Which Prince album do u think is unfarily maligned?

Rainbow Children is brilliant - a Prince masterpiece. I have stood by that since it was released.

I always liked NewPOwerSoul - people will tell you how bad it si but then tell you how good half the tracks are (THe One, Wasted Kisses, Come ON, and Mad Sex).

Emancipation was too much to comprehend and digest properly for general public that has grown shorter on attention span, taste, and appreciation for real music since the early 90s. People immediately want to jump up and dictate how great a single disc of the best tracks would be when a multiple disc album is released - especially when it is Prince who is the only artist left who can actually do this.

New Power Soul and The Vault: Old Friends 4 Sale. Both have aged well imo and get solid play to this day in my house.

"The Vault" definitely. Packed with sophisticated songwriting & musicianship. Great vocals. Nice live, organic sound a 180° from say, the "Emancipation" sound.

The stigma of being a contractually obligated album hurt it. And the bad packaging. Add 5-6 more tracks, and it would be one of his more regarded releases.

The releases most maligned otherwise deserve it.

Rainbow Childrena and Chaos and Disorder. For me two masterpieces and very underated. I think two of his best outputs of his career.

Rave and MPLSOUND...

I like rave...sometimes I don't listen out of shame, but when it hits the speaks...me likes. Mplsound has Valentina on it...masterpiece IMO...awesome percussion and guitar...wow. I think the intro track give the record a bad rep.

N.E.W.S.

Musically one of the best P album, but a lot of fans seem to not value as it deserves only because of the fact that P doesn't sing on it.

TRC - is this underrated? Maybe outside of P fans, because they don't know about it - but the people I know like it, and the whole ONA tour...

The segues do get on peoples tits though...

"N.E.W.S"..This is the only (somewhat) recent recording that I still play since day one. All of the others from "Rave" through "Hit And Run" are collecting dust.

For You and Prince, for some reason many think Dirty Mind was his first album. They seem to forget his first two. 78 to 95 is a perfect run to me.

I can't get down with the notion that these records are fully underated .. It's more that among the worst of his rubbish happen to he some of his best work

Mnplsound for example is bad over all ... But HERE and OLD SCHOOL COMPANY are miles better than anything on the highly overated Lotusflower

Eye love but dont trust on rave should never have appeared on record next to Undisputed

Nps has its lows but THE ONE COME ON WASTED KISSES are better than anything on Emacipation Rainbow 3121 lotus or gold experience

So if u judge by overall appeal the mediocrity reigns

If you judge by the caliber of the few good songs p puts on the record and ignore the bad songs than you get different results

I am happy with phase 1 only because 1000 hugz is his best release in decades ... The rest of the record is rubbish i cant stand .. Still ranks higher than rainbow or gold because the one good song is better than anything on those other overrated records

N.E.W.S & The Rainbow Children

Both are underappreciated imo and underated.

In the case of the Rainbow Children, I think the subject matter went right over people's heads and they had no idea what message Prince was trying to send. A few got it, most did not and still don't understand the message of the project.

TRC, Rave, and NPS, are probaby the three most maligned (some of the latest albums are getting there but too early to be in the race yet).

TRC is the one that stands out to me as the most unfairly maligned. At the time I thought that was Prince at his most musically accomplished, mature and cohesive. It really is a masterpiece but unfortunately some found the message/religious and political undertones/overtones/lyrical content etc alienating. Jeez there was some mud flying around at the time.

The Rainbow Children is the answer for me.

Just somewhere in the middle,
Not too good and not too bad.

Indeed and about the message of TRC; i am an atheist and i just don't care about the message. The music and sound is just ace.

I've never understood the message, because I've never tried to, because I don't care to... I just love the album! cool

I dig it.

It seems the message is what turns some people off.

I love it.

Emancipation.

Yeah, it's got too many R&B-ish tracks on it, but the amount of hate the set gets here is nuts

Honestly? All of them. While constructive and educated criticism is reasonable most of what I read is excessive, exaggerated, unexplained and uneducated statements such as "Album X is crap/a turd", which I believe is irrational and very, very arrogant. And it is shown pretty obviously by the randomness of the tracklists on the "make Emancipation a single record" threads that pop-up every 3 months or so: there are as many tracklists as people, which isn't as if a consensus could be reached as to which tracks are the 12 "good" tracks and which 24 are the "bad" ones.

NPS and Emancipation are among my favorite Prince albums, a lot of people totally missed their respective point if u ask me. So I'm totally with u on that one.

However no, Prince isn't the only artist left who can produce multiple discs albums, but he may indeed be the only mainstream artist left who can do it.

My choice (if only because no one mentioned it yet) would be 20Ten. Because it was so difficult to get, I read all the reviews before I got the CD and when I finally did, I could only think one thing: It's not that bad. It's catchy, it's funky, it's got no stupid segues or preachy lyrics to draw your attention away from the music, it's got the classic Prince sound. Okay, it's a little unoriginal, but we can say the same about every Prince album that came after Lovesexy.
Everything I just wrote also applies to Musicology, another fine album.
And PlectrumElectrum isn't as bad as everybody says either.
I also never understood what people have against the 21 Nights book. I got it for €8 (and you can get it even cheaper) and for that price you have a coffee table book and a live CD! What's wrong with that?

That's true. It's got more great songs on it than any other Prince album from the 90s. Unfortunately, they're spread out over 3 CDs, but there's plenty to enjoy. But don't worry everybody, I'm not going to start a "what if Emancipation were 1 CD" thread wink

For You is actually a pretty good album. It's not avant garde like Dirty Mind was, but it had a good vice, nice romantic songs and is an important part of his discography.
