I Will: a beautiful song

I've just discovered one of his most beautiful songs, it's quiete ethereal one; actually when i listen to, reminds me of Ray of Ligth album from Madonna. It seems as though he were singin about a spiritual fight. Anyway, what fo you think about this wonderful song.

I would agree! I love this much unrated/undiscovered gem! I would love to hear him play that song on his piano tour!

Gorgeous in an understated kind of way. Delicate and tinged with a somberness that is almost magnetic.... Drawing you in one moment, lifting you in the next. He takes a similar approach with "Girl": composing something that sounds so innocent and light, then downshifting into a heady swirl of emotion before raising you back up into the sunshine and taking you through the motions all over again.

.

I've said it before here about this song but I have always liked how he sang high and had the female (Rosie) sing in the lower register. Taking that approach was unexpected. Even in constructing music he was playing with gender roles (and thereby challenging them). Plus he and Rosie sound so good singing together. They're voices compliment each other.

It seems hard to look at "I will" and not assess it with "Into the light". Not only does the music fuse, but also the lyrics imo. In Into the light, the writer seems to be in contemplation of human purpose (out of the darkness before there was time). It's resulting epiphany (bright light) leads to an acknowledgment that one can't escape the truth. Thus the question "Is a truth more shiny than gold? " Yes, because as sure as the candle burns (energy exists and eventually burns out) every soul must return into the light. Absense of all light, the darkness. It's either an acceptance of the inevitable that we all die and return to the nothingness, or it's the fact that the Warner Brothers contract will one day end. An inner struggle and spiritual search for release from life's unanswerable questions.

.

The second verse of Into the Light reveals that lamenting doesn't reap rewards (if you could sell your worries would anyone buy them?) So it's best to realize that, like a natural flower and baby, live freely now because both will Grow and die. The circle of life. It's not an easy acceptance. Just think of religious purpose where so many want to guarantee an afterlife so as not to have to feel that this is all there is.

.

Then the music melts into "I Will" The acceptance is in sound and lyrics. Acknowledging that life isn't always easy, the writer will still "will walk the road, face the truth, and remember what he came for" because no matter what, one cannot escape the truth. (Into the light). The last lines are interesting because if hypothetically, it were to Warner Brothers, 'you've preyed on many a fool, until no one cared about you, but I will…" What does it mean? Fulfil the contract even though I feel played? Because interestingly, the next track is "Dig you better dead." With another set of interesting lyrics and about the peaks and valleys of life.

Sheer brilliance these two tracks. You'd never hear it on the radio which is mostly for bubblegum pop. Not sure of the simalarity to Ray of Light, but I liked the song, plus Substitute for love and Frozen on that album.

.

What do you think the "I will" on it's own refers to 214?

Completely agree. Rosie gives me chills on both Into The Light and I Will. And it never occurred to me about gender roles etc (I guess it's because I'm so used to hearing Prince sing high that it never struck me on I Will). But I definately think you're onto something, because Rosie is singing very, very low in her register, and you're right, they compliment eachother beautifully.

I truly rate both of these tracks (I see them as one long suite really) as one of the greatest pieces of music he ever put out.

It's gorgeous but specially in I Will; to me it's breathtakin.

Don't know if i understand what are you askin me but, just means that, he will no matter what continue his "battle" on this world wheter it's a spiritual one or a physical one or both. What i'm sayin comparing to Ray of Light is album is both; the song I Will and the album ROL talks about spiritual awareness and spirutal fight, both have an ethereal sort of quality to them.

beautiful song.

I've said before that Into The Light/I Will always felt like parts 2 and 3 of a suite with Holy River (minus the guitar solo), after I heard it.

Yes, you're right. Just wondered if you saw any link with its twin Into the Light.

I never got that from Ray of Light. Guess I missed it as I only liked a few songs.

That's how it goes wink. And now I'm totally grooving out on a Funk mix by DJ Will Page. Life is good.

Anyone else feel that these songs (Into The Light/I Will) feel especially poignant now? Funny how music can take on a whole other level when the artist passes.

Absolutely. After his passing, the first songs I played were The Holy River and Into the Light/I will. So meaningful now.

Absolutely. i have said it a couple of times since it happened, but here i go again i have listened these two songs and this weekend at night i played them (with other 100 Prince songs) so loud; and i cried, couldn't help it, even if could i wouldn't want to.
