didn't get on stage. In agony, I tried to make it look cool, , getting to my feet, clapping along while nearly passing out in pain. The people around me were thinking...twat.

At 16 I told my Mum I was going for a sleepover at my friend's house. In fact, I went to London and slept overnight in the rain outside Wembley Arena to get Prince and The Revolution tickets. Dedication.

At 17, I followed the SOTT tour around Europe. In Utrect, Holland, all the hotels were full, so I slept in my sleeping bag in the park. When I woke up I found I had slept on top of major dog poo. I spent the next day smelling of crap. People avoided me in the queue for the next gig.

In 2014, I hid under a merchandise table between Prince's two shows at Koko London, so that I could get into the second one. I lay there, afraid to move, thinking 'I'm 44, a Company Director, hiding under a table at 11pm on a Sunday night. I need to rethink my life'.

I flunked collage at 18 when I skipped an exam because it was the same day Lovesexy was released and I had to hear it.

I look back at all of these, any many others and smile. Prince made me do it.

Anyone else got any funny tales, from record purchases to gigs that will make us smile?

.

Great stories SquirrellMeat. I loved reading about your concert experiences over the years.

Not technically me more like Prince made my boyfriend (now husband) do it but I spoke to Mr Hayes at one of the Indigo after shows. Typical fan girl amazing show stuff before I stumbled off In embarrassment. My boyf comes back and I relate my embarrassing story regretting that I didn't ask him to sign my ticket so he volunteered to go over and ask him. Comes back a minute later laughing his ass off with signed ticket and nice peace symbol and I ask him what's so funny. He said "I asked him to write on it that he wanted to fk you and he just laughed." When we spoke to Mr Hayes a few years later in Dublin he immediately burst out laughing. Guessing the ginger Glaswegian with the outrageous request was quite memorable.

Me and my friend drove from Paris to Montreaux attended julY 15th 3eg show and slept in our car in an underground car park after bumping into Quincy Jones in the palace hotel. Not very crazy, but I turned 40, felt like a student all over again. I think being in Switzerland a place with lots of money, I think the Irish guys sleeping in car park wouldn't have gone down too well with local police if they had noticed. But hey...what was the point in paying €200 for a hotel top sleep from 4am to 8am.

For my 15th Birthday, I asked my Mum and Dad for the 1999 Album. I was a white, middle classed English boy, with very traditional parents.

I got the album, and the same Birthday morning, I had to prepare for an art exam, so I sat in my bedroom with my new album playing on the turntable, whilst rush drawing a bowl of fruit.

My sheltered mother came up to see how I was doing, and I was mid way through drawing and had just flipped the vinyl to side 2 (It was the first time I had heard the album).

Mum said, 'Is everything going ok?' as she popped her head around the door. Right as Prince was saying' I wanna, I wanna, I wanna fuck that taste right out of your mouth'. She looked horrified.

Prince drove a wedge between me and my parents lol

I've slept many a time in a car for a gig. When I went to Dublin for the Gold/Pod gigs, I took my car on the ferry as my 'hotel'. As luck would have it, I parked up outside a hostel and acutally got a real bed for the night. Luxury!

I was an 11 year old kid in the 6th grade, 2009, had just become a fan after I heard Gett Off on the VH1 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s. Well this store in my town had a decent cd selection and I seen they had Diamonds and Pearls so I had to get my hands on it. I faked sick right when I arrived at school one morning. I scrubbed my forehead with my jacket until it was really hot and ended up being sent home with a 103 temp. So when the doctors had to take blood from my finger my grandma said she would get me something. And I got D&P. My plan worked haha.

And then a few months later in November this video game store that used to be in my town had started to carry used CDs and someone traded in The Gold Experinece. Well one day I tried to go buy it and the dude that just stared working was REALLY lazy and was like "I can't find the disc". So the next day my grandma took me back and complained to the dude who ran the place and I finally got my cd. And when I put it in back at home I was stunned. It still is my favorite album by P.

There is a lot more I could tell but atm that's all I can think of. I'm still in such shock I can't even think. I'm sorry guys.
all that glitters ain't gold.

 At least your mom picked a good song. My mom sent me a text saying, "Prince is in the arms of Orion now."

As for my story, I was an overweight kid in junior high. My parents wanted me to lose weight. I made a deal that if I lost a certain number of pounds, my dad would take me to a Prince concert. That is how I got to see the Lovesexy tour. Gained all the weight back within a few months.

