"two broken circles join together and make a butterfly" A question I've had since the first listen of 1,000 Light Years Away - How do two broken circles join together and make a butterfly? Is this some kind of geometric poeticism I'm not getting? Always cry 4 love, never cry 4 pain.

. A little more context please? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

It's a lyric in the second half of Black Muse on hitnrun phase 2, but I think it's two unbroken circles [Edited 3/15/16 9:24am] RIP

Like, idk I thought it was because if you draw two overlapping circles (basically think of a venn diagram) it kinda looks like a butterfly: the oval in the middle is the "body" while the rest of the two circles on either side make the "wings", but maybe I'm drastically underthinking it in the light of the previous comment Heavenly wine and roses seems to whisper to me when you smile...

You put it down on this post, Arjuna, taking deep to a whole new level. The butterfly effect never would have occurred to me in a million years but you made it fit beatifully into the context here, adding a whole new dimension of meaning.

^ Thanks. Nice posts Arjuna! Now I know also why the lyric somewhere 'on your right shoulder' fits it. I wondered what it meant. I will have to go and do some more research on this. I don't wish to be pedantic, but an 'unbroken circle' is surely just, you know, a circle?

It must be broken circles. If you were to take a ring and cut it than bend that portion down you might have two partial curves that could resemble a butterlfy wing. My art book: http://www.lulu.com/spotl...ecomicskid

You can't go trying to make sense of Prince's lyrics! [Edited 3/22/16 5:33am] RIP

Official lyrics printed in the HnRII cd booklet say "2 unbroken circles joined 2gether make a butterfly". . At first, I was having trouble visualizing the circles, but when I read the comments in this thread about the Venn diagram, that's when I understood they were wedding rings, and interlocked rings do loosely resemble a butterfly (if you use a bit of imagination). Linking gold bands together would likely require breaking/cutting them; however, pictures of linked (unbroken) bands are commonly found among collections of wedding clip art to represent the union of 2 becoming 1, on wedding invitations and such. . .
