New topic PrintableI'd love this to be really good and something that I could use with the younger generation to show them why I still follow this man 30+ years on. Sadly the unconventional bit really worries me. I fear we'll have a picture book with lyrics written in scribble font to coincide with the year that the picture is from. Perhaps the odd memory. Please let me be wrong. This is one time I want the fams to be right.

friend2001 said: Its pretty simple. If the name "Mayte" appears in the book it will be a good and honest endeavour. If not, it will be a big pile of crap. I'm leaning towards the latter, lets be honest. Not at all. Bob Dylan doesn't mention his divorce from Sara at all in his book Chronicles. Like Prince, he focuses on the creative process and what inspired him. And that makes his book so good. It's not like an autobiography needs all those personal stories. How much of his personal life Prince wants to reveal, is totally up to him and that says nothing about the quality of the book. Let's not judge it before it's out there!

. Eh? So all of his memories will be professional ones and that will be sufficiant for a FIRST MEGA Memoir!!!!? I do not think so. He should at least provide us with way more banter -in written form- as he did on the piano gigs. People there thought that Prince was 'open' to them. So why can't he give us an honest and balanced story? Did he even think about this issue before he accepted the deal? Why should we believe he can do this project when he can't even allow a decent Purple Rain remaster (or any other classic) to appear on the market? Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.

Exactly .... I guess time will tell. It wouldn't surprise me if it never comes to fruition, the man has a (kind of) tour to promote right now so I'm more than a bit cynical.

Their entire mental fantasy is based upon the illusion that Prince can do no wrong. The thought of that illusion being shattered scares the hell out of them, because once that's gone...who are they? There's only one person I've ever seen on the org that thinks Prince can do no wrong. I think most people on here accept that Prince is human and like all humans, makes mistakes. I certainly don't think the man is perfect, there are a lot of songs he's done that I'll gladly never listen to again, but likewise, there are songs which will stay with me forever. I'd imagine most people on here feel that way. Everyone has their own taste in music. As for Prince's personal life and business dealings, I'm not particularly interested. Sure, like everyone else here, I have my opinions on what I think Prince SHOULD do, but he's made it this far without our advice. I'm interested in this book because I hope he'll delve into the meaning behind some of his songs. Why he wrote them, what his inspirations are etc. I have my fears that he'll let the "unconventional" part take over and we'll be left with a glorified photo album with a few little anecdotes spread throughout. And if that does prove to be the case, then so what? You don't have to buy it. I'm sure some of us would like something like that, others, myself included, wouldn't, so we simply don't buy it. But the fact is, we don't know what form it's going to take yet so to automatically assume it's going to be shit, if it ever comes out, is just as bad as assuming it's going to be a MASTERPIECE.

"Pop Life" should be better...because it doesn't latch-on to anything from "Purple Rain" as a title....If its "TB1s" (might as well call it "Purple Rain" or "Purple Music" then)..
Still....
Don't do it!!!! | |

So, I foresee the publisher suing him for breach of contract and the book never materializing. Disappointment is what I've come to expect when Prince teases a major new project.

"Fascinating trainwreck" nails it. Nice! I'm looking forward to it. It might never come out. Whatever. But if it does, it could be an interesting glimpse into the creative mind of a guy who's made some of my favorite music ever and has also laid some truly awful turds. I think most people on this thread have realistic expectations. They're not holding their breath for this book, but they will gladly read it when and if it comes out. This will be just another perfume type deal. Prince gets paid a massive upfront advance , doesnt deliver on CONtractual promise and ends up in court.

Am confused for the hate for a book that has not even been published yet. Reading some of the comments, you would think they have the book in hand and read it. You all have a Crystal Ball or reading tea leaves

I would agree if it is also agreed that liking a Project does not instantly make you a 'fam'. Whilst we all like or dislike certain projects etc there is also a slightly inbuilt bias I would assume for people generally liking Prince's work as this is essentially a site where people who like some aspect of Prince's work congregate. Truthfully, the one thing I love about Prince fans is that we agree on almost nothing, everyone is different and I genuinely adore that. It makes for interesting conversations where people present their own stories and interest in Prince's work. [Edited 3/19/16 7:14am]

Well shiver my timbers , a Prince fan site has Prince fams on it , totally shocking And why do i get the feeling that those calling people fams its something to be ashamed off. [Edited 3/19/16 7:17am]

First of all... we know it's not happening because there is too much time for Prince to get cold feet and claim he is distracted and his money is short, etc. He's already punking-out floating this 'poetry' concept, that's nothing more than another form of his 'Tweet/ Delete /I ain't said nothing' mentality. That's worst case scenario though. The book might actually be good, so I'm ready to drop some cash on a pre-order so I can start bitching about Prince taking too long to deliver and how this book better be worth all the aggravation and trouble, and so forth.

WONDERFUL
THE BEAUTIFUL ONES
I don't think I would expect more or less than "an unconventional and poetic journey through his life and creative work – from the family that shaped him and the people, places, and ideas that fired his creative imagination, to the stories behind the music that changed the world,"
Just give me some good never before seen pictures, and I'll be happy
Sounds like it is going to be written in Beat fashion.

I've never gotten around to reading the Dylan book, though it's on my bookshelf. With that one, what put me off was finding out that he'd lifted a lot of material that appeared in it from hundreds of other sources, but presented them as though they were recollections of his life. I know one response is to say, "Well, that's Dylan; that's what he does" - and, tbh, I wouldn't mind reading it now, knowing that I should take it with a grain of salt. I think I'd feel a bit miffed, though, if I'd picked it up thinking it was an autobiography, but then finding out it was, in large part, a work of fiction. Wow...can't wait for this because it's all by him. Whatever format it is, poems etc it will be interesting because it's autobiographical. I will definitely buy this! So glad he's doing this. Baby, you're a star.

People who just want salicious gossip are pathetic and are not going to get that. Why would he write a book about like that, he's not going to. I can't wait for the stories behind love sexy and sott.
