Exodus was released (in Europe) on March 27, 1995. And what an album...

More funky than most Prince albums, Exodus had some out-of-place tracks (Cherry Cherry - what was that doing there?) and some segues that were funny once but not repeatedly (NPG Bum Rush The Ship, DJ Seduces Sonny etc.), but also some of the best and most interesting tracks I've ever heard from the Paisley camp (The Exodus Has Begun, Hallucination Rain).

I had been expecting a continuation of Gold Nigga, and I remember while first listening to it being very disillusioned until Return Of The Bump Squad - after that, the album was all good. Cherry Cherry still ruins the flow for me, though.

I heard a while ago that the proposed US release of this would have been without the segues. That could have been a big hit (for me anyway).

How does Exodus fit into the Prince catalogue for you?

1995 was a great era/band

also some great out-takes from this era - 'funky design', 'mad', 'proud mary', etc

It's the absolute best of the three NPG releases (if you count NPS also). Much better than Goldnigga,
the stripped-down NPG of the Gold-era got more funk than ever. Luckily Tony M. etc. had gone, Sonny T.'s voice is much more pleasant. Outstanding tracks are Get Wild, Exodus has begun, Hallucination Rain, The Good Life...and there is the mysterious TORA TORA on double bass, vox "and other shit".
I like this era before the dawning of Emancipation...

I love the album to death - well, almost.

Funny segues - I just love the Smashed Potatoes Girl story

and the entire aura of it - the Tora Tora alter-ego, wild approach (remember the video for Get Wild) of the band, Mayte acting like a whore, etc.

and still some great music!!!

if only Prince had sung...

twas a struggle to get this album. remember WB kept pushing back the release date, then cancelled it altogether. finally got a copy from MPLS. long live the new power generation!

Big Fun could have been a big single in Britain - an edit would have worked. I've played Gett Off (Extended) and Big Fun back-to-back before - similar grooves and tangents - and both have Eric Leeds on flute.

The Exodus Has Begun should have been heard by everyone at the time - lots of cussing but that song is SOOO funky!!!
