I remember seeing James at the Koko gig back in 2007, just after History Boys before he broke big.

He was definitely a fan and you can see how emotional he is here.

Exactly. All of the media's praises and tributes, while appreciated, have a veneer of superficiality to them. When Corden quotes "Sometimes It Snows in April" it is touching and inspiring, and shows that he's very much a true fan.
