I agree. It's one of the better ones on there. My husband and I assembled what we believe would've made an excellent single CD of the album. What do you all think?

1) Jam Of The Year

2) New World

3) Emale

4) Sleep Around

5) Sex In The Sumer

6) Joint 2 Joint

7) My Computer

8) The Human Body

9) In This Bed I Scream

One of the worst tracks on Emancipation and why I'm glad he released all 3 discs.

I love Joint 2 Joint! If Joint 2 Joint were a person I'd lick it joint to joint.

The guitar solo's really good. Shame it's not longer to be honest. And I always thought Ninety-9's rap was completely unnecessary, which it kinda is, but I like it anyway and wished it went on for more than fifteen seconds.

I think it's one of the best tracks - but that might not be such a compliment! :p

.

Either way, I think it's over-rated because it was released on such a desert of an album. At the time it was hailed as a masterpiece (seriously) because it went through several changes and sections but listening now it's just boring, there's not really much going on throughout and is more interesting as a curiosity piece than an actual song. I-M-O.

I agree. It's enjoyable now and again but definitely not a go-to Prince album. It sounds super dated...and it was also when his lyrical contnt started to concern only male/female relationship power games and/or 'partying till the break of dawn' generic stuff.

Some good choices there, but any condensed version of Emancipation has to eliminate the absolutely horrible Jam of the Year. Everything about that track sucks except for the bass and maybe, just maybe the vocals on the verses. The pre-chorus and chorus are just terrible. Corny, corny, corny.
.
I would add a few more songs, like Somebody's Somebody, Dreamin' About U, The Love We Make, Savior (an over the top bombastic song, but I like it), and Emancipation.

You may be right there actually. Gave the tracks a spin today and tha s definitely one of the weaker ones. Human Body is pretty weak too. Pretentious techno.

I agree. Decent tune, but far away from P best/classics.

On a side note, I think "Emancipation" is the worst aged P album.
I listened to it some weeks ago, and it was surprising to realize how it sounded old and weak.
Even some tracks that I liked at the time of release.

Maybe it was me, but there are only 4 tracks that I find really fully enjoyable today and they are "The Love We Make" (masterpiece), "Somebody's Somebody" "Sex In The Summer" and "My Computer" (really good tracks).

All other material sounds more or less uneventful when not boring, after all these years.
Ironic, thinking P claimed "Emancipation" was "the album he was made for".

I get the impression Prince was enjoying himself recording J2J. When he says "Right on", he sounds amused and 'into it'.

It's a masterpiece if you take it for what it is, Prince staging his personas.
It's Prince the comedian, just like in "Big White Mansion".

From the mouth full of cereals, to SM Prince (the cop's helmet with the chains) gurgling "Nothin' comes 4 free", every detail is brilliant, the guitar solo tears it apart, the mantra is obsessive, it may be the closest thing he's done to the "1999" spirit. Come on, give your headphones a treat.

Something in it reminds of the cocky attitude found in the spoken parts of "Automatic", "Let's Pretend" and "Lady Cab Driver". The lyrics are overtly biographic.

One of its qualities is of course preceding "The Holy River".
Salvation after sin, Prince's obsessive theme.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

Joint 2 Joint is the Prince I loved. Humor, a song changing sounds and rhythms while it play... Poetry in rap, tip tap, bass slapping

Emancipation had his rawest, craziest and most experimental tracks since The Black Album on it ("Joint 2 Joint", "Face Down", "In This Bed I Scream"...).

It's one of the reasons why people here dismissing it simply as a "R&B" record irks me so much. There's so much more to it.

I think the "R&B" label got tagged because the R&B stations started playing the singles.."Betcha", "Somebody's Somebody" and "Sex In The Summer"....and BET played the videos in normal rotation. But like most of P's records, it had a decent variety of everything. It was cool to get the angry rock stuff with "Chaos" and grab "Emancipation" a few months later.

Not true. I saw him do this on the Chaka, Larry Graham tour at New York's Irving Plaza. Was great seeing him be more of a player/sideman than always the lead/superstar front man.

I think it's amazing how every single one of these single CD versions of Emancipation is a combination of songs I love and songs I really don't. Starting with track 5, I'm all with you (not sure about the sequencing, but I like the tracks)--but the first four range from okay to "kill it! Kill it with a stick!" (Sleep Around). So, I remain happy that he released the whole thing--and (except for rare occasions) I still listen to entire discs at a time without skipping, so even the bad ones don't make me break it up (I don't think I've ever listened to the whole set straight through at once.).
