The Truth is his best album of the 90s.

Maybe ever.

The Truth.

Don't Play Me--wow

Circle Of Amour, even Animal Kingdom, which is silly, but still great.

All you others say Hell Yea!! woot!

A few Good Songs don't make a great album...

If that was the case, albums like Graffiti Bridge, NewPowerSoul would be catergorized as a GREAT album, since those two albums have some great Prince songs... However...

With THE TRUTH, there are some great songs on it, but overall as an album it's not too strong in its entirity... Deff not the best album of the 90's...

TGE, Love Symbol, Come are much more diverse and much more stronger overall as an ALBUM as a whole.

Criminally underrated album that definitely in my top 5 90s albums. To my ears there's not a bad song on it.

"Circle of Amour" is my JAM. I don't care that it's a slow, folky, acoustic song. It. Is. My. JAM. Prince turned that song OUT. I like playing this song for people who don't know his music well, or they only know "Purple Rain" and hits from the '80s. The song is so pretty they never notice he seems to be singing about a high school lesbian reach-around LOL. I guess. Not 100% certain what he's talking about. Seriously, that song is bad ass. His storytelling skills, the captivating melodies on vox and guitar, they all really stand out for me here. Nice flow to the lyrics, too.

.

The whole album is solid. Other highlights for me are: "Fascination", "Don't Play Me", Welcome To The Dawn","One of Your Tears".

.

And it is my privilege to be the first here to show some much-deserved love for the tongue-in-cheek "Man In A Uniform". 'Gon' tell you why.' Always got a kick out of this odd, little tune. It's got mad attitude. The guitar, mixed with congos and trumpet--such an odd combo, but it works. I can't think of any other song in his catalog this sounds like. Fun to sing along with. biggrin

It's a fantastic album. Because I'm a whiny fucker, here are my two complaints:

1) I wish the guitar sounded more organic. For an acoustic guitar, it sure does sound harsh and grating on a lot of songs. His live acoustic performances show that he can get a great tone. Too bad not on The Truth.

2) So many sound effects. Jesus H Balls. SO MANY SOUND EFFECTS. What was he thinking?

Aside from those complaints, great stuff on that album. Wonderful vocals. Beautiful songs. I love it.

Great album and I think it's aged very well. Comeback is probably one his most touching and personal songs.

.

I wouldn't rate it higher than Gold or Love Symbol though.

This. I love Don't Play me, Circle of Amour, One of Your Tears (not much the lyrics) but the melody is gorgeous, Dionne and the most beautiful on it Comeback.

Don't you think that the last line in Comeback instead of: "Tears go here" say "You were here" i think it would fit better.

My favourite 90's album is The Vault and only recently heard The Truth its entirety on Tidal.

-

The Truth 10/10 lyrics and music

Don't play me 10/10 actually 12/10

-

Circle of Amour - just don't like it. Music is nice, some lyrics too but the title and flow of lyrics and music doesn't mix for me. It's like the ballad of Dorothy Parker. Can't get into it. Something with names in the song that denies the imaginative freedom I don't know.

-

Third Eye 15/10 It's unbelievable this track. In every way. The imparted wisdom and the space between the beat.

-

Dionne - Don't like the music, lyrics or vocals. Too predictable for me and noisy after a beginning that promises peace.

-

Man in a uniform - Ditto for Dionne. My own ideas of men in uniform is far nicer lol

-

Animal Kingdom - Can't stand it when Prince whines

-

Other side of the pillow - I should like it but it's too simple for me. Sorry Prince, I want kaleidoscope imagination, sexy or acceptable cheeky. I'm fussy. 'Bubbly bubbly'? lol

-

Fascination - Nice percussion, accoustic and beat but it doesn't mix with higher tone sounds. Don't like the vocals and title doesn't fit the music imo. Some lyrics are ok but the rap no thanks. In HitnRun II finally some decent rap with soul. (Repetitve Artistic Preaching) Like MJ's History and $.

-

One of your tears - used condom.... tch tch .... It gives 'tears' a dirty name.

-

Comeback - Sister to 'Into the light'. What a deep spiritual sad song but really perfect. 10/10

-

Welcome 2 the Dawn - Would have been a better opener than closer I think. I don't like the music too much but the lyrics and the idea are enchantingly beautiful. If I could only find a word that substitutes 'God'.

-

The Vault OFFS still wins hands down. Though The Truth wins in some exquisite standout songs.

A decent album but not the best of the 90s. I prefer The Gold Experience. I know it's a bit more difficult to access now, and I'm not trying to be an old hipster, but it really has more depth. In my opinion wink