I waited all night in the parking lot of a Music Plus To get tickets for the love sexy show And in the morning they handed out numbered wristbands-doh! Another time my ex and I were standing in line for Prince's after show At the House of Blues and apparently he knew it was going to be a long wait so he had hired dancers to dance for all of us in line. Then when he showed up he went down the line saying hi to everybody and thanks for waiting.

I've told that one several times but I got to spend 2 wonderful nites with a girl I was madly in love with in 2000 thanks to Prince.

She wasn't interested in me but we were friends. One day we spent the whole night chatting on my sofa drinking red wine and at like, 4AM, we were talking sex and I told her about this TBA lyrics about licking girls' knees driving them nuts and wondered out loud if this could work and she suddenly looked at me and said "well, try it and let's see" and I was like "4 realz?" and she was like "yeah, 4 realz", and I licked her knees and everything that could be licked after that.

The second nite we made love and the next time I saw her she told me it was always meant as a one shot and it kinda broke my heart but at least I've had those 2 nites and they were wonderful and I owe that to Prince entirely.

One of the many, many things I owe Prince for.

When the Symbol album came out, I copied all the "Vanessa Bartholomew" segues onto a blank cassette, sequenced continuously and logically. A friend and I prank-called everyone we could think of, letting Vanessa do the talking:

"Hello?"

"Hello."

"Who is this?"

"This is Vanessa Bartholomew. Where have you been?"

"Huh?"

"I've been trying to interview you for a long time."

"Who the hell are you?!"

(Hearing Vanessa tell a woman that she was a 'hard man to track down' was hilariously awkward.)

When I got the Gett Off single, I popped it in our old '79 Blazer's cassette player...and turned it way up, not really knowing what I'd hear. Well, Mom started the truck, the truck started moving, Prince screamed, then Mom screamed...she thought she had run over someone! LOL

Over the years, I had occasional dreams involving Prince. The theme was always the same. I always tried to treat him normally, and not be a starstruck fan. I think he would have appreciated that.

Was 17 back in August 1990, was living in the north of france . A friend and i tried to go down to Nice hitchhiking to attend prince's concert. We did 800km arriving in Lyon, where we spent the night sleeping in the hall of the train station... but never made it on time to attend the concert (we did not have a ticket anyway), so had to go back sad . We both bought our copy of graffiti bridge which was out that day and headed back north.

Our parents went mad on us missing for 3 days not leaving any news... but that experience was as sick as a road movie smile))

Graffiti Bridge cover always remind me of that crazy trip we did and the numerous people that took us in their cars heading south and back north wink

I had one of the biggest Prince record collections. In it, I had the rare Around The World in a Day long box gold CD. I never played it, and one day, I decided to give it a try to see if the mastering sounded any better to the regular CD.

I did all my listening back then in my car, which had a serious sound system. I took a drive and spend the journey car dancing to the album. I stopped for some lunch while I was out and when I returned to the car, it had been broken into and the stero had be stolen. The gold CD was in the stereo.

Police never recovered it. I now have a rare long box without the CD!

At 13, I was very enamoured with Prince's purple trenchcoat with the gold pyramids over the front of the right shoulder. So I went to the craft store and stole a bag of 'em, and put a line of them into the shoulder 'epaulettes' (is that what they're called?) of my cheap, wine-coloured K-mart waist-length jacket. I must have looked like such a twat.

Then I'd put the jacket on, hop on my ten-speed, ride down to the creek, and stand by the water and look 'moody'. lol

When I heard he was doing concerts in LA 2011 and some tickets were going for $25, I jumped online and the tickets that came when I search best seats were great and really not too expensive. I searched airfare(I am in Denver, CO), called my husband (I'm at work), and decided we were going to my very first Prince concert the following week. So the time ran out on those tickets, and I redid the search. OMG, better seats and I still could afford them. I bought them immediately, and printed the information.

Oh lawd, I did not look at the date for the tickets I bought. It was opening night the next day! I looked at airfare and that was not an option. I called by husband and told him to take out tomorrow, we are driving to LA ASAP. 'Um, o....k?' He responded. I definitely married the right person. People at my job already knew my Prince obsession very well. I had framed albums in my office and everyone wore raspberry barets to celebrate my birthday. Good thing I was boss and could just announce I would not be in next day.

BEST road trip ever! Drove in, checked into the hotel, got dressed and went to the concert. 4-5(?) encores. GREAT memory. It was even better than my unrealistic high expectation.

Prince made me do it.
Peace. Love. Prince
