'Jam of the year' is an incredible opener. That haunting chours:

'Ooh, everybody's here
This is the jam of the year'

beautiful...

.

.

I prefer disc [2], it contains some of the most lovely songs 'one kiss at a time', 'saviour', 'soul sanctuary', 'dreamn' about u', 'the holy river', 'let's have a baby','the plan' - 'friend, lover, sister, mother/wife' 10/10 [dedicated 2 Holy Mayte]

.

other 10/10: 'somebody somebody', 'right back in my arms', 'in this bed i scream', 'sleep around', 'the love we make', 'joint 2 joint', 'white mansion'.

.

'We gets up' is a powerful jam...was on my mind after M.Ronson & B.Mars hit 'Upfunk town' gone worldwide...had some similarities in my mind...

.

i also dig all covers, especially 'One of Us'..Prince guitar is something that will set apart this cover from any another..

.

overall -- along w/ TGE & the 'love symbol' album, my most played albums from 90's Prince.

I'd give up all of it, if I could just have "The Love We Make".

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Ask yourself your destination
What the source of your inspiration be
And U will find a spirit tryin' 2 get back 2 the mind
How U was in your mama's belly
Live and let live was the order of the day
What U say?
Loving one another is the only way!

I get it - you're being sarcastic, right? You know you're in trouble with this album from that cheesy "wooh!" before he even sings a line.

Ha!

I forgot about Holy River and In This Bed I Scream(dedicated to Wendy and Lisa, if I remember correctly).

Also, Face Down. Can't forget that one. "Next time you play a card it better be an Ace! Face Down!"

As far as what I mean by "too many hits", all the songs I mentioned are "hits" in my mind...really good songs that I love regardless of whether or not radio Pay for playola gets them to number one on Billboard or not!

Emancipation Disc 1 73 B Some good jams here, less filler than the other disks
Emancipation Disc 2 63 C+ Highlights and lowlights here, Holy River is classic, The Plan is fluff
Emancipation Disc 3 61 C+ Lots of badly conceived filler here, but 2 excellent songs, still there are 6 filler tracks here

From my albums list, as you can see, I like Disc 1 the best as the music there is much better overall. Disc 3 is the most inconsistent with Da DA, DA and Face down amongst other rubbish. Disc 2 is very good but let down by the Plan and Mother, Sister, Lover wife along with Joint 2 Joint (That horible sex me woman).

Disc 1 only has Mr Happy as a bad jam, and Jam of the year and We gets up as mediocre Jam.

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Noo! I'm serious smile I usually sing those chours (and dancing) when family get 2gether in one place... just english is not native language here & ppls dont listen Prince....no one gets it... so i finish singing 2 myself smile

.

.

Btw, 'Sleep around' needs much, much, much more love. probably the highlight on disc (3). So good 4 dance...whooo! Live version at Oprah '96 is great.

Exclamation! Marks!

All kidding aside - no, this album was indeed sorely lacking a hit. Nothing would've clicked, even with the right promotion. In 1991, the R&B jams sounded outdated and the rockier stuff couldn't hold up in a post-Nirvana world. Lyrics throughout were vague and a little corny.

There's definitely a lot I enjoy on it, but none of it sounded like hit-radio material.

"Betcha" and "Somebody's Somebody" received heavy radio play on the R&B stations out here..and "Soul Sanctuary" made it in rotation on the "quiet storm" sessions...I also love "Dreamin' About U"....haunting and it's straight out of the Joni book.

A note of trivia about the Emancipation CDs. When I loaded the CDs into my iTunes library the second disk loaded as an prince album. Maybe Prince was playing with having a mix of Prince and prince projects on Emancipation.

Tremendous, soul-drenched masterwork! There should have been many hits from this album.
