Books about Prince songs

Are there any books that go into detail behind the stories behind Prince songs?

The only book I know is The Vault which was published by the Uptown Magazine team!! It is now out of print in book form and you can find it sometimes on eBay but the bidding start up price can be quite expensive!!

However it does have an online version at www.princevault.com

There are probably several but I don´t remember the exact names. I lost count over all those mediocre attempts that have been released over the past decade. Some where ok, some not so much, and some were probably good but I really haven´t paid close attention. The last biographies that I found interesting were released in the early 2000s.

.

.

But one title that I do remember is The Lyrics of Prince: A literary look at a creative, musical poet.

It was written by Claude McInnis and is more of a thesis paper than a proper book and it is a bit hard to get but it probably comes closest to what you are looking for.

I was hoping for a book that went into depth about the lyrics and why the songs were written in the first place.

Then you should check out the book I mentioned above (by Claude McInnis) and maybe DMSR by Per Nielsen, and also the old but still good Prince-A biography, also by Per Nielsen.

You might also enjoy the controversial book Possessed- The Rise and Fall of Prince by Alex Hahn. Alex Hahn had access to a lot of unused material by Per Nielsen. Most fans either love or hate his book.

One of my personal favorites is still Dave Hill´s Prince-A Pop Life. Very dated but still an excellent read. And as far as I recall even Prince liked it back in 1988 when it came out.
